Mitch Starc

So who do you drop out of siddle, cummins, pattinson and Hilfy if they are all fit?

Starc is the 5th bowler.

He's had some luck as we've copped a few injuries over the past few months, but if all fit he's not in the picture.

im not advocating dropping etc. i do think siddle/pattoman/hilf get first crack. think id have starc as the 4th.

but what im posing is the argument that starc adds variety which may help him in his pursuit.

Starc is not in our best 11 on most wickets. If the pitch is a seamers paradise he should get a go but when we go with our best team, he is not in it. Whilst his t20 and OD form is outstanding , that should have little influence on the test side. He is talented and should get two or three tests this summer through rotation/injuries/conditions but let's not get carried away. His variety his handy, but that shouldn't get him a game unless he is on par with the other quick, which in the longest format, he is not just yet.

On Cummins, he should be fifth out the quicks and a fair way below Starc for now. He's missed too much to come straight into consideration so unfortunately for him, he has to go back to the shield and take wickets IMO.

In the shorter forms he's been bowling tripe. Will be great when he's back home playing in the Shield.

Cummins hasn't played a first class match since his test debut a year ago, if they are planning on using him in tests early(or at all) this summer then they have handled him terribly(again).

thats handled him terribly if they were actually following the argus report like they said they were going to, it's clear that that was lip service, our young quicks apparently have limited days to bowl a year and they sure as hell don't want to waste those days on them learning to bowl in first class cricket.

I doubt that they will play Starc in the first two tests, he is coming off playing t20 without any 1st class cricket behind him. Bowling in 2 over spells will not get you ready for having to bowl 20 in a day during a test.

Will he play test cricket this summer? Yes, but not the first two against South Africa.

I wouldn't be surprised if you're right about him not playing the first two, but Hilf is in the exact same situation and will get picked.

Harris, as a fine a bowler as he is, is a liability.
While fantastic when fit, he's no guarantee to finish a test match.
playing 10 is a burden.
Sorry Rhino, until you can string together some fitness, you are too much of a risk :(

Yes, have to agree with that. My only hope is that the chances of using him in test cricket were actually quite slim regardless. Giving a young player no experience in first class cricket and expecting him to front up in test matches is beyond my understanding.

Really.... really? Wait.. really?

Sure if he was playing in the coloured uniform. But he's not even in NSWs top 3 bowlers in Shield cricket.

Sorry, should've prefaced that with an 'If' - as in, if we're going to pick him, pick him because he's shown himself to be one of the best 3 quicks in the country; not because he's a lefty.

EDIT - As above, cheers Barney :)

Really like this guy, not only as a player...

It is one thing to stand up for a team-mate. Quite another to do so when the antagonist happens to be Shane Warne.

Though he remains some way short of ripening as a Test match bowler, there is a lot to like about Mitchell Starc. On the field he is capable of delivering the unplayable ball, as Alviro Petersen and Jacques Kallis discovered to their discomfort in Perth. Off it, he is also capable of delivering impassioned defences of his team-mates, a quality that will not go unnoticed by the pair of fellow bowlers subject to much scrutiny over the past week. If Starc is not yet capable of bowling as a team man all the time, he has certainly spoken as one.

When Warne drummed up effortless publicity for the Twenty20 Big Bash League by trotting out the line that at 43 he was more than good enough to walk straight back into Australia's Test team, media and public enthusiasm for the ageing legspinner's loose talk was such to make incumbent Nathan Lyon feel a little unwanted. While Lyon and Michael Clarke have formed a strong and very healthy relationship, Australia's captain could not help but fuel the fire by admitting that he had wished and asked for a Warne comeback many times.
