He is so good, you can't ignore that, and he would have played if not for injuries at the wrong time.

So what if he is a bunny with the bat? Who are we, England? You pick bowlers to bowl.

Tait is the best young bowler in Australia, that should not be ignored.

Best young bowler..on his day maybe. Certainly not consistently though. Hillfenhaus is the best one IMO. Batting is essential in ODI cricket and if you have Tait, McGrath and Bracken who are less than average with the bat it is a very long tail. Johnson is a better batsman and he also provides variety with his left arm bowling. Variety is importnat on flat pitches and Johnson has shown he can get big bags of wickets. IMO the 5 bowlers that will be taken are the ones in the squad, plus Shane Watson as the all-rounder. They will not be taking Tait to the World Cup as he is unproven and way too much of a risk. Not to mention his risk of breaking down as well.

100% correct. These South Australians are starting to look quite stupid with their country town "lets push up the local boy" syndrome. A few facts;

1.Johnson is in the side, Tait is not.
2.The selectors choose the team and chose Johnson, not Tait.
3.Johnson gets wickets at international level, Tait isn't at international level.
4.Johnson is a much better ODI bowler, plain and simple
5.Johnson will be going to the world cup, Tait won't be.

Because others are better frankly.

1. Bracken
2. Lee
3. McGrath
4. Johnson
5. Hillfenhaus
6. Clark (he'll be there as much as I don't like it)
7. Harwood

Tait might get in at no8 for mine. I have never believed we can play Tait and Lee in the same side and the selectors frankly agree with this. It failed dismally in England in 2005. If Lee gets injured then there is a reason to perhaps play Tait though.
I would have Tait ahead of Harwood, but the other seven are spot on and in the right order.

Almost as stupid as the Victorians who can't see out of their own state.

And almost as stupid as people who think State pride is the only reason people talk up Tait - not like it has anything to do with his amazing figures or anything.

There's plenty of people outside South Australia that rate Tait very highly.

Bump....

4/46, against a deadset joke of a side though.

You are only as good as what's put in front of you though SS.

I don't post on the cricket board anymore, but I have enjoyed reading this thread. I think MJ has a very bright future. Un-orthadox type of running action with his shoulders. But it is getting the job done so far. He can only improve with the runs in my book. I think all in all the future of our aussie cricketers is looking bright. I could also not give a rats toss what state any of them came from, they play in the green n gold, that's all that matters!!

Abso-bloody-lutely.

I don't care what State they're from, I care about them being in the side on merit - once they're in our Test Team, their state allegiance is forgotten.

Mitchell Johnson has been consistantly doing the business. I posted earlier in this thread his stats for the last 6 ODI games and he has been class. Add his effort yesterday and he is a top prospect.

The Hilf is a huge prospect. What he has done the last 24 months has been very exiciting and he is now everyones new best friend.

I like Tait, but he is behind these two at the moment.

Our fast bowling stocks looks very good.

Why? Do you chose to ignore his domestic stats?
A guy just retired with 706 test wickets who had ordinary domestic statistics. I think the question is why do you rely on them. I've said many times when people are clinging to an argument by the skin of their teeth they always resort to the 'ever reliable' stats as living proof. Fact is they aren't, and Tait at this stage is a prospect. You're comparing him to international cricketers who as Bentleigh said, are doing the business.

JerryWexler is 100 per cent correct, so is Bentleigh. At the present time, Johnson is better than Tait, his stats for Australia prove my point. Tait could be greater than Lillee for all we know, but domestic stats mean absolutely nothing in the long picture.

Johnson showed a lot of maturity after being smacked all over the park by Loye and Bell to take 3/13 from his last four overs. He's going to be a very good bowler.

Pretty much spot on.

I agree stats aren't the be all and end all, but what better 'evidence' is there? And while there are a few exceptions, picking the people who have performed best at domestic level is generally a fairly sound strategy I would think.

It’s all about where the player and the team are at. On stats alone the fat man never should have been picked for Australia when he was.

But he looked like he had a bit of something, the team desperately needed a quality spinner and the cupboard was empty. If he had been from NSW this place would have been full of idiots throwing hissy fits about how player x from their state had better stats and should be in the side.

Stats are obviously important, but too often they are blindly quoted by idiots around here as the absolute “be all and end all” when it comes to evaluating players.

If they are doing their job properly, the selectors have to make subjective judgment calls taking into account a whole range of issues. A fact that escapes most of the block heads around here.

Yes, because quality leg spinners are very hard to find and it may be best to take a chance and look beyond the stats. But in a comparison of Johnson and Tait the stats are a lot more relevant. Saying that Johnson is better because the selectors chose him and because Tait hasn't proven himself at international level is also not a very sound argument IMO. If Tait has performed better at domestic level, then if given the opportunity, there is every chance he will perform better at international level as well.

I know what you are saying and I do like Tait, wouldn’t mind if they slipped him in for a ODI or two to have a bit of a look at him.

But Johnson has some very big wraps on him from some very highly respected people. He is a young left arm bowler at that pace and can move the ball both ways; they are hard to find too. I think he is getting favored treatment; the selectors want to give him every chance to be that once in a generation bowler. And I think that is understandable.

But on top of that I think his recent performances have been pretty good. Unless someone outside the team is performing absolutely exceptionally (or has amazing potential) it is usually very hard to dislodge someone from the team who is performing well.
