Mitchell Johnson

What, you mean his bag on the last day of a comical test where England were throwing away wickets like used tampons? It's no surprise he was completely ineffective in England's first innings when the Poms dug in for the long game and wickets were in dire need.

I'll take the patience, technique and line/length of Bird in a 5 day test match. Leave Faulkner to T20's.

We should not select Mitch Johnson but i do agree with Binga where he says that we need a bowler who can scare the poms.

Harris scares them but his injury record kinda blunts the fear, Siddle can bowl in a scary manner but he is far better at line and length, Starc is inconsistent but if he gets it right he could scare them and Patto if fit and has good rhythm has the potential to be the bowler who can scare the poms.

Faulkner's bowling was superb, under intense pressure (dead rubber or not), in the second innings.

I gave Brett the benefit of the doubt and spent ten minutes trying to mentally build even the weakest case for a Mitchell Johnson comeback.

I challenge any of you to do the same because I ended up with bubkis. Imagine you are in a selectors meeting and it is you who will put his name forward. What you got?

They are pretty good friends, I think. Play golf together when in the same city, all that sort of stuff. It's just Brett giving him PR support probably.

I think he's very much a "wait and see how he goes in the Shield" proposition. If he's in good form, he's clearly in our best four bowlers, but if he's not... well, we all know how bad it looks.

Certainly shouldn't be ruled out, but has quite a lot of proving to do.

I don't think he's worth the risk even if he's going well in Shield. It's a shame as on the occasions he does get late inswing, it's so late it's almost on them before it ducks in. Makes him the most dangerous bowler we've got but it's just not worth it. That boat has sailed unless around four bowlers get injured.

I'd rather try Hazelwood this summer than go back to Johnson.

Keep in mind that Pattinson's injury could easily have been affecting him especially in the second test
played injured in the second test, hence rubbish.
Was good in the first test.
i will never see pattinson and cummins braining the english together at full pace :( :(

Not a huge fan of starc but if we are going to gamble on a scattergun leftie lets at least go with the kid who seems to have his head together.

If johnson is in the running for a test spot this summer i can only assume it's because we have multiple injuries to quicks, if everybody is fit he's not even close.

Johnson should certainly be a first pick in the shorter forms as his record with the white ball is exceptional but just like lee you can't assume his form with the white ball means anything for his test prospects, sadly neither man could ever find the same consistency in test matches as they achieved in one day cricket.

If Johnson can keep his action as it is, he is a certainty for the first test.

Just looking magnificent at the moment. Great pace, great lines and excellent control.

His bowling IQ seems to have improved as well.

He's definitely changed his run-up for the better and his arm is higher at point of delivery.

If nothing else, he has set out the game plan for bowling to Trott: can't handle fast, short stuff at the body.
no the plan was already established. indeed, it was only established once MJ left the team

I think Johnson will play at the Gabba in the first test.

It will probably come down to who is fit the way things are going. At least Johnson is letting them go pretty well at present. I agree with you that Perth is where he could do the most damage.

I think there are clear thoughts in the selector's minds that the best 4 quicks are Siddle, Harris, Pattinson and Starc.

Most of us would agree on the first 3.

With Pattinson and Starc injured and Harris a day to day proposition, there are going to be spots available in the squad for the Gabba. I reckon you could name an extra 5 blokes (on top of the 4 above) and someone else could end up popping up between now and then and make the team.

So the extra 5 - Bird, Cummins, Faulkner, MJ, Hilfenhaus (using CA contracts as a sort of pecking order).

Leaves guys like Hazlewood, Sayers, NCN and Cutting as realistic darkhorses and then the selectors could pick a Sandhu out of their backsides. The shield is going to be really vital to shape the attack.

Cummins is still along way from Test fitness and Test prepared though isn't he?

Newly appointed Australia bowling coach Craig McDermott was on SEN half an hour or so ago and dropped Mitchell Johnson's name repeatedly. A sign me thinks that Johnson is right at the forefront of the selectors - of which McDermott isn't I realise - thinking.
