Maxwell's bowling in Perth will be party pies at absolute best though.
So will a massively under-done marsh bowling 130km/h. They'll be picking him off at will on a flat track. At least the slow nature of maxwell's bowling will make him hard to hit at times because they can't just use the pace. Plus marsh's batting means he no way in hell deserves a call up over maxwell. It's just dumb shit man

I'd rather go with plan C...pick neither!

However I understand the reasoning behind a fast bowling A/R. I'm just livid that Cartrwright has decided to bat like an absolute dud this season. He'd be the perfect option. He is a better bat than both, and he can bowl a few overs if need be.

Cartwright is so far off the mark it's not funny, he's an option behind Stoinis and Marsh - I told you Marsh was coming.

To be fair, while I'm not advocating for his selection at all, Marsh was by all accounts bowling with some real heat against Queensland.

Mike Hussey was a better bowler than what Cartwright is. It’s a shame he hasn’t been able to find form with the bat this season but he’s only young and there is still plenty of time for him. Should only be considered as a batsman though, his bowling isn’t much chop. I don’t know how people consider him as an all rounder.

If he gets himself into a position where he is one of the top 6 batsman I’m happy to see him selected, but I don’t want him picked over a better batsman because they consider his mediums ‘useful’.

Hasn't Marsh only just started bowling again anyway? I mean his batting has been ok to good this season, for an all-rounder, but he hasn't been bowling until the most recent match. He shouldn't play.

So Sean Abbot is no longer the penguin’s love child

I almost wish he was! He almost couldn’t be any worse than Marsh has been at test level with the bat!

Things seem to have finally clicked for Maxy. I just find it a real shame the selectors view him as an Asian specialist when I think he can be so much more than that.

From what I saw on the stream in this match Marsh was doing much better than Stoinis with the ball.

Stoinis is a very handy limited over player with the bat and ball. He's already shown that playing for Australia. I'm really looking forward to watching him play for the Stars this summer. But I can't believe he's been raised in articles as one of the contending all rounders for the Test team. He shouldn't have been playing for Victoria based on his form in the Shield last summer. And even considering his personal tragedy he's lucky to be playing for WA this summer.

Stoinis is a woeful all-rounder. He's ordinary with the bat and ball. So far off being an Australian player, well should be if it wasn't for stupidity at the selection table.

Made a century and two unbeaten half centuries in the JLT Cup.

Made a century, a 95 and an unbeaten 38 in the Shield. Has bowled 22 overs in these two competitions combined.

He's not going to replace his brother, so can only assume if he was to take part Shaun would be pushed up to #5 and Handscomb or Khawaja would drop out. If one of the quicks is injured they'll just replace them like for like with Bird who is in the squad already.

Odd timing given he's only just started bowling again. The top 6 is settled with Shaun making runs and changing it up to bring in a guy who on average bowls fewer than 10 overs an innings in test cricket makes no sense. Bowled a heap of overs in the Perth last last year when South Africa batted for 2 days but bowling 26 overs in a test a big jump from bowling a few overs in Shield cricket.

2 Marshes? There is hope yet for England! Only need to win 2, draw 1!!!

2 Marshs > 1 Malan + 1 Vince

On topic - selectors obviously fearful of another road. Rightly or wrongly, it's a selection seemingly based entirely on bowler workloads. I sincerely hope the WACA curator can put up one final decent wicket.

It's not the most ridiculous decision they've made, but even if it's tarmac I'd prefer Maxwell. At the least he can bowl a few half-trackers and hope that Root swats one to deep mid wicket while he's in the nervous 50s.

Doubt he'll play if the pitch has a hint of life in it.

if the pitch is going to be so dead that we need 5 bowlers why not just play bird?

We can't be worried abut batting depth for the match if we are willing to bring back a bloke who based n his test performances should be batting behind cummins and paine so why not just pick a frontline quick who can get through plenty of overs?

My take is that they're trying to strike an incredibly delicate balance between reinforcing the bowling in anticipation of a larger number of overs, but not to the point of making it a top 5 rather than a top 6. It's much easier when you have a Symonds or a Flintoff...not so much when you have a Marsh. As others have said, it all comes down to this stupid obsession with all-rounders. We can thank the 2005 Ashes for that.

They really should just be looking to keep the same XI. Decent, intelligent bowlers (i.e the Saffie quicks last year) are still dangerous enough on the WACA.

Marsh is a much better bowler than Stoinis and always has been.
Of all the allrounders we have he's the only one with the ability to be an actual legitimate test bowling option.

Why even bother with an all-rounder? Smith won't bowl him. Besides, if we HAVE to have one, are there any rules against picking a woman? Ellyse Perry is arguably the best all-rounder in the country.

Ellyse Perry would get murdered by male batsmen

Meh it's enough. Sometimes opposition can drop their guard against someone like that. If we 'have' to have an all rounder in he's still the best option to send down a few and relieve our 4 front liners that have dominated so far and we should just back in.

Maxwell is not an allrounder he is zero threat with the ball stop calling him one he can be in one dayers but not Test cricket. He should get a game ahead of Handscombe who is clearly out of form and is getting easily exposed atm.
Otherwise if they want an all rounder Mitch Marsh it is like it or not.

Fair enough i guess but if we really wanted an all-rounder why not just promote cummins up to 6 and bring in patto, bird or sayers? Cummins is literally a better test batsman and bowler than marsh

If Handscomb is going to be replaced it should be by another batsman in Maxwell. If M.Marsh is going to play to take the pressure off the current fast bowlers he should replace either Starc,Hazelwood or Cummings.
