Toast Mitch Duncan

So not the same as selwood then who slotted into the side from his first season. Not his second like Duncan.

My point remains the same. If you want to discuss semantics, I will bow to the authorities and amend my post. In his first FULL season as part of the team, when he was still yet to turn 20, I thought Duncan had similar characteristics and brought similar traits to the side as what Joel Selwood did in 2007.

Does this suffice?

So not the same as selwood then who slotted into the side from his first season. Not his second like Duncan. In 2011 Christensen and Menzel, both drafted from the same year as Duncan, stood out more than Duncan.

Christensen? His stats were inferior in most areas and he got 6 less Brownlow votes than Duncan.
Menzel's stats were far lower - though understandably because he played a completely different role to the other two. But even he I think won plaudits because he looked good doing what he did - he has always had visible talent. As was mentioned above, Duncan had poise for a player his age, and of newcomers in the last 15 years to our team I thought only Selwood has looked as at-home at the same stage of his career. It's okay, I'm not going to try and say he's a better player, I'm not even going to suggest he's better than Menzel. Though he's undoubtedly a better player than Christensen.

I'm just saying he looked at home from the get go.

No one else will try and of course I'll make a few mistakes, missed many or chucked a few in the wrong groups but at least I've tried. Everyone is different.

Elite+:
Sloane, Beams, Rockliff, Cripps, Pendlebury, Treloar, Watson, Heppell, Fyfe, Bennell, Mundy, Selwood, Duncan, Dangerfield, Ablett, Prestia, Hall, O'Meara, Ward, Griffen, Shiel, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Hodge, Jones, Viney, Ziebell, Harvey, Wines, Boak, Hartlett, Gray, Deledio, Cotchin, Martin, Armitage, Montagna, Steven, Kennedy, Jack, Hannebery, Parker, Priddis, Shuey, Liberatore, Bontempelli

A lower tier - either formerly elite, an extremely reliable great player, or needs to take the next step:
Sidebottom, Wells, Dal Santo, Swan, Cunnington, Murphy, Gibbs, Goddard, Lewis, McVeigh, Zorko, (Crows) Thompson, D. Swallow, A. Swallow, Barlow, Neale, Hanley, Christensen, Z. Merrett, Blicavs, Wallis, Johannisen, Biggs, Macrae, Zahakarias, S. Hill, Caddy, Guthrie, T. Mitchell, Scully, B. Ellis, Tyson, Josh Kelly, Vince, Adams, Stringer, Wingard, Betts, Walters, M. Crouch

He's not elite in my book, not yet.
I've always rated Duncan, can recall creating a similar thread a few years ago where he was starting to raise his game https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/mitch-duncan.1024061/#post-29518943
He's now a key factor to our team but he's still not quite an elite footballer in my opinion. Motlop and he are getting very close though.

Not elite for me either.

Good player, sublime foot skills but he's not quite winning enough ball inside. I think his possession numbers are okay but a little padded by junk time stats in undamaging positions. If we can keep his 24+ possessions per game but find a way to have the ball in his hands more in front of goal or delivering inside 50 then I think he can push into the elite category. I think a lot of it is in the coaches hands and game planning around his skill sit.

So do you want him to win more ball inside or have more shots at goal and deliver inside 50?

I personally would want him to get as many possessions as possible on the outside in space as his disposal by foot is elite.

Dangerfield leads the league for inside 50's
Selwood leads the league for goal assists
Danger averages a goal a game
Selwood has kicked as many as Duncan

Both Selwood and Danger are inside ball winning beasts. I don't think these things are mutually exclusive. Simply put I want both, and never said it would be easy, elite is hard to achieve by definition.

I would have Guthrie playing at a slightly higher level than what Mitch is right now.
He's locking down quality forwards while at the same time being the play maker through the middle of the ground.
Quite a brilliant mixture as there are not too many of these types around.

I think Guthrie is an All Australian half back at the moment and probably our 3rd best player this year. Some might grumble at that because he moves around a bit and isn't a pure defender but I think it's justified, it seems like he's spent the most of his time in the backline.

There are some posters on this board who appear to underrate Mitch Duncan. Personally I think he's one of the most important players we have.

He's fast approaching elite levels, if not there already. My tip is he'll play a blinder on Friday.

Get around him.

I think mainly in part he is amazing outside as he has very good kicking, but I think some (including me) took out the frustration of not having another quality clearance player. He is ok in the packs, but not as good in the open with ball in hand.

Gladly we have that inside grunt and Duncan looks fantastic back on the outside

Anyone else feel like Mitch was used a bit differently against the Crows? Felt like he played a bit closer to the contest than usual. His disposal numbers were slightly down, but he had 5 clearances and a higher percentage of contested possessions than usual. Heard Mots say he wanted to get better as an inside player, I wonder if Mitch is being given the same opportunity?

Also, not sure if it's just our game plan, but he doesn't seem to be getting the same number of rebound 50's he was last year. Is that because teams are getting less inside 50s than they were last year, because we've got a deeper midfield, or because he's rotating less through the backline?

Thoughts?

I see an article in Sunday's Hun (June 19th) by Sam Edmund p.50-51.

"A statistical analysis of the first 12 rounds also found:
MITCH Duncan is the best kick in the competition".

Best Kicks
1 Mitch Duncan (Geel) 129 +12.8%

2.Scott Pendlebury (Coll) 136 +11%
3. Shannon Hurn (WC) 134 +10.9%
* Considers the amount of pressure the player is under and the intent/difficulty of the kick. Duncan's kick rating is 12.8% above the expected rate. Qualification is 100 kicks.

In the Score Assists Duncan is 8th with 19 from 12 games. Wells (NM) topped the class with 22 from 10.
Duncan is rated 2nd only to Aaron Hall (GC) for arguably the most important kick in the game--delivery inside Forward 50m.
*How often a team retains possession from a kick inside its forward 50m.

Im a big fan of MD but I reckon he was off his game after getting dumped by Stringer this week.

Im not blaming Stringer, nor the club, but MD's head did contact the ground pretty hard IMO and while im sure he was fine, or close to it, I just dont think he was 100% after that.

Looking for him to have a better games this week v the Saints.

I thought that too DB, also hit a couple of shockers that were totally not MD like imo.

Fingers Crossed he rebounds.

With Danger, Selly, and Bartel in the form they're in, a fresh Guthrie, and rebound from Mitch. We have a scary good Midfield that can tear teams apart. Now if only Motlop could get it together.

He already has, last week.

This is a great example of a stat we should just have access to as a matter of course. It's such a great insight into a fundamental part of the game yet Champion Data hoards it and just gives us a morsel like this.

AFL could learn a lot from the data available on US sports.

They spend a shitload of money to generate those kind of stats, there is no way they will just be publicly available mate.
Well unless the AFL spend the money required for it to be so, hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaha ahh who am I kidding.
