Oakland Athletics sign free agent utility Aledmys Diaz to a two-year, $14 million contract (the link below says it's $14.5 million, but elsewhere it's been reported as a $14 million value), but only after Diaz rejected a seven year, $100 million contract from the Padres (the last part might be made up).

The Padres have had success adding at least one outfielder to their team, signing outfielder David Dahl to a minor league deal (no confirmation on whether it comes with an invitation to Spring Training, but one would imagine that it would).

The trade market for catchers cooled somewhat as the Cardinals agreed terms with free agent catcher Willson Contreras on a five year, $87.5 million contract. Barring injury, Contreras will be the first catcher to start a game on opening day not named Yadier Molina since Mike Matheny started for the Cardinals on opening day in 2004 (a 8-6 loss to the Brewers). Molina had made 18 consecutive opening day starts at catcher for the Cardinals. The deal given to Contreras by the Cardinals includes the largest guarantee for a free agent who had not previously played for the team. The Cardinals will surrender a draft choice (namely, their second-highest pick in the 2023 draft as well as $500,000 in international signing bonus space), as Contreras declined a qualifying offer from the Cubs at the start of the off-season.

According to sources close to the Yankees, their offer was eight years, $320 million. The Yankees believed the Padres had put a $400 million offer on the table for Judge, and that the Giants would match it. Hal Steinbrenner called Judge and asked him if he wanted to be a Yankee. Judge confirmed that he wished to be a Yankee, but wanted an extra year added to his deal, to which the Yankees agreed.

In addition to being paid a small fortune, Judge will now officially be named a captain of the Yankees for the next nine years, and will wear a 'C' on his jersey.

The Red Sox are in agreement with former Dodgers and Braves closer, Kenley Jansen, on a two year, $32 million contract, according to Jeff Passan.

The Mets have swung a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, acquiring Brooks Raley from the Rays in exchange for Keyshawn Askew. The Mets have also signed free agent LHP Jose Quintana to a two-year, $26 million contract (pending a successful physical).

The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired RHP Kevin Kelly from the Rockies in exchange for cash considerations. Kelly was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Rockies from the Cleveland Guardians.

Masataka Yoshida and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a five year contract for $90 million. With a posting fee of $15.4 million, the total cost of the signing comes to $105.4 million.

Over the weekend, the Diamondbacks signed RHP Austin Brice to a minor league deal, with an invitation to Spring Training. Brice was a ninth round selection for the Marlins back in 2010, and has spent parts of seven Major League Baseball seasons with four different teams. He struggled with the Marlins and was sent to the Reds as part of the Dan Strailly trade (which also sent Luis Castillo to Cincinnati). He pitched 70 innings across two seasons with the Reds before ending up on waivers and signing for a second stint with the Marlins in 2019. He pitched 44 2/3 innings in 2019 with the Marlins, and was traded to the Red Sox before the 2020 season. He struggled in Boston, pitching 33 1/3 innings across two innings for a 6.21 ERA. He played for the Pirates (mostly in Triple-A) in 2022 and making limited appearances in relief.

The Rockies are in agreement with utility player Cole Tucker on a minor league contract, with an invitation to Spring Training. He was a 2014 first round selection of the Pirates, going 24th overall out of high school. Although not particularly productive with the bat in the minors, he had some action in the big leagues for the Pirates in the last four seasons, combining for 469 plate appearances, hitting .211/.259/.314 with five home runs. He was waived by the Pirates at the start of June and played with the Diamondbacks before being waived again a month later.

Tucker's main claim to fame is that he's currently dating Vanessa Hudgens.

Bogaerts, Padres reach deal for 11 years, $280 million (source)

Not sure about giving that amount of money over that length of contract to a 30 year old. There was talk that Bogaerts would transition to third base, but the Padres already have Machado on third base, so would the Padres ask Machado to move to first (where's he played in the past) and have Bogaerts play third while Kim plays short? Presumably this also means that Tatis is going into the outfield when he comes back from suspension.

Yeah I would've given Bogaerts more salary but less years. He had a hugely high BABIP and his numbers will come down in a pitcher friendly park like Petco

Looks like Padres have money to burn, but 11 years to a guy 30 years old seems strange, 8 or 9 years would have been better, you give 11 years to guy in their mid 20's

I forgot that Machado has the right to opt out after next season, and Soto will probably leave San Diego in free agency when his contract is up, so while it looks bad, Bogaerts and the Tatis contract (which is team-friendly) are the only long term commitments the Padres have, in actuality.
