Has anyone actually heard that we are talking to the kid? Richmond are obviously in the box seat but I hope the club makes a play for him.

oh yeah, more of this eagle nonsence about palmer being a loose unit, arrogant, druggie etc etc etc..... give it a rest, until i see evidence to the contrary rhys is a champ who can do no wrong and in fact could be the closest thing to jesus that our club has had since one M. Pavlich was drafted

LOL. To avoid having your opinion of Palmer knocked down about 30 pegs, and since Perth is such a small place - as far as nightlife goes anyway - you should avoid going out. Ever.

Most footy players are tools, it's just the nature of the industry they work in. Much the same way that guys who work in construction swear a lot, guys who play in the AFL douche it up a lot.

Hands up if you have ever been out on the drink and made a tool of yourself.

<<<<my hoof is up>>>>>

When I was 21 I got a big head because I was a good player in a country league making beer money - hate to have seen me if I was actually playing a few grades higher and making a lot of cash.

Take any group of young guys ....20% are going to be knobs, 20% are going to be great guys and 60% are going to fluctuate (these are official stats). At the end of the day maybe player X is a knob or maybe he was rude because he was sick of fans talking to him or maybe you're the knob and you just dont know it (I have a 6th sense for spotting these people).

You know what win a flag and I don't care as long as your standards dont drop to the West Coast level - you can knob it up 365 days a year.

On Thorpe - doubt we will be in the race, the good thing about him is it may go Ball, Thorpe - leaving us to grab a McDonald if list management will allow it.

Isn't Haselby a bit of a tool?

Actually from what ive heard, hes a pretty layed back bloke. Sandi also.

My boss is on the doors at the Lefty, so hes got a reasonable idea of who the ********s are.

I dont really think country boys are the "tool" type. Theyd get that straigtened out pretty early if they where :D

I hear Chris Masten is a tool... And Darren Glass.

No wait, I once sat at a table with Dean Cox. Seemed to be quite a tool...

Aaahhh... that feels better.

I reckon now that Dodd is out for half the season , at this stage , then drafting McDonald becomes more of a priority.

You'd be pretty disappointed if Dodd's absence for 10 games influenced a drafting decision one little bit. You draft for the next 10 years, not to fill a small hole for 10 rounds

i agree, changing your drafting strategy to cover stephen dodd seems ludicrous . having said that. macdonald would be a great get for us in his own right. :thumbsu:

I maybe didn't convey my thoughts best.
Drafting McDonald , & hopefully through the PSD , was where I am at.
The fact that Dodd is now out makes him even now seem like a need more than a want.
Remember he played all regular season games for Brisbane this year & was in the top few for possesions as well.
Would be a very handy asset & at only 25 is a pretty much guaranteed first 22 player who then goes onto another 5 years of playing which is more than can be said for the "if" factor of a late draft pick.

On the main draft board it says he's been invited and accepted to go train with Melbourne this week. Only way we'd get him now you'd think is if we can entice him into the ND and take him with pick 36 which is highly unlikely

who thorp or macdonald?

Melbourne are pretty keen on Ball too but obviously they can't get both of them unless one of them goes into the ND. But once they're in there anything could happen so Melbourne must be prepared to use a pretty high draft pick.

Either that or they've cooled on Ball which would be good for us because it would guarantee either Ball or McDonald will be there for our PSD pick.

i think the general feeling is that ball will re-sign with the saints

The more I think about it, the less I understand why we would really need Joel Macdonald....

He is 187cm (the same height as Paul Duffield). And he doesn't really fill any huge holes in our team, because we have quite a few guys capable of playing the rebounding defender position - Hayden, Broughton, Duffield, Suban.

"A couple of times at Brisbane, with their injuries in defence, he was playing on their big giant forwards," Pask said. "He's suited to that third tall or half-back flank.

"[He'd like] an opportunity to use his run, his kicking, his carrying the football. It's just about moving to a club that fulfils his best role.

It would seem as though Macdonald has little interest in playing as a tall defender, and that is what we need. Drafting him would give us a replacement for Dodd, but even with all the crap he gets, Dodd is still a solid player and finished top 10 in our B&F. So I would hardly think he needs replacing...

I just think Pick 52/PSD would be better off being used on a young KPP, because there are a few who will be around that mark (Luff, Grimes, Astbury, Hartigan) and they are all possibilities to actually hold down a key defensive position.

But we seemed to have committed to using this PSD pick, and I think that could be the reason behind the invitations to Riggio and Stanley...

while i agree with you, in that if there is a young KPP available that the club thinks could make it then we should take him, but the reality is thatg all KPP of value should be taken in the draft, i disagree with you about dodd, he is horrible and if we can get a player of macdonalds quality for free to replace dodd, then we should pull the trigger and get him over here

Im not as optimistic about getting Macdonald as every one else is. Its not a given that he is going to want to move all the way to Perth. No matter what people say, he still has his optionts. Nominating for the national draft, refusing to live in Perth ala Carr etc

Like Chris sez, its most likely we are going to pick up one of Riggio or Stanley.

Id be happy with Stanley. Webber mentioned during the week that we are focusing on improving are clearences this year. This is Stanley's strong point, getting the hard ball.
Hasn't been given much of a chance at Collingwood and would like to see him given an opportunity ith us

......

Hayden is getting on in age and might not have much more time as a defender. As for Suban, we would be silly not to want to turn him into a permanent midfielder. Regardless, Suban and Hayden are smaller type players anyway and not really comparable to MacDonald.

That leaves Broughton and Duffield, and Duffield might even move into the midfield for longer stints. As for Dodd, I couldn't give a sh*&% if he finished top 10 in the B&F, that is a joke beyond belief, he is a far inferior player to MacDonald.

Whatever, I definitely think there is room in our backline for MacDonald as their are 4 non-KPP spots to fill (or 5 with an extra man down back), and he would not be surplus to needs. Lets just say Duff and Hayden stay back next year, our backline could look like this:

HAYDEN TARRANT BROUGHTON
DUFFIELD MCPHARLIN? MACDONALD

While these guys like Luff, Grimes, Riggio, Stanley might turn out OK, the chances are very heavily stacked that the one we pick won't make it. Whereas with MacDonald you know that he will provide solid service. Not saying he is the ideal player to use our PSD pick on, but there are plenty of reasons why we would pick him up.

The best solution would have been to delist an extra player (e.g. Foster, Dodd) so we could pick up a key defender like Luff AND MacDonald. Not sure if there is still time to do this.

thanks. looks like macdonald it is then... who i'd be more than happy with

We need to trump the Dees, they are getting everything their own way. If they end up with Ball and Thorp and we pick up a chop like Riggio I am going to be sick. Fact of the matter remains that we always seem to get the best of the rest. Time to be aggressive, fly this guy over. Throw opportunity and some money his way. It is the only way to get the right size forward.

We do NOT need another mid sized backman. Fact is that we found two of the best last year in Duffman and Broughton. We need bigger boddies with skill and determination both forward AND back. Here is the article on Thorp.
