Mixing music

A guy I knew in the Melbourne indie-scene once ran a night called "Easy Life". It started at the Scu-Bar before moving over to the Up Top Cafe. His idea for the night was to get people to just play their favourite tunes (his only requirement was no metal and/or rap) and he asked me if I wanted to give it a try.....and naturally, I took it up and did sets at both venues.

The clubs had their own equipment (2 turntables, 2 CD players, plus mixing desk), so for me, it was just a matter of taking along my own CDs and records. It took only a few minutes to learn how to merge one track to the next, but then again, I wasn't doing any mixing like what the dance DJs do (after all, I was mainly playing 3 minute indie-pop tunes and Northern Soul stuff). However, I do know that one guy did do a night of dance mixes using the same equipment that I had used.

The last time I DJed was 2 years ago when a friend organised a dance party at the Laundry (upstairs section) plus another night, also at the Laundry, where I just played songs during the changeovers between bands. Later this year, OPC/Simpatico will be doing some gigs in Melbourne and hopefully, I'll be doing some DJing inbetween sets.

And as a quick plug, there is a new record shop in Melbourne called SLAP!. It's on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy and they specialise in electronic/experimental/dance music.

I make my own dance music yeah. Sometimes its hard...sometimes its easy. I can mix...but dont have my own decks...i use my mates and i reckon its loads of fun...you can experiment and stuff around quite a bit and play around with what records go with what etc etc

I make my own music using Mixman Studio Pro...and more importantly Fruityloops which is a professional electronic music making program which takes forever to work out how to use it properly, but once you do its great fun. Some of the stuff ive done sounds alright, other stuff sounds really bad.

Two decks and a mixer is on my shopping list at the moment...once i get a job and get money together ill be getting them and start mixing properly

I guess the best I am doing is cutting and pasting my own mixes of the Beach Boys' SMiLE sessions and making songs. My mix of Good Vibrations is awesome!!!!!! I'm just doing it roughly though, without any fancy equipment. I can just post all the pieces I used on the SMiLE site and all the devotees will know what I'm on about so no need to make it all fancy lol. :D

Ok - I have a little music projects I want to do (which involve mixing) - however, have no idea how to go about and - and don't know anyone into it.

I know I'm being vague - but don't want someone to beat me to it ;) So - does anyone have any suggestions of where to start?????
