Genuine question.

If you were playing footy for a club and knew one of the players was gay would you have any hesitation showering and changing in the locker rooms etc in front of said person.

Just wondering people's thoughts on this because I've heard this was a very real scenario with someone who used to play footy for a local club.

I (cis het woman) have genuinely never had any hesitation/fear about showering /changing in front of any other woman (trans women included obviously) regardless of which gender/s they are attracted to. At least not since my early 20s. Prior to that my own body image issues /hang ups meant that I showered /rinsed in my bathers and changed in a toilet cubicle to avoid being seen by anyone.

It's a weird one to ponder, given how old guys aren't usually afraid to let it all hang out in there

Who gives a shit. You realise if someone is gay in the club room (and if you've played a lot of footy you almost certainly have played with at least one gay/bi guy), they aren't hitting on you and trying to touch you.

I've seen more stupid stuff and inappropriate comments/touching (ball smacks/arse grabs) as "playing around" from straight guys than anyone who I've known is gay or bi.

Seems the only thing ammo footy players love talking about more than their dick is their teammates dick. Very strange part of a culture considering they’re often also pretty comfortable throwing around slurs in the pregame speech to highlight how weak today’s oppo are.

If you’re showering in a room full of 22 teammates, it’s pretty likely one of them is gay.

It reminds me of certain AFL players advocating for social justice causes that - because they weren't ideal model citizens with no flaws after their highly public acts - give ammunition for those who secretly aren't a fan of their cause at all to pile on because it demeans the ultimate cause.

You have a known Freo troll on the main board posting about 'yeah blokes talk about sex and girls in the locker room, guy should stop being a teenage girl and cop it' and getting 10 posters liking his posts. It's a sign that this attitude is going to take generations to change.

They can, but I hope it doesn't detract from the point of it all. Feels like an easy target for people who are already prone to disagree/hate to latch on to which is a shame. But it's his story, his life. He can do whatever the **** he wants re social media.

I do agree with his sentiment though, if I was a queer fan/player of those other clubs I would be disappointed. There'll come a day when it's not so big a deal as it is, but we are nowhere near that.
