He isn't going to suddenly become a decent number six though, 31 tests is a very large sample and he has proven to be a mediocre test batsman clearly not good enough to bat at six.

We either find a keeper who can average 35-40 who can bat at six or we bat marsh at 8 as part of a four man attack, batting him at six and paine at seven just isn't going to work even on our flatter decks it's also going to waste Smith's peak years as he will get stranded with the tail more often than not.

Hard to argue with that.

gonna be hard pressed to find a keeper who averages 35-40 (we've only had one in our history and haddin @ 33).
and marsh aint in our best 3 quicks imo , so he doesn't get a Guernsey @ 8.

Aboslutely. And even none of the guys you mention did just that and they are legends of the game.

Tony Greig is an often overlooked member of the great all rounders club. Averaged just over 40 with the bat, 2.5 wickets a test (141 from 58) at 32. That is a very strong record - probably the equivalent level for a batting all rounder as Ian Botham was to a bowling all rounder, although is must be said Beefy's overall career record was seriously depreciated by the final 6 years of his career.

There's four blokes that have the +40/-30 and taken more than 10 wickets in the process. Two are knockabout Aussie legends who most wouldn't expect on this list - Doug Walters and Darren Lehmann. Though obviously their status as genuine all rounders would be in question as they only took about a wicket every second test, which would make them good part time bowlers.

The other two are the only two that have done the +40/-30, played more than 10 tests and took over a wicket a test - Aubrey Faulkner and Charles MacCartney.

In summary, +40 with the bat and -30 with the ball is not even close to a realistic expectation of any cricketer.
The only exception I can think of is Imran Khan, from memory he was pretty much pure bowler in the early part of his career, and similar to Steve Smith in ODI's if you take the first part of his career when he played a different role out he is a 40+/30- allrounder.

Sounds like Mitch will be nursing a sore hand for a while. Disappointing for him as it felt like these Shield games were going to be absolutely crucial for him. Kept Ben Stokes out of cricket for a while when he hit his hand in a change room as well.

Having said that, if someone was going to find a way to injure himself in a change room after showing glimpses of promise in his last test then would anyone be that surprised when it would turn out to be him

Incredible headline/picture combo from the abc.

The fact he probably would have kept his spot at six without really earning it makes this even dumber, but this is what happens when you reward a mediocre performer time after time he gets soft and arrogant.

Let's remember this bloke with a test average of just 25 was made australian vice captain not long ago, others have to prove themselves over and over he just needs to not break his hand on a wall to keep his spot and he can't even do that right.

He deserves a long spell out of the test side , he might learn some humility and hopefully become a better player if he is forced to work as hard as others to earn another chance.

What a cancerous load of toss that post is. Humility? Get a clue.

These are the fans crying along with their captain that a Sheffield Shield result wasn't deliberately manufactured for their benefit this week - Victorian fans have always maintained a fairly tangential relationship with reality.
