Mitch Thorp

It would be interesting to find out if he was involved in a "Fevesque" type indescretion before we entertain recruiting this guy.

To be delisted with a year to run on what is probably a decent salary , means he has done something reasonably serious in the HFC's eyes .It is likely something fairly recently as well.

Does anyone know what it was that caused the Hawks to give him the boot?

He will go to November Draft and get picked up by someone before the PSD methinks...

I'd take a punt on him, give Moloney five minutes alone to get all that arrogance out of him.

Speaking of which, Thorp turns 21 December 25th. With that in mind, can we rookie-list him? Can Melbourne enter some kind of agreement with him where he doesn't nominate for the ND or the PSD?

What size & weight is this kid? How are our medical guru's going to get this kid right to play?, their track record is not good.

We would be better chasing a player that has a good medical record rather than taking such a high risk with Thorp.

We are at the stage where we can take a risk on a talented youngster and Thorp is the perfect youngster to take a risk on.

He's 194cm & 86kg according to what I can find, which is maybe a bit light but not to bad seeing as he's not yet 21.

Would very much like Thorp despite injuries concerns. I think HFC have decided that they don't need both Thorp & Dowler and with Dowler stepping up this year, Thorp has been shown the door. Would like to target him at pick 34

The Hawks wouldnt have delisted a former top 10 pick with a year to go on his contract, just to get another pick in the 80s... unless something was up. Maybe injury, maybe w***er issues. I dunno.

Just my 2 bobs worth.

Unfortunately we don't have any spare draft picks, unless we pay out some of the contracted deadwood, (Bell, Newton, Miller, Meesen/PJ). I doubt that we'll use any of our first 5 picks or PSD1 to pick up Thorp.

Assuming his body is ok, Thorp is definitely worth a 1 year contract.

He is definitely worth PSD#1 if Ball isn't there and I would use #34 on him in an instant but I don't think he'll last that long in the National Draft.

You think he would last past the 30's though - Hawthorn put him up for trade and no deal got done but you would think they would have accepted anything in the 30's as that would be their highest pick.

Maybe think about him with pick 50 depending on who else is left - but we would want to be pretty sure on his attitude. We've recruited some good attitudes so we dont need a flog entering the young group at this stage.

His attitude is similar to Jack Riewoldt . Jack is very confident and always has been, though the key difference is that Chris (Jack's old man) is very down to earth as are most of the Riewoldts, Chris being a former Clarence champion (300 games ??) who knows the difference between confidence and plain arragence. Jack also has cousin Nick to keep him in check. So i just recon this delisting may be the tonic for Mitch requires to straighten up and furfill his potential, if in fact it was attitude that got him the chop. However his inuries are bad the issue becomes murkier, if the Ball situation falls through i would hope we target Thorpe.

Im pretty sure bailey is a character first sort of coach. Cant see him taking a basket case like thorp and mixing that with our promising group of young players.

He has arrogance and smugness written all over him, especially for a guy who has done... well SWEET FA so far in his career.

Liam Pickering has just confirmed on SEN, that Mitch will start training with the Demons on Monday... Great chance for us to have a look at him, and see if he'll fit in...

Yeah great news that he's going to train with us, hope we pick him up:thumbsu:

The longer this Luke Ball thing plays out, the more I'm leaning towards us making a solid play for this guy. Mitch training with us shows that he is willing to come to the club, and the potential reward is massive. He has 2 years on Jack, and 3 years on whoever we would draft, which could end up being the difference between us in a couple of seasons knocking on the door of the 8, and actually playing finals football. Scully & Trengrove fill our midfield needs, we pick up Thorp we could pick up another mid at 11 to cover Mclean and our mids would be close to being set.

Basically I see the Ball situation forcing our hand into 2 directions.

Ball chooses Dees:

Pick 11 best available KP Forward available
PSD Ball

Ball Chooses Saints:

Pick 11 next best player (mid or otherwise)
PSD Thorp

There is also the possibility of taking Thorp and someone lke Aaron Black as has been suggested as insurance, but the above options are how I see it playing out. Personally, I'd now prefer the Thorp and mid at 11 option, based on the fact that Ball doesn't know what the hell he wants.

Very impressive when he was 18 for the Devils (Tas VFL team r.i.p..Spaulds lol), very versatile played CHF,CHB and Ruck.

General opinion was he had tickets on himself though, might be why he was dropped with a year to run. Wouldn't mind getting him if we had pick 50, otherwise maybe rookie, though he may be gone by then.

Needs a proper environment to set him straight.

I couldn't let this comment slide, what exactly defines a "proper environment"?
What do you think Melbourne could teach him that he couldn't learn at Hawthorn?

If you do take Thorp, I wish you all the best with his development. :thumbsu:

That is a fair question. The only thing to bare in mind is that having been "let go" from 1 club he may re-assess things like his attitude (which is not uncommon for players on a 2nd chance) and gel with MFC but it is all admittedly guess work at this stage.
