Johnson before 2009 Ashes:

21 (Mat) 94 (wickets) 8/61 11/159 28.01 (Avg) 2.97 (RPO) 56.5 (SR) 2 (5WI) 1 (10WM)

Johnson including and after 2009 Ashes:

26 96 (Wickets) 6/38 10/132 34.51 (Avg) 3.70 (RPO) 55.8 (SR) 5 (5WI) 1 (10WM)

Pretty big drop off in Average and Runs Per over, althouh his Strike rate actually improved. The increase in 5 wicket innings suggests that he was a lot more hot and cold after the 09 Ashes.

How many 5fers outside the WACA?

How many 5fers outside the WACA?

Only the one against England last season was on the WACA, so 4 outside Perth (1 against the Windies in Adelaide, 1 against NZ in Hamilton - which was also the 10fer in that list, 1 against India in Mohali and one against England at Headingly)

His figures are quite similar to Brett Lee (wickets per test, average and SR).

I'm not arguing he is a great, but I am saying he has had a solid test career - contrary to some of the inane rubbish I have seen written about the guy here.

im not quite sure how brett lee got so many wickets, looked decidedly mediocre throughout his red-ball career but somehow got poles, mcgrath, kaspa, and dizzy kept the pressure right up and then chainsaw brett comes in for the kill

id love to see a stat of how many wickets he got against batsmen between 8 and 11.

SURELY !!!! :(

I'd play Stark infront of him any day and thats saying something atm, but I reckon Stark has plenty to offer in the future, whereas MJ is finished unless we have an injury curse from hell...godforbid.

Thanks for the memories MJ

Thankfully we have better options now, that can be given a chance.

They should cast his ankle and put in front of the MCG "I saved Australian cricket from the brink"on the plaque below

Lee had a few really good seasons, and plenty of mediocre ones.

Lee had a great first 12 to 18 months and that got everyone excited. He never lived up to the hype after that.

That said he was a good honest very fast bowler who was adequate as a 2nd or 3rd fast bowler in the team.

lee would also position nicely and has a good argument for being in our best 11/12 for ODI cricket.

Cummins and pattinson have had fantastic starts, and we all hope they have magnificent careers, but Lee is the example on why we shouldn't get all excited till they get 2 or 3 years under their belt.

McGrath is the one we all hope to see for skill, subtly, survivability and enduring form over a decade. If one of cummins or pattinson are within 20% of McGrath we have a potentially great bowler, if both of them are within 20% of McGrath we have the buildings of a great attack.

lee was way too frustrating.

never averaged in the 20's for a calendar year. 3 years in the teens (1999 - 1 test, 2000 - 6 tests, 2007 - 4 tests), and every other year was 30 and above.

Could we see Mitchell come good under Mcdermott? It seems to be pretty obvious that the previous bowling coach didn't have a clue, was tweaking actions during the game etc.

good question :thumbsu:

i have also wondered why people don't think the Team McDermott effect could turn MJ around in the same way as Siddle and Hilfy

if he doesn't, then it doesn't matter because we finally have pressure on for fast-bowling spots and a depth of choice but is worth remembering how good Johnson is at his absolute best: un-freakin-playable!

i am as frustrated by Mitch as anyone but IF he comes good and wins a place in the side then that is good for Aust cricket and I'm all for it

(please note big IF ;))

Pattinson
Siddle
Hilfenhaus
Cummins
Harris
Starc
Johnson

Appears to be the order at the moment, bye bye Mitch

Usually he's quite good in limited overs cricket. He was absolutely horrible last night though.

First game back in almost a year. Not really surprised TBH. The Poms enjoy facing him as well. Johnson has always been at his best in the sub continent in ODI cricket as well.

What he was doing in the national team at this point is anyones guess... Any idiot could have told you he was going to be underdone.

I'm hoping that the selectors are throwing him out to the wolves so they can justify never selecting him again.

A bit like Ponting with Lewis and McGain.

Disappointing considering he looked to be moving it a little early; could have been dangerous, but his bad side came out with the no balls and erratic nature.

Who else is available that could be in England atm...Faulkner? Bird? Coulter-Nile?

Well ther is Pattinson and Hilfenhaus who did not play.

I would have 10 fast bowlers in from of him....
Actually 15.....

Interested to see if there is one person who believes he should still be in Australia's plans....

The Selectors did - they are the ones that count and Pip says he's been tearing it up......in the nets!
