Can someone explain to me how Astros reliever Stanek gets credited with the win?

He came in top of the 7th (score 3-3), 2 outs, runner on 1st

He threw 5 pitches: Strike, Strike, Ball, Foul, Ground ball to short stop --> out at 2nd

That was it. He threw the eq. fewest number of pitches in the game and got one guy out
It seems like a bit of a stretch to say he was the pitcher who won Houston the game.

Of course not. But he’s hardly been getting on base and was walked a couple of times tonight. Compared to the rest of their offence he’s an out to try to cash in on.
I think the moment might've been too big for Sawamura. Clearly overcome by the pressure.

He was all over the shop. He landed one ball in the dirt, just short of a length. :$

We probably won't see him again this series.

Basically he came in, held the score to 3-3, Houston scored two runs (one of them before another Houston reliever came in) and Stanek gets the win. Houston’s starter also pitched fewer than 5 innings, so he didn’t qualify for the win.

So there is no subjectivity involved? They just work backwards off the scorecard and see which pitcher was in the game when the match-winning lead was taken?

If so, it's a bit of a misleading pointless stat, especially for the bullpen pitchers.

Yeah, pretty much. Came in, held the Red Sox with scores tied, Houston grab the lead and hold it to win, Stanek gets the win. It’s that simple, haha.

A reliever could do a similar job to Stanek tonight, but 10 times throughout the season and he might end up with a 10-0, 10-1 W/L record. But one of the starting pitchers might bust his arse thought the season and pitch really well for 6 or 7 innings every game, but only end up with a 9-12 record because his team trailed 1-2 in most games he played.

There can be subjectivity to which reliever gets the win but 99% of the time it's the one who pitches last before the offence took the lead.

Starting pitchers can't get the the win if the pitch less than 5 innings

Yep, as dumb as it sounds, when looking at pitcher statistics, wins arent the most important stat in a pitchers record.

Shelby Miller for the braves in 2015 was a prime example. ERA of 3.02 and a 6-17 record. Never got any run support

Jacob degrom is a perfect example of a pitcher who doesn't get enough wins for his ERA die to lack of run support.

But am I wrong in saying the Cy Young candidates are often the pitchers with 20 wins and not the guys with the best ERA ?

Or maybe that has changed a bit over the years (since Moneyball and the increased focus on meaningful stats)
