Exactly, gotta give these kids a go before dismissing.
Just because a kid is tall, doesn't man they should be taken.

I counted 5 genuine talls in the first 30 players picked. Only 2 in the first round, which is a fair indication of what all clubs thought of the talls.

Most people in the know talk about how each tall had just as much worng as they did upside. So, best not to be speculative at pick 11 and 18. Personally, I want to know these picks can play. Gysberts was AIS, highly regarded, can initially play in a number of position and really compliments the first 2 picks.

Here's a question: All talk on these boards state how they are happy with Tapscott but some query Gysberts. Would you think the same if we took Tapscott at 11 and Gysberts at 18?[/quote]

The whisper was that the Swans were looking at Gysberts so we pounced

Tapscott was still there at 18 which is a bonus

The FD stated they got every player they wanted which was better than last year when they failed to pick up Jack Redden

Melb. rated Gysberts the fourth best midfielder in the draft, better than Morabito, Cunnington, Rohan etc.
They rated Butcher as the only KP worth drafting early as Talia, Black and Carlisle were seen more as flankers than key position players.
We already have 190cm flankers such as Morton, Jurrah, Bate, Garland, McNamara, Dunn etc.
In the absence of a pack marking forward, melb. were smart to pick best-available midfielders with their first four picks and gamble on Fitzpatrick with pick 50.

There was pack marking players such as griffths available but the FD obviously didnt rate them high enough compared to the mids...in the future though whats going to happen if watts goes down with an injury...

Wow interesting to hear some pretty strong thoughts on pick 11 around here.

I thought we did very well tbh. I had Gysberts at 14 in my phantom draft but I did presume that clubs would take a few talls on a 'needs basis' before that.

I can see why they picked him - not eaxcatly a one man highlight reel but if you watch he has incredibly sure hands - I cant find him fumbling anywhere. His skill are decent, he has a big body and uses it, but the main thing BP will have liked is his decision making and time in traffic. Always seems to pick the right option and doesnt seem to panic under pressure - ala Grimes/Morton. Yes a surprise we didnt go tall but Im prepared to back BP (and the 15 other recruiters) that the talls just arent as good as we might have thought.

Tapscott was a terrific pick. He will be a terrific player - beautiful disposal by foot and plays quite tall for his actual height. Doesnt have a huge engine but can move up the ground very well. Keeps his feet and has a sense for goal. Looks a little arragant and aggressive which I really really like. Classy footballer.

Gawn - have seen him play at Sandy and could end up a bargain for pick 34 as I think hell make it at AFL. His highlight package shows him taking some pretty strong contested grabs and we know hell win tapouts on size alone. Gets compared to Sandilands but hell be much stronger and more athletic - a couple of preseasons in the gym and this guys gonna be BIG. Value for money wise Im going out and saying I think this guy will be our best pick. If he can keep taking contested marks at AFL the coaches will love being able to strategise on match ups by putting him in the goalsquare on occasion.

To show Im not just biased Im not as confident with Fitzpatrick. Has some good base to work with, but he doesnt move like an AFL player for mine. Ive got no problem with the pick as I had him at 28 in my own phantom draft - but hes going to need some real development to make it. 201cm and very fast means theres always a chance tough.

Verdict: a very good set of selections for the Dees even given our strong picks.

We persist with spuds like Miller and Newton.

So the club rated Butcher as the only KP worth drafting? What's wrong with drafting someone like Griffiths or Black, who may not have all the tools, but through development, are a chance to fill a gaping hole in our list? Why do we employ development coaches!

People need to understand that with the advent of GC17 and GWS, clubs won't have access to draft gun KP players for the next 3 years.

And football departments don't always get things right. We gave Bell and Newton 2 year deals after 2008, and Meesen was given a 3 year deal in 2007. Supporters are entitled to question the decisions of our football department.

You can bank on Gysberts and Tapscott becoming AFL players. Griffiths and Black were a punt that would pay handsomely if it came off but we obviously werent prepared to punt with first round picks.

We're not challengin for a few more years so dont panic - there is plenty of time to find or trade for another KPP if its required. And with actual quality footballers ont he list it leaves us in a stronger position to do so if the time comes.

Im ok with these selections.

Lets just hope you and the FD are right...

Was a bit shell shocked after the draft as I didn't expect 4 midfielders. I am not unhappy about it now as you cannot have anough quality mids. My only concern is that I don't think we have enough talls that we can develop over the next few years.
If Garland doesn't come up or Warnock/Frawley gets injured for a time, who do we have as back-up. Considering that GC17 and GWS will be raping the draft in the next 2 years, the likelihood of quality talls being available is negligible. There will always be mids available but how many do we need. We don't even have any KP rookies that we can elevate at end 2010.
Liam Pickering this morning on SEN could not believe we did not take Talia at 11.

Well im hoping its a sign that the club has confidance that his foot is fine.

Makes me feel good that we didn't if he's for it.

The same Liam Pickering who got slammed by every Melbourne supporter for saying the Geelong had a better list than Melbourne in 2006, when we were sitting in the top 4, and Geelong were out of the 8.

Two years on, the same Melbourne supporters are bagging our list management back then, and lauding Geelong's.

Maybe Pickering knows something about football.

They'd be the only ones. Does look a good player though.

It's not that Griffiths was not rated, just that his injuries scared clubs. rated a top-6 talent otherwise so I'm glad the Tigers took the punt.

Maybe Pickering knows something about football.
Maybe just a little. He's a sharp cookie is Pickers.

Gysberts>>Lucas. Sure you don't believe me but it's what the whole Fd thinks, he was a stretch ahead of Lucas. Knowledge>BF hype

im pretty glad we didnt take lucas, he plucks his eyebrows, we are trying to build a tough team

Where are the box of tissues?? Bunch of whiny sooks posting in this thread.

Like anyone here has any idea of what they are talking about! "Wah, wah ,wah we should have taken Talia because he is a tall" and "Gysberts is a shock, can't believe it, because they didn't talk him up much he must be rubbish."

Ignorance is bliss, yes? Judge these kids and the decisions we have made much further down the track rather than commenting on things you all know nothing about after 24 hours. Any of you sit at the selection table and go through months of scouting? No.

So get over it.

Certainly hope so... be great to finally have both Garland and Frawley together in the backline again...

Or substitute the word hype for 'group-think' - it's a pretty insidious phenomenon around BF, to be sure.

Awsome contribution Cowboy. Now F off back into hybernation - we are actually enjoying our ignorance.

how about jurruh mate? dont rate him obviously? and how the hell can u even suggest talia is further developed than watts? stupid call... watts will start to show us next year why he has so much hype surrounding him and talia will not even be close to him as they both develop...

Jurrah is a freak but I don't consider him a potential power forward who you can bomb the ball long to in a contest.

In regards to my point about development, I should have specified I mean physical development, of which I believe Talia to be at the same level as Watts.
