I reckon England are playing with about 4 short. It will not matter whether it is Marsh or Handscomb playing. You could have DaRick, Luke Parker, Bad Genius or even me batting at six and Australia will still win.

There was only 1 time I got a promotion from number 11 and that was when the number 10 broke his hand and was in hospital!

There was a running joke at my club and that was "just declare before I bat"

There was 1 season where I averaged 0.25...and I was lucky they counted the 2 runs as it was off my pad lol!

I could never bat!

My beef isn't so much about Mitch or even Shaun getting selected. Both had cases for selection this time in.

My issue is that different rules seem to apply to those two and seem to have done for years.

The first sign of good form for the Marsh's and they're selected. And next to undroppable. Yet someone like Handscombe shows something vaguely short of perfection and he's out straight away. It was a relief at the end of last Summer when the batting lineup was pretty much sorted out and the Marsh era was behind us but here we are, yet again.....

If Marsh comes in and fails it's going to hurt his chances going forward. He's in a small patch of Shield form, so if he comes in and fails it will be harder for CA to justify the next time they pick him on a small patch of Shield form. I mean he's a Marsh so it'll mean he has to score a 50 in a tour match or something to get back in the frame, but still.

There's talk of him playing in the 3rd test, but what about the 4th and 5th? Recent MCG tests have gone 4-5 days even when we've won easily. Against India we bowled nearly 200 overs and we still had Watson who bowled 22 of them. We picked Cartwright (for 4 overs) and two spinners at the SCG last year. If Marsh plays in the 3rd test and isn't a flop I expect him to play the rest of the series.

This bloke from my era was pretty ordinary.

He was a damn fine bowler though. Bowled really quick leggies/toppies. Destroyed Australia in 77/78 at the G with 12 wickets.

If Marsh was to play and Australia retain the Ashes following the Perth test I can't see much change occurring to the Test lineup. The only possibility for the Boxing day test would be one or maybe two of the quicks have a rest and replaced by Bird and Sayers or another bowling option. I would think that all 3 quicks would want to play in the Sydney test

There's really no point understanding why the Marsh's get selected. It's just a fact of life. Like gravity or climate change.

A lot of WA supporters will say "He's in form" and that Handscomb is "Out of form" and that averages mean little compared to form yet fail to understand that averages will show the quality of the player as it encompasses both phases of good/bad form. Numbers don't tell the full story, although they tell significantly more than "form".

I did read a humerous article explaining that Marsh is the incumbent due to his injury in India, that somehow his dismal performances were irrevelant and that he could have possibly played out that series on form.
