Mitch Thorp

A look at my posting history on Thorp will show I never subscribed to the internet bandwagon. In my view he was simply a poor draft choice. It happens to every club and we've done better than most of late. He showed less than any other player on the list over the last 3 years. Struggled to get a kick in the VFL.

Your interest in him is probably similar to ours in some delisted ruckmen - and Meeson could be one of them. Thorp could turn it around and become an AFL contributor. But he's not going to be a vital cog in your rebuild and your recruiters won't ignore a gun 18 year old tall because you took a guy who was delisted with a year to run who couldn't get a game elsewhere.
Reading this makes me think that this could come back to haunt Hawthorn. Mitchell is 20 yo, the kid is a gun, sure he has some attitude problems, but surely Hawthorn and their leadership group must take some of the blame in their approach to his development, this has hung over hi for 3 years, and with all the skills in their footy department they could not develop him.
He is a forward, out and out, he has the X-factor, and I have been lucky enough to watch a fair bit of him as a junior. What is needed is some guidance and strategies that help him adapt to being as good as his talent is. If MFC can find this balance through their footy department, then this guy will be a vital cog, coz he will tear it up.
I know a couple of people who spoke to him recently said he was pretty focused on proving some people wrong. He is a big strong country boy from Brent Crosswell country, just wish he was gong to North with other Longford junior in Natha Grima.
I'm not an apologist for him, but really feel with the right set up and program he is a real threat. Help him grow off the field and some life skills, will see the best of a great talent.

You really do live up to your name, don't you.

Outstanding junior career like most players who came into the system. Being a young bloke from Ross (the middle of nowhere, literally), you would suspect he would take time to adjust.

TB89 wrote a good post. You don't need to flame him, just because you don't know about a player.

I dont think you understand.

Im saying what has he done to be a gun? WOW outstanding junior career not many U/18's in the draft have that do they? He played in Tasmania where there is even less talent against him in juniors so of course he looks better. And so far in the AFL he does done sweet FA except make headlines for being a prick.

Luke Molon is another gun, as is Nick Smith. They had great junior careers so they are guns.

What has Jack Watts done? What has Tom Scully done? What has any potnetial high draft pick done then? Nothing according you.

You really don't know much about Thorp do you? Even the Bay13 folks do their research. Reply to this message when you have done some.

Funny post all the same from you i say one thing then you do it sarcastically confirming my point?

Forgeting the bickering above, I have a question for TB89 -

Is it possible that despite being a fantastic junior that by a combination of things including injury and failure to adapt successfully for 3 years Thorpe has missed his shot at becoming the gun I hope he will be if we draft? Or maybe as harsh as it sounds he just doesn't have the ability to cross over from super junior to AFL level?

Delisted players are rarely guns when drafted, perhaps you need to readjust your expectations of him to begin with.

Mitch HAD all the tools to become a gun, but has been cruelled by various injuries over the journey at Hawthorn, the best you should be hoping for at this stage is a solid role player for your club, and hope he blossoms once he gets settled in your side.

Obviously there has been question marks about his attitude, but being delisted is a pretty strong wakeup call, and I'd be surprised if he didn't do his best for you club if you do in fact draft him. :thumbsu:

There's every chance he may end up a gun, but after the expectations put on him at Hawthorn, I'd be inclined to expect nothing more than a workmanlike return, and be pleasantly surprised if his output exceeds that.

Besides, as my pal Wattsgoodforyou pointed out, maybe he just needs the right environment. :p;)

Just some VFL stats:

2007 - May until Aug 11 games, 18 goals - 3 times in the best - 6 goals in his second game
2008 - March until Aug 15 games, 13 goals - 2 times in the best - never more than 3 goals in a game
2009 - April - 0 goals, 2 games

So looking at that, in his first year he seemed to be going pretty well. But in 2008 you would think he'd get better, but on paper that is an alarmingly bad year - only getting in the best 6 twice is not a very good sign. Newton has that covered by a long way. Then this year he only played 2 games.

I'm definitely happy he's training with us because I wouldn't want to pick a guy with the VFL form listed above without having a serious look at what they can do.

When does Thorp have to decide which draft(s) to nominate for? ie. how much time have the Dees got to assess him before deciding whether to commit with PSD pick 1 and ask that he nominates for that draft only, or if we're still undecided, when does he protect his own interests and nominate for both drafts, and we lose control over the situation? Are there other clubs with serious interest? Will he last til pick 34/50 if we don't commit?

Good post with the VFL stats there Masterbate. Not particularly impressive - even when he was actually playing. Therre comes a time when you have to leave your junior reputation behind you and I suspect Thorp really wouldnt have much longer left to hang his hat on being a gun junior.

Youre right - getting him to train with us is perfect. We can all see there are varying opinions around where he's at and on his temperement, so our staff and leadership group will get a first hand look at him.

If we dont like the look of him, McDonald could be an option - does anyone know why he was delisted from Brisbane?

Fair enough i went a little over the top yesterday, sorry.

I hope if we draft him he fulfil's his potential.

PS: The bloke taken after Thorp in the draft one J.Selwood IS A GUN!!:p

Good research Masterbate:thumbsu:

Your correct i think Thorp training with us does give us some insight into "IT" all. IT: meaning attitude, skills, pace, jumping, kicking.

Is anyone aware if he nominated for National Draft or is HE VERY KEEN to come to Melbourne so hes only going to nominate PSD?

Yeah, great stats there MB....I have a quick question about what sort of forward Thorp is... is he a true F/F or CHF, or more like a big flanker? Is there anyone in the AFL that he mirrors?

i think he just likes to look at himself in the mirror..

i heard from a hawks fan that he got delisted because he forgot his captain's name :)

Thanks for the poser MB, let me be a bit more succinct to you and Mr R. The kid has the skills to be the gun player he was in the junior ranks, just needs ths support and program to help him. Does he have the ability to crossover - definately, player management is the key and these clubs are spending a fortune on it. Hawthorn got it wrong with him, no doubt, but he must also take some blame. New environment, clean slate, kick in the arse, what more of a punt do you guys need to take.

You can't be any worse than having Newton at your KP or Rivers pinch hitting. Sure he and Watts will take some lumps, but if you get the good Mitch (comes from a good family and great community) that works hard for you, you work hard for him, what are the upsides? Huge. I equate Mitch's talent to Nathan Grima, also from Longford, all Mitch needs now is to talk to Nathan and find the fire, as he was more talented as a junior, but Nathan proves there is no substitute for hard work, humility and perserverance.

As for lack of talent in Tassie to Mr R, poorly informed comment. Junior clubs work exceedingly hard to provide a pathway for their kids as do clubs in suburban Melbourne. Talent Identification and players being drafted, rookied will be on par with individual TAC clubs. Plus Tassie does not have the added bonus of Messrs Demetriou and anderson chucking huge dollars at us, because we are expected to support ourselves as a traditional footy state.

Apologies was being a bit of prick. But I have followed Thorp very close. Yeah the Hawks must be kicking themselves about that one, it always felt like they picked Thorp due to the Tassie connection.

Does anyone think that you may pick Martin ahead of Scully or Trengove? Im hearing alot more people say Martin could be as good as them with good body size, good foot skills and speed. Im just starting to warm to the idea that Melbourne may take him ahead of Trengove or Scully, either way ill be happy with who ever Richmond get out of them 3:thumbsu:.

I'm not sure where, but I remember reading somewhere that we haven't even spoken to Martin... Would suggest our first 2 selections are pretty much, locked in Scully and Trengove.

Pretty much all media are saying Scully and Trengove are a lock in for Melbourne and that only the order chosen is up for conjecture.

It is also reported that the MFC haven't met with Martin , therefore I think it will be Scully and Trengove read out for the MFC on Draft Day.

May i ask what relevance this has with Mitch Thorp, surely you could have chosen any one of the 5893 threads we have going on the draft.

In answer to your question, Mitch Thorp is training with us and we are looking at picking him up.

You'll be happy with Dustin Martin. Surprising Dustin mentioned MFC hasn't talked to him cause i know the MFC recruiters love him.
