Re: Mitch Robinson

Where is the interest in my buddy Robbo? Had a great game on Thursday night and seems to be improving all the time, he is a guy that will get the best out of himself.

Re: Mitch Robinson

From all reports he really worked on his endurance through the preseason, and boy has it showed.

There has been a huge improvement in his fitness base between 2010 and 2011. He still has plenty of room to improve on it but the improvement is clear.

I thought he was outstanding on Thursday night, and clearly one of our best.

Noone can ever doubt his endeavour but what has worked against him over the past 2 seasons is an inability to keep up the intensity over 4 quarters. With a vastly improved fitness base this does not seem to be as much of an issue. As I said, there's still improvement to be made in this area but it is clear that it is better than it was last season. His intensity is fantastic but it is of very little use to us if he is spent by quarter time.

His decision making has also improved. It is not brilliant yet but he is no longer simply getting the ball and bombing it long without a second thought to assess his options. In previous years he has been prone to getting the ball and pumping it long without a second thought - but on Thursday night and all through the preseason you can see that he is now thinking. He's still prone to the odd brain fade but they are being weeded out.

Looks as though he could well be one of our most improved this season although it is still very early. If he keeps working hard he will not only cement a spot in our best 22 sooner rather than later (if he has not done so already) but he will also prove to be a vital cog for us through the middle of the ground as an enforcer and a link-man, with an ability to push forward and impact the scoreboard.

Great post and I completely agree. :thumbsu:

Re: Mitch Robinson

Robbo is a very important part of our next decade.

He has an x-factor about him and will keep improving as he finds his way.

Max Rooke was no star at 20yo but he had an x-factor about his presence.

True.
The thing that gives me more than just a little hope, is his determination on and off the field, that suggests he won't be going down the airy-fairy path of putting in only what he has to.
For Robbo, it's 100% flat out.

Re: Mitch Robinson

I have been following Mitch's career over the last two years and thought his game in round 1 was easily his best so far. One of the best on ground. Brilliant clearance work, but more importantly his skills seem to have improved a lot. If he keeps it up, he will be more than a useful player for you guys over the years.

Re: Mitch Robinson

Round 2 vs GC

22 disposals - 15 kicks - 7 handballs - 7 marks - 4 tackles - 1 goal

I'm not going to spend much time reviewing this game as we all know it was a training run but again he showed the areas that he has improved on with another solid game.

He worked hard and stayed composed often lowering the eyes and pin pointing his target and generally making the right decisions. Even though he has averaged 4.5 tackles in the first couple of games I would like to see him pressure the ball and become a tackling machine. That's the thing that will contribute to the team the most.

I like what he's doing and he has a real chance to show his improvement tomorrow night against some quality opponents, make me proud Robbo.

Re: Mitch Robinson

Alright so I've been a little hopeless with the reports so I'll give one that covers both rounds.

Rd 3 vs Collingwood

13 disposals - 8 kicks - 5 handballs - 5 marks - 5 tackles - 1 goal

Rd 4 vs Essendon

18 disposals - 14 kicks - 4 handballs - 8 marks - 6 tackles

His disposal numbers have been down but he still has been influential in both games. Some of the courage he showed in the Collingwood game was fantastic, he really puts his body on the line which is something the whole team could learn something from.

His disposal has continued to improve as well as his decision making which is great for our midfield because his intensity is great. He is providing a contest in the middle and providing some ferocious tackling, I'd like to see him hurt someone though. :p

It would be nice to see him spend some more time forward because he really is a good overhead mark and one of the few players we have that has great penetration in his kicking. It's good to have him in the midfield as well as rotating forward, it adds to his value as a player.

I love watching how the team can change so quickly. It was only very recently that we were crying out for an inside midfielder. We went after Brock McLean which I still think was a good trade, but he was playing a lone hand and we had all our hopes pinned on him. Now we have Robinson and Curnow looking great in the contested situations, Judd is as good as ever, and guys like McLean and Ellard, who were all we had not too long ago, and struggling to get a game. I think that's a great sign for this club and where we are heading.

I think we werent expecting Robbo to have such an impact as a permanent inside mid this year. With a spot still to fill in the midfield IMO, McLean or Ellard will fight it out for the other inside mid role. This will lead to Robbo spending a bit of time rotating through HF. It was a nice development period for Robbo in the last few years and has added another dimension to his game which in turn makes us more versatile.

McLean, if fit, needs to play.

I agree with this. Some people see that he was injured last year and get on the "we never should have traded for him because he will never ever play again" wagon, and they think he can't play at the top level. They are all forgetting that Brock McLean is a hell of an inside midfielder who would give this team a lot. I don't want to see Curnow or Robinson injured, but if that does happen, or they decide to bring in another inside midfielder to rotate Robinson into the forward line, then I would love to see McLean get a chance to string some games together.

Rd 5 vs Adelaide

17 disposals, 9 kicks, 8 handballs, 6 marks, 1 tackle

He was alright, he spent a bit more time up forward and did well there. Not enough tackles though which I think would be his go. He needs to work harder.

Rd 6 vs Sydney

13 disposals, 8 kicks, 5 handballs, 0 marks, 3 tackles

I expected more from him in those conditions but I didn't really see what I wanted to see. His intensity was up but 3 tackles in a game where we had over 100 was very disappointing. The likes of Curnow (10), Ellard (10), Murphy (10), Scotland (10), Carrazzo (9) and Judd (8) all were able to get a substantial amount of tackles and considering the role he is supposed to be playing he didn't have much of an impact.

He's pretty close to being dropped if McLean keeps banging down the door because over the last 3 games he hasn't been as 'up' for the contest as his form in the start of the year was. I'm being harsh but he needs to keep that consistency up which I don't think he can do for the whole year.

Threw his body around in some crucial contests but I completely agree with you. Could find himself as a sub and maybe out of the side if he doesn't lift. Love his work though, just wish he was amongst it more.

Nothing wrong with big expectations if we wanna be a top team. I'm tipping him to lift though, got a good head on his shoulders these days.

Agree guys.

I'm trying to remain impartial but when you want him to succeed so much you can overlook what he is doing wrong. But ATM it's still what has been holding him back in previous years and it's consistency and a 4qtr effort.

He's ahead of schedule in terms of expectations anyway so it wouldn't be the worst thing for him to get a little more motivation by being the sub or even being dropped.

I love what he brings but I want him to bring more of it!

Does it seem that he has had a different role in recent weeks, to anyone else?
I'm still happy for his prescence, but it just looks as though he has been played behind the play as opposed to being in the midst of it.

I may be wrong but his possessions have come from all over the ground, and many in the back-line.

Alright, so I've been a bit slack on the reports...had a lot on my plate lately so I'll give a limited review on the games over the last few weeks and an extensive one on his outstanding game against Port Adelaide.

Rd 9 v Geelong

11 disposals, 5 kicks, 6 handballs, 0 marks, 3 tackles

Played as the sub but he did some good things and added that hardness we have come to admire to the group.

Should never have started as the sub in the first place as we lacked that edge of hardness. He did miss some targets though and that will be something he has to fix over the next few years if he is to take his game to the next level.

Rd 10 v Melbourne

30 disposals, 20 kicks, 10 handballs, 9 marks, 6 tackles

This was one of his best games and reaffirms that he loves the wet and slippery conditions where he can jump into the ball and put his body on the line more effectively.

He used the ball well but as usual was prone to the odd error and lack of composure but his improvement has seen him commit less of these acts.

Missed an easy goal and hasn't been great from a set shot this year. Needs to improve this to make him a more dangerous option when he rotates forward.

Rd 11 v Port Adelaide

34 disposals, 23 kicks, 11 handballs, 9 marks, 5 tackles

GOALS - 1.3

He had a career night in a lot of ways picking up the most disposals, kicks, clearances, marks, contested and uncontested possessions of his career. He threw his body about with reckless abandonment and at one stage looked like he had knocked himself out when he flew for a contested and landed smacking his head on the ground. But in true Robbo style, he picked himself up and a few moments later flew and took a mark almost landing the same way.

His ball use was fantastic and set up a few team mates on leads with some beautifully weighted passes on both feet. His left foot pass to Ellard who was sandwiched between two opposition players was very good.

He flew for marks, contested hard at ground level and garnered praise from commentators for his commitment to the contest and how consistently he puts his body on the line. This is the sort of stuff that separates him from other midfielders and once he has a few more preseasons to refine his skills, develop more size and fitness he will be a lot better than many expected from him.

Again he missed some easy shots at goal and with 1.3 to his name he could have made sure of the 3 Brownlow votes if he could have turned that into 3.1. He had some tough shots but I would have liked to have seen another 1 or 2 goals under his name, especially with the set shot that he missed.

With 7 clearances and 8 1%'s which was a team high, he lead the way with Murphy in our midfield and worked as hard as I have seen him work in his whole career.

Outsanding stuff from Robbo.
