Because you would expect any other player in his position (injury-prone, lacking Test team security, one of the biggest IPL earners) to take the money and run.

Taking an effective 50% pay cut because he wants to better himself as a red-ball batsman is a pretty big thing, and really shows his dedication to the long format of the game.
And yet he gets called as a flog by many both on bf and FB land.

Maxwell should take notice
Yup then don’t complain when not selected.
If you paid attention, you'll observe that Maxwell did exactly this in 2015/16. Didn't help his test prospects, but improved his red ball cricket.

There's a reason he's an immeasurably better red ball player now than he was two/three years ago. He's worked on it, both through his coaching and in playing red ball cricket every chance he gets.

So he's finished improving now and gone back to T20? Or was it just an image thing he did it for and chucked the shits when it didn't go his way, like when he tried to join the blues

I also don't understand why it's so lauded.

It's not like he's in desperate need of a pay day but has still selflessly put the Ashes ahead. He got a million last year, plus his CA contract would be well into 6 figures (especially being around the team/squad in all 3 forms), plus his BBL contract etc. Guy would have money falling out of his ears, the obvious decision is to improve his test career.

I would agree, only the obvious thing is not the normal thing now with all the money on offer for cricketers in short formats. He's had injuries on and off during his career so I wouldn't blame him for grabbing the cash but he's obviously very, very keen to become a proper test cricketer.

He has tried to get county contracts before to improve his red-ball cricket but they fell through.

?

Hang on a minute; first, you say that Maxwell should take notice of Mitch Marsh, because Marsh chose to play a season of County instead of IPL. Now, you're saying the above, when you've learnt Maxwell did the same two seasons ago. The two statements are inconsistent, unless you are holding Maxwell to a standard you aren't for Marsh.

He's still playing red ball cricket, plenty of it.

Anyway, enough of me derailing a thread about Mitch Marsh with discussion about Glenn Maxwell. Hope Marsh continues in his upward trajectory and becomes a test level no. 6.

Maxwell's been a victim of being pigeonholed as a white ball specialist robbing him to chance of playing a full shield season regularly. Blame the administrative fixturing, not the player. I'd assume if you were given the opportunity to play white ball cricket for Australia or the IPL where you can make an annual wage in 6 weeks you'd take it too.

Didn't Glenn Maxwell only sign up to play in the limited overs cricket for Yorkshire and then got suspended for missing training?

He also didn't skip IPL. Finch was the overseas player for Yorkshire for most of that year.

Very good diving catch to give Australia an opening.

I didn't think his bowling was too terrible - his pace was reasonable and he was clearly bowling wide to sucker Malan into a drive. It just didn't come off.

A pretty shit fifty from our resident passenger in fairness
True. He's only belting Ali.
I wouldn't keep quoting me bus boy.

I will remember this when he fails. You've won the battle but we may yet win the war.
Belting a shit England side doesn't make him as a player.

Handscomb with his lead boots batting got dropped ages ago mate.
and you accuse others of making it about state lines.
Marsh's worth as a test player is yet to be determined, yet some are crowing early.

Fair to say he's been excellent in the series. A big hundred, helped bat out a draw and now a 50 while also pushing the runs for a declaration. Early? To a point, but he's got some credits in the bank at last.
The MCG innings he undoubtedly deserves credit. Scored when it was needed.
Not sure what to think with this innings, only Bancroft has failed to make 50 so it clearly is a decent pitch. Playing well though.
Give less credence to the WACA ton. That wasn't a road, it was a airport runway.

I think we should reassess after the SA tour.

Good on him for really making a stamp this time around. Pitches have been absolute roads and I’m still not sure if he’ll be ready once the ball starts moving a bit (he had big issues last time around) but runs are runs regardless of where you score them and there’s no doubt that mentally he has made a huge improvement.

The South Africa series will be a good proving ground for him. Really hope he will be able to succeed over there, it’d be great to have a seam all rounder at 6 who offers a bit of bowling and you can still count on to average 35+. Showed today he was able to keep his wicket while also upping the tempo. Seems perfect to play a Andrew Symonds like role at number 6.
