Is it absolutely certain that he's 100% committed to living in Perth? Unless there's some family issue, I reckon he could be talked around to living in Melbourne. It would certainly make more sense for a team like Richmond to pick him up, rather than Fremantle. That's assuming he goes to the PSD.

This will really piss off alot of fremantle supporters on this thread.

Oops, wasn't trying to do that. Just stating my opinion.

Can't see the Lions being interested in 2nd or 3rd round picks, so unless the Dockers have a decent player they are willing to offer.....

I guess we will all know by about 2pm on 17th October. Seems a long way away!

The only way that Freo will offer anything more than a second round pick+player is if WCE end up with a higher pick from their own trading (e.g., swapping an earlier 2nd round pick or, even more unlikely, another first rounder) which they can use to trump us.

You don't actually know that. The only thing people know on this board is that Mitch is interested in Freo, Freo is interested in Mitch. If you honestly think that is how it will happen then you are in for a surprise in trade week. Even if Freo paid their first round pick and compo pick, which is paying a little bit overs, you get a player that if mentally right can destroy teams. There are a lot of teams that would pay a lot to get Clark.

We can only go by what his manager says (definitely WA and definitely NOT NSW) and by the fact that he's been trying to get back for (at least) 2 years now.

With that in mind it's difficult to comprehend why any non-WA club would be willing to risk pissing away $600-$750k/p.a and a spot on the seniors list on someone who wouldn't be anything less than 100% committed.

We made the mistake back in the '90's when we traded in Stewart Anderson from the Roos against his will. His crap attitude to training and injury rehab was poisonous and a terrible influence amongst the playing group.

See my earlier post. Inadvertently you've reinforced my point - i.e., if another team gets him and can't get him mentally right then the only destroying he will be doing is his new team's morale (like Anderson and Fev did).

Simply not worth the risk.

If he has actually moved to w.a all that tells me is that fremantle have given him assurances that they will get the deal done.

If they cant he will be mighty pissed off with both fremantle & Brisbane to a lesser extent, Mitch knows his value would be 1st rounder+player of pick upgrade & if fremantle are not prepared to pay that to get him.

He will play for the team that selects him, Specially if its Gold Coast
He wont be wanting to go to GWS but i believe will even except playing in melbourne.

Deal will get done,Its in both teams interest to get it done

I don't disagree, really. It just seems odd to me, as someone who lives in Perth, that someone would be desperate to get back to Perth. Clark's always struck me as a bit of a lad who wouldn't be too bothered by homesickness. All speculation, though.

As much as it will hurt Freo supporters pick 16 will be part of the deal. Consider it done it s the steak knives that are open to negotiation.

If we were totally committed to Clark then we would have got him last year. We'd tell him - again - that we'll give it best shot but won't pay overs.

He doesn't want to live in Qld - period. And as for playing for the team that selects him, see my earlier post re Anderson and Fev - and that's just two examples that spring to mind, there's heaps others (to varying extents) who've caused headaches (Headland, Jeff White, Motlop etc etc).

Is his missus a sandgroper perhaps?

First round picks are (to quote Lyon) sacrosanct. But even before he arrived it's been an article of faith at Freo for some time now (as it is at just about every other club) that they aren't traded.

Even Carlton refused to relinquish it when they traded for Judd.

And Clark ain't no Voldemort.

Carltank relinquished pick 3, josh kennedy & their 2nd rounder for judd (dual brownlow medalist ,norm smith medalist).Going by that trade , I reckon our compo pick & a fringe player will see Clark playing for freo in 2012.

What a strange way to benchmark potential trades.

Yeah, I reckon that's pretty much on the mark, perhaps slightly in the Lion's favour given the (hopefully minor) question over Clark's mental attitude/rumoured bouts of moodiness. Plus the compo pick can be banked which makes it even more attractive.

It's a useful starting point. We need to use contemporaneous trades involving players insisting on returning home that leave their existing clubs in a poor bargaining position.

The Tarrant deal is, if you like, the end mark - a much older player (say 2-3 years left) but also a KP in great form (prior to being injured he was much talked about as an AA). We ended up getting pick 55 plus an inconsequential upgrade (44 to 43).

Clark falls between Judd and Tarrant. In both instances the first pick was never surrendered. Where precisely (after the compo pick) his value is will turn on who the fringe player is.

EDIT: Warnock is a good benchmark, he's closer to Clark in value than either Judd or Tarrant.

Well to start with, Judd's trade was in a non-compromised draft.

Secondly, it is so much reliant on what commodities each club has to trade as well.

Was it? I'd argue it was compromised by Carlton's deliberate tanking.

Secondly, it is so much reliant on what commodities each club has to trade as well.

That's always a given. The opposite is true as well - what the holes are in each club's list.

Just to make things more interesting...

John Ralph has just reported that the deal is far from done...

A couple of Melbourne clubs are throwing some very big $ his way.

Maybe just to make Freo offer more...but Brisbane will get a good deal out of him leaving, and Freo fans can start crawling back into their boxes after being so uppity about him being theirs at bargain basement prices.

And the bidding war commences...

Winner....

Brisbane Lions.

Sorry, but thats ridiculous. When we traded for Roberto, he was a man-child who couldn't crack the senior side, albeit with a fair bit of potential up his sleeve. To suggest that that trade is a decent benchmark for Mitch Clark, an established high level 23 yo ruck/forward coming into his prime (and a former no 9 pick to boot) borders on delusional.

Why not use judd trade as an example ? If we use warnock trade as an example , you will be getting our second rounder and a fringe player.

Why not use Sherman as an example? Wanted to go to Melbourne (the town) and only really had one bidder. Got a band 3 compo pick for him, and he's got half the potential of Clark and half the achievements (never been in the AA squad). So two band 3s or better, or GTFO. Or Cameron Wood - pick 14 for someone who had done a whole lot less than Clark, and no real bidding war to push up his value. Cherry picking trades to push what you think it should be is about as irrelevant as you can get.

where did you crawl from?

if he chooses to move to melbourne that's great for mitch - but it does dent the whole family factor that is the primary reason for requesting a trade be done. imo if he's being offered big $$ he may as well stay at brisbane ;) but it's not about the $$ is it

Things can change. I hope he goes to a Melbourne club as they have better picks/players to offer us. He could change his mind for big $$$.

That's right - things can change :) It'd have to be a pretty big offer though I would have thought to override a decision to head home - but yet still leave you guys.

Nice, hope it's true. There was talk that the likes of Richmond and St Kilda were keen on him not that long ago. And moving to Melbourne wouldnt exactly be like moving to a shithole, I think he'd enjoy it there
