Mitchell vs. Cross vs. Bartel

Mitchell - best clearance player, best ball winner
Bartel - best goal kicker, best mark
Cross - best handball, best tackler

These are about the only stats between this lot that cannot be disputed.

Cross > Bartel > Mitchell.

All very close, though. Cross is unbelievable - most of the things he does isn't noticed. He is extremely fit, a deceivingly great mark and has Brett Kirk written all over him.

Bartel too is quite underrated and is a high goal kicking midfielder.

All fantastic tacklers too might I add.

lol someone gete this guy some glasses

Well I don't know if you saw another one of my threads where I stated that Melbourne have the best youngsters. IMO they do. But you give me the sheetes the way you over-rate McLean.

McLean is an A grade player no doubt and I would love him at the Hawks but he is not in the elite and never will be.

He will be a player in the mould of Haselby or say Bell. If you like maybe a Scott Thompson.

Sam Mitchell however is a champion and probably will win a brownlow some day.

Get your hand off it.

I can't stand it how people underrated the term "champion". You have NFI. McLean is a better chance of ending up as a champion. Mitchell will forever be remembered as a king extractor, but unfortunately he will also be remembered as being fairly close to one dimensional. Two dimensional if he is lucky. Players like McLean and Cross have a lot more strings to their bow than Pretty Boy Mitchell.

Mitchell is a surpeme ball winner and has improved his running game to be more damaging. Is still developing his game. Is a star.

How is he a star if he's stilldeveloping?

don't get me wrong, he's awesome at what he does and imo the best player in this list - but he doesn't hurt teams like McLean does and he doesn't seem to influence matches in hawthorn's favour no matter how many touches he gets.

I guarantee you, any game McLean got 35 touches in Melbourne would win

I love the way Jimmy Bartel goes about his game. My favourite player in the league actually. Tackles, marks, kicks goals and uses the pill well, plus has a bit a mongrel. Sorry Mitch, but I prefer Jimmy, but I also believe Melbourne fans overrate McLean like no other team overrates a player in the competition.

I would love to pick Bartel, but he is not up to the standard of Mitchell yet. Bartel has way more ability than what he has let on so far in his career.

This year he did not grab any games by the scruff of the neck like he could IMO. Look back at this second half of 2004. Now thats what Jimmy should be doing more often.

How is he a star if he's stilld eveloping?
Quite easy really. He has been on the record as saying he has been working on his speed, and his hurting of opposition teams. He had alot more run in his game this year, tried to carry the ball and not just be the guy who goes in and gets it.
Is still developing that side of his game.
And as cosby has already said, Mitchell is a star of the game.

Poor argument. You bag others for underating McLean but continually underate players you compare him to in order to prove your point.

If McLean got those 35 touches for Hawthorn in 2005 or 2006 would we have won with Williams as our tall target? To say that Mitchell doesn't win games off his own boot for Hawthorn therefore he isn't a top quality is rubbish. There are many reasons Hawthorn has struggled over the last year or so and they aren't Mitchell. The lack of outside runners with decent footskill is the problem, combined with a lack of tall targets, that's why Mitchell isn't influencing games. Do you think if Hawthorn had Green, Bruce and Yze kicking long to your forward line we'd lose games if Mitchell was dishing the ball out 35 times a game to them either?
