Disagree but my point was that he was a far better bat than Symonds which I'd have thought was fairly indisputable. But each to their own.
At state level sure. Test level debatable. Symonds also bowled. And only one of the all time great fieldsmen.

His bound to make runs at some stage, and I think this will be the test to do it. It will vindicate the selectors by picking him. I still think Smith won't utilize him properly anyway.

I'm not sure if you watched Brad Hodge by your comments. Hodge was a fine cricketer. Great fielder too.
At state level. Go and watch his Test matches where he shat the bed.

Hodge myth will live on forever around here though I guess with all the Bushranger fanboys.

Bizarre comment. Hodge was a good bat, I watched him from U17's and the guy was a freak. Symonds wasn't - he had concrete feet and a shit technique. Being a fan boy doesn't enter into it, maybe being an over sensitive Vic basher does. Oh and Hodge was a good fielder and reasonable off spinner (but we were talking batting).

FMD I'm talking about TEST matches.

I've never said that he was anything less than a magnificent FC player.

You were talking about fan boys m8. Try having a reasonable chat without being a dick about it m8.

Hodge was a good test bat in a great era. In some ways similar to McGill. In this era Hodge would be our second or third best bat. Symonds would still battle for a game.

Symonds was never anything beyond a mediocre test bat who just happened to be good m8s with the captain.

Yeah it's hard to understand how some players are allowed multiple failures and multiple recalls while Ferguson gets no second chances.

Players from SA are still suffering from all the extra Tests that Greg Blewett was gifted (46 Tests, 79 innings, 34.02 average, 41.26 strike rate, 4 hundreds, 15 fifties).

You only get one limited chance now if you go from the Redbacks to a Baggy Green, then you're out it seems (Dan Cullen, Peter George, Callum Ferguson, Joe Mennie).

Cullen and George never should've been picked.

Mennie arguably wasn't the next best quick outside the test team when he got a call up, but CA's one test wonder selections last year were dumb.

Ferguson also went back to SA and failed between the tests so made the decision to drop him much easier especially with Handscomb making a double century
He was a bit unlucky that his Test career coincided with the biggest form slump of his career. He was horribly out of touch most of last season.

Hodge was junk at Test level, forget the grossly inflated average
If you didn't particularly rate him that's fair enough, but to suggest he was junk is well wide of the mark.

As demos said, he did have issues with the short ball.

But you don't make 203 against a fairly handy attack as he did if you are junk.

It was really the only thing of note he did in the side in 6 Test matches, and generally he looked poor. Junk may be too far as well but he sure as hell wasn't very good.

Yet just because he had an average of 50+ Vics crap on like he was the most robbed player in the history of the game getting dropped. It's a myth.

RE Hodge, I was more worried about his tendency to waft at full outswingers.

Still think he was unlucky not to have played more Tests though. No way Marcus North/Andrew McDonald were superior batsmen to him overall (though they could bowl).

That's not the only reason.

The "his average of 25 in Pura Cup isn't good enough this season but we're picking boys club member Martyn who's averaged 23" rubbish also contributes.

You're clutching at straws if the only thing somebody manages in a grand total of 6 Tests was hit a double century...

Well if you're picking between two people with an ordinary average, it makes sense to go with the one who doesn't have a reputation as a rolled gold arseh*le.
