Mitchell Johnson

Johnson was beyond crap with the new ball last night. He was not even close to shaping the ball out in this match. The way he is bowling now is actually naturally suited to reverse swing (see the yorker bowled first ball to Broad that should have been out).

If England have any sense (and Flintoff clearly did not) they will realise they can leave just about every ball Johnson bowls to the right hander from over the wicket. Johsnon MUST go around the wicket more to the right handers. All of England's middle order are RH's so he must sort this out.

The kind of hype around Mitchell Johnson leading up to the first test match reminded me of the buildup around Dale Steyn in the English media leading up to the first test match between SA and England last year.

Basically the media had built up Steyn to be some sort of assasin, and that England would be lucky if one of them isn't killed by a rampaging Steyn.

Anyway Steyn was belted around and looked ordinary and England said he was "over-rated". Prematurely it turned out.

In the next match Steyn tore the heart out of England and SA went on to win easily.

Mitchell Johnson needs a fair amount of bowling to reach his best, he'll click at Lords.
You have to realise Steyn is of world class standards.

I dont think Johnson is there yet.

What do you mean?

Previous history has shown that he takes time to get going, he may not fire, but you'd be foolish to right him off.

COME ON AUSTRALIA!!!

You're completely ignorant of his statistics.

He averages 16 with a S/R of 40 in the first test of a series.

That almost trebles in the second test of a series with an average of 42 and S/R of 82.

Then 31 with a S/R 53 in the third and then in the fourth it's 37 with a S/R of 85. The last can't be used as much to go by having only played in two 4 test series to date.

Hardly a case of taking a while to get going, more like goes missing.

Ye mj was woefully all over the place, was massively disappointed in his perfomance but i reckon he will only come good, if he fires the poms stand no chance, i think people tend to forget how good he was against the proteas, they have arguably the best batting lineup and he ripped through them, they all feared him big time

Hopefully with a bit more practice, he can return to the level he was at against RSA. In this test, he was woefully disappointing, his final figures are hardly justifiable.

Hmm don't get me started on MJ, in short I think he is a hack and most of the wickets he takes are from batsmen trying to put a way a junk delivery. He does take wickets regularly but beyond pace he doesn't do anything, short and wide, full and wide, full down leg side, short down leg side, can't swing the ball whatsoever unless there are freak conditions that swing the ball for him.

His last innings was pathetic, **** just put some pressure on their tail enders, get the ball close to a length, close to the stumps just a little but no he bowls junk that gets hammered to the boundary.

It's worth noting that maybe the incident with KP before the game had an impact on his performance. Reading a bit of Steve Waugh's biography this morning and he mentioned that when players get into a confrontation often their performance suffers due to the guilt and embarrassement associated with getting into a confrontation.

Both KP and Johnson didn't seem to be mentally switched on, to be honest, it is a joke that 2 grown men get into a toe to toe standoff screaming at each other. Both of them would have realised what idiots they were, hopefully they apologised to each other after the game.

Just maybe something to consider when evaluating Johnson's performance.

Maybe, just maybe he is human and had an off performance and for what ever reasons cannot procude his best. We've all played sport and worked, who here can't say they've had an off day at the office or a bad day at sport.

Even Warney and Pigeon had a session were they were off the ball the difference between these guys and the rest is the reduce the amount of times these off days occur.

Give MJ a chance good to see all 11 players can take form into the next test Collingwood is the only England player who can say he did something last test.

Johnson seems to be the type of guy who can be bowling absolute rubbish and still pick up 2 or 3 wickets...I don't think he knows where its going half the time... so the bloke at the other end has no idea..... i thought he was similar in South Africa...
If he can get everything to click and starts bringing the ball back into the right hander.. he will be super dangerous...
I like Siddle... bowled without luck in both innings.... gets good bounce and movement off the pitch and through the air... plus he has that bit of aggro in him...
I wouldnt change the attack... just maybe move Johnson to first change until he can get the seam up...

I'd say most things clicked for him in South Africa, and he was bowling super dangerous there. Durban and Perth, he was unplayable; wickets aplenty, players sent to hospital, he was lethal.

What you said in your first sentence is something a lot of us have been saying for ages; when he's not on, he bowls a lot of crap, which the batsman has no need to play it - but he'll still bowl the excellent wicket taking delivery; or a shit delivery that'll somehow get a wicket anyway.

He is basically bowling like Brett Lee when he first started. Brett used to bowl too short and often lacked alot of control.

MJ will be a much better bowler than Lee.

One thing they should do is if Mitch is swinging the ball keep him on, otherwise only give him 2-3 overs of burst and then he can bowl first change, while a guy like Siddle or Hilf can use the new ball a bit better.

I disagree. Lee got all his early wickets by being fast and raw, they weren't good deliveries, rather poor batting attacks. India's tour in 99/00 was terrible, along with the follow up to New Zealand and then back home to the West Indies. Johnson hardly exploded onto the scene as Lee did.

Drop him now - he is bowling so poorly, he's a detriment to the side. Has totally lost all form - needs to find it again. I've seen district bowlers bowl better.

Remember Gillespie in 2005? He was supposed to be our 'Mr Reliable' - fast, straight. economical. He was total crap - by the time we dropped him, his presence in the side for the first three tests had cost us significantly. He eventually got his form back some months later.

Whatever Johnson's problem's are, I don't want him trying to sort them out in a test match.
