am concerned that starcs position on playing has changed. first he was devastated not to play box day, now he understands and supports the rotation policy that CA dont want called a rotation policy.

the PA men of CA have gotten to him

It's called "Towing the party line"
Such a shame the CA Yes men have got to him.

starc's yorker is a thing of beauty. such a great weapon to have. when was the last time we had someone who could bowl one consistently?

I am not suggesting Starc is a bowling all rounder (yet), however at what point does a bowlers ability with the bat become a factor at the selection table.

In England i dont think we can afford too many bowlers who cant bat. This has been a sold performance with the bat for Starc.

Does it give him and edge coming into the Ashes? Over someone like Bird?

I'd still take Bird, I think he'll be a real handful. Starc over Siddle on the other hand is an option or just go 4 pacemen. If there is a place Starc should go well it is England, but still the question mark over his bowling with the red ball.

Mitch Starc live averages:

Batting: 36.12
Bowling: 32.00

Andrew Flintoff Career averages:

Batting: 31.77
Bowling: 32.78

Honestly I think Bird should be picked ahead of Starc in the ashes (health and form permitting). We will need to consistently bowl well against the Poms and unfortunately at this point in time I don't think Starc is quite there, yet. Plus, if we pick a batting lineup that is good enough runs down the order won't be as important.

did his homework

His next assignment should be "How to convert a hundred and not shit yourself on 99"

He has some serious potential as a genuine all rounder though.

Commentators kept crapping on about how he missed out on selection for the 2nd test when he can clearly bat.

Ignoring the fact he made 3 and 8 with the bat in the first test, he took 0/75 with the ball and bowled very poorly to the conditions, and given he was selected as a bowler then it's fair enough he made way when we opted for pace over spin.

Great innings today, but disappointing to see him get out on 99. Lyon should've been right in his ear after the first play and miss wide outside off and Sharma bowled beautifully to keep hanging it out there.

You mean that batsman of vast experience and 20 or so tons at test level, Nathan Lyon? Is that who should have been advising Starc on how to get to a ton?

It's a real shame that the OTHER Nathan Lyon was out there with him, wasn't it?

Doesn't matter if you've made a century or not, you could tell exactly what was going to happen with Starc. Even McGrath would have told him to just calm down theres plenty of time left.

I remember Mike Hussey saying in an interview 'just take it easy and get off strike, that's all, leave it to me'. Or something along those lines when describing what he told Ryan Harris who came out to bat in a tense moment in a one dayer. And Ryan Harris had nodded and then he promptly when for wild yahoos first 2 balls and by some luck connected with one of them enough to just get it over a fielder's head. Hussey hadn't needed to say that in the interview as you could see exactly what had gone on onfield, it was bloody funny.

You can't expect tail-enders to keep their heads under pressure.

It shouldn't IMO unless the edge between them is very minimal. Any compromise on your bowling has to be thought through very carefully. You want to be picking your 4 best bowlers because if you can't take 20 wickets you're playing to draw.

With a batsmen it's slightly different. I'd compromise and bring someone in who may be your 9th and 10th best batsmen in place of your 6th best batsmen if they could provide a solid 5th bowling option. But it's not just that simple. You might have virtually nothing separating your 4th best batsmen from your 14th best batsmen (maybe an expected average of 3 runs per dismissal), in which case if any of those 10 blokes were a viable 5th bowling option, they very much come into calculations. On a more unlikely scale you might have a massive gap between your 6th best batsmen and your 7th best batsmen (say, expected 10 runs per dismissal) in which case even if your 7th best batsmen was a viable 5th bowling option, you're probably weakening your batting too much.

Kinda speaking in absolute's there for arguments sake. Picking a team isn't that simple.

Starc might see pretty limited minutes in England imo.

Harris has played the last 4 or so Sheffield Shield games, the final today, he's pretty much ready for test cricket.

Bird's not suited to India imo, but he is perfectly suited to England.

Pattinson, Harris, Siddle, Lyon would be my attack in England, with Bird rotating in.
