Mitch Thorp

Yeah it has been pretty much confirmed that trengove and Scully are ours, its in what order that everyone is still going on about it. That is why dustin martin is coming up. "Who is going to be 3rd pick" lol

Is anoyone able to tell me if Mitch Thorp nominated for the ND??

I am pretty certain he hasn't as yet, there has not been a lot of talk to what he will do. Maybe waiting on a indication from Melbourne before he nominates. For example if melbourne say were going to draft you, he will not nominate for the ND and only nominate for the PSD.

I am sure someone on here has enough time to find the cut of dates for nominating for either draft. If not try your luck at the phantom drafts and trading board, i am certain there is a thread there which lists importants dates over the next 6 weeks.

What's Mitch Thorp like? A younger, better Pavlich. Run all-day flanker/midfielder, genuinely dual-sided disposal, excellent reader of the play, great contested mark, so football smart he organises the entire team, etc, etc.

Pretty much the only criticisms of him was his tendency to cop a knock, and his inability to play through them. Would spend many last quarters in the hands of trainers, miss the rehab session on Tuesday, then be right for skills training on Thursday and next week, when the cycle continued.

Once he was drafted the injuries hit.

Ankle, OP, Hip, and broken foot - all going mis/undiagnosed for substantial periods of time. By our count he's only been "fit" for about six games in his career - so never had a proper pre-season, or managed to put a reasonable string of games together.

Now he's no quicker than any other KPP (zero chance of midfield), his agility is terrible, and his actual KPP skillset isn't extraordinary. He still reads the play exceptionally well, knows where to be, etc - but his body just doesn't allow him to do it.

===

My reading of the situation is that you take the punt on him getting healthy for the first time in his career (which might take 12 months) - get a full pre-season into him, and then see where he's at. If the dramatic loss of athleticism (speed/agility/endurance/leap) returns, he could be a star...if they don't, then you've pretty much wasted your pick.

Thanks for all the info mate!

Has anyone been down to training this week to see how he's going / interacting with players etc to fill in all us interstate supporters?

One of the most ridiculous comments ever posted on Bigfooty.

Thorp drops regulation marks, dummy spits and to date has merely stunk it up in the VFL. A younger, worse Brad Miller is closer to the mark.

Better than Pavlich:rolleyes:

Thought a few of you may be interested to read this description of Thorpe by Kevin 'shifter' Sheenen just before the draft. The whole article is actually a very interesting read:

MITCHELL THORP
TAS - Tassie Devils
Tall Forward 194.1, 86.4
In the mould of teammate Jack Riewoldt, Thorp possesses strong hands and a big tank. Can play forward or back, but can also run through the midfield. Was impressive with VFL side Tasmania playing 10 games. He was also named All-Australian and is an AIS/AFL Academy Graduate.

Where he will go?
A definite top 10 selection. Port Adelaide would be keen along with Collingwood who need a key forward after Tarrant's departure

His profile after winning U18 All-australian said:

Mitch Thorp - Tasmania - 195cm, 85kg, Northern Bombers
Tall defender/forward, Thorp also plays as a tall midfielder. Strong overhead and mobile, he took 26 marks for the championships, had 17 hit outs and averaged 21 possessions. Among Tasmania's best player in all three matches, he won its most valuable player award.

Ive said it before on this post already but that match against us in the NAB cup last year down in tassie he looked terrible. Slow, couldnt jump and no physical presance.
Can anyone else remember the game?

Im getting colder on drafting him by the day (even for free in the PSD). Most hawks supporters tend to agree that he is shot physically.

Give me Joely Mac at pick one if we are looking at the tried and true.

You're judging him off one NAB Cup game?

Why pick up a bloke (MacDonald) that fills a role that we already have enough of instead of getting a bloke that fills a need?

Trust me Dez! get yourself a copy of that game and watch it. It wasnt the fact he didnt get the ball it was the simple things like pace, agility, leaping and competitivness that was applaurable and alarming.

If the simple things looked hard for him it has to be very worrying.

I agree we need a key foward, absolutley, use pick 11 on that.

Joely Mac could easily replace Grimey in the back line and allow us an extra and classy cog in our midfield.

All im saying is that with Joely Mac we know what we are getting. With Mitch honestly do we have a clue?

Agree but i think you're selling Joel a bit short. He's a solid player without being great. He's skills are sound, good rebound, defnsively solid.

He'll be a solid player who provide good service but Thorpe can bring an element we don't have.

MFC's got a month to dissect and analysis Thorpe so we'll know if he's any good.

Joel Mac is a decent option but there are others ahead.

LOL - the line was there after all ;)

Seriously though, "Roosaints" is a notorious troll...

You're being far too naive, I'm afraid...

My god Jack Watts is bad.

Finishing last is embarrassing enough. But picking a gun with pick number one should be like shooting fish in a barrel. Melbourne are the first club to completely stuff it up since, well....Melbourne in '97.

Yes, OBVIOUSLY not a troll

Maybe you ought to take me a little more seriously next time, yes? ;)

Obvious knee-jerk response is obvious. And spectacularly wrong, by the way.

Seconding said spectacularly wrong response only makes you both look sillier when the reality is pointed out.

You really think that Roosaints isn't a troll...

Yes, OBVIOUSLY not a troll :o

Maybe you ought to take me a little more seriously next time, yes? ;)

Would you like me to regale you with some more of the obvious history of this particular poster? I'm certainly willing to do so.

I dont think Dez! wanted a past history or background check on the guy.

Lighten up mate, dont take it all so seriously

Fair enough Mr R... yeah, toned that down a smidge. I was prob too harsh there.

Mea Culpa in that regard.

But there are many more trolls out there than Dez would like to think, to be sure. We get plenty of them around the place, and aliases turning up here too.

That Roo character is one I've been well aware of ever since I first went onto the Bay...

yeh i always see Roosaints trolling.. he rages so hard on the bay

I see Mitch has nominated for the ND. He'd have to be a chance to get picked up towards the end of it. We may have to look at using pick 50 on him possibly???

Initially you could wonder whether or not Melb has not impressed another player, but after thinking about it for a little while, there could be a number of reasons for this decision.

I have the feeling that the most likely reason is, that Melb won't guarantee to pick him up with our 1st pick in the PSD. He may also be struggling a little on the track and/or someone out of left field has appeared...... Nothing to be stressed over at this stage...

May have been told to in an attempt to get Joel Mac and Thorpe.

Surely Thorp is a better chance to last till 50.
