The Baltimore Orioles announced that reliever LHP Darwinzon Hernandez has cleared waivers and has been sent outright to Triple-A Norfolk. He will receive a non-roster invitation to Spring Training. The Orioles nabbed Hernandez in a trade with the Red Sox after the Red Sox designated Hernandez for assignment in January, but was then designated for assignment by the O's to make room on their roster after they traded for LHP Cole Irvin from Oakland. Hernandez has pitched in each of the last four MLB seasons with the Red Sox.

The Chicago Cubs have signed RHP Mark Leiter Jr to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training. Leiter turns 32 next month and pitched in 2022 for the Cubs, making four starts and coming out of the bullpen 31 times, for a total of 67 2/3 innings with a 3.99 ERA. Leiter Jr was bumped off the roster by the Cubs when they added Eric Hosmer. Leiter went unclaimed on waivers and was eligible to elect minor league free agency.

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced a series of non-roster Spring Training invitations, including veteran utility man Chris Owings. Owings has appeared in each of the last 10 MLB seasons, playing for the Diamondbacks, the Royals, the Red Sox, the Rockies and the Orioles during his career. He split 2022 between the Yankees and the O's, playing 27 MLB games for Baltimore, but hitting a very paltry .104/.254/.143 batting line in 68 plate appearances. Owings has played every position on the field, but has most of his experience at shortstop (though he has rated better defensively at second base, third base and in the outfield).

Luis Arraez has won his arbitration case against his new club Miami Marlins, and will take home $6.1 million in 2023 ahead of the $5 million amount offered by his former team, the Minnesota Twins. Arraez was paid $2.125 million last season.

The Seattle Mariners and utility man Dylan Moore have reached agreement on a three year extension on Moore's contract, obviating the need for the parties to arbitrate over his salary. Moore will earn $8.875 million over the course of his extension, with escalators that could increase that amount to over $9 million. The deal buys out Moore's two remaining arbitration seasons and one free agent year. Moore has spent the last four seasons with the Mariners and has played 381 games during that span, appearing at every position on the field except catcher (including one inning pitched in mop-up duty in 2019). He's been particularly effective at second base and in the outfield. Moore has hit 35 home runs in his 1073 plate appearances and has swiped 65 bases. He strikes out at 30% clip, but he also draws walks at a 10% rate and has a career batting line of .208/.317/.384, producing wRC+ of 100 (indicating that he is smack bang average as a batter).

The Los Angeles Dodgers and RHP Tony Gonsolin are in agreement on a $6.65 million, two year contract that avoided the need for the parties to go to arbitration over Gonsolin's 2023 salary. Gonsolin will be paid $3.25 million in 2023 and $3.4 million in 2024. His salary in 2024 can increase by up to $3 million in a points system in which he will be credited one point for each start, or each relief appearance of 3 1/3 innings ($500,000 apiece for 14, 16, 18, 20, 24 and 28 points). He would also receive a bonus of $1.125 million for winning a Cy Young in 2024, $625,000 for finishing second or third in the Cy Young voting, and $500,000 for finishing fourth or fifth in the Cy Young voting.

The New York Mets have announced a number of non-roster Spring Training invitations, including corner outfielder DJ Stewart, indicating that he has signed a minor league contract with the Mets. It will be the second organisation for Stewart, who was a first round selection of the Orioles back in 2015 and appeared for the Orioles in the MLB in 2018. He worked mostly as a depth in the outfield rotation, playing 100 games in five years, with no more than 44 games in any one season. Stewart has 622 career plate appearances for the Orioles, hitting 26 home runs and walking at a 13.2% rate, striking out at 26.8% of the time and hitting a career .256 BABIP. Overall, he's a .213/.327/.400 line against MLB pitching and owns a below-average rating as a defender at both left and right field. The Orioles outrighted Stewart off their 40-man roster last April and managed only 29 games at Triple-A level. He joins Tim Locastro, Abraham Almonte and Lorenzo Cedrola among non-roster outfielders who will be in the Mets' Spring Training camp.

Free agent first baseman Miguel Sano will host a showcase for interested clubs next Tuesday (Wednesday our time). Sano is looking for a new team after spending 12 years with the Twins. He turns 30 in May and has a career .234/.326/.482 slash line over parts of eight MLB campaigns. Sano is a true three-outcome hitter, walking at 11.6% of the time, striking out 36.4% of the time and averaging 34 homers per 600 plate appearances.

Former Oakland Athletics pitcher Jharel Cotton has signed a contract with the Orix Buffaloes of the NPB for the 2023 season. It will be the first overseas stint for the 31 year old, who was drafted by the Dodgers back in 2012 and then was traded to Oakland in 2016. Cotton made 29 starts in two seasons for the Athletics but didn't appear in the MLB until 2021 as a member of the Texas Rangers. Cotton spent most of 2022 with the Twins, making 25 MLB appearances and posting a strong 2.83 ERA that was mostly built on a BABIP of .183. The Twins put Cotton on waivers and he was picked up by the Giants, but after giving up seven runs in eight innings, the Giants passed him through outright waivers and he elected minor league free agency.

Jon Heyman has reported that the Pirates had offered Brian Reynolds a six year, $76 million contract, which suggests (based on earlier reports that the sides were roughly $50 million apart in negotiations) that Reynolds was after a deal that paid him at least $126 million. Reynolds is set to make $6.75 million for the 2023 season and is eligible for arbitration twice more before qualifying for free agency after the 2025 season.

The Kansas City Royals officially announced Greinke's new deal today. He will earn $8.5 million in guaranteed money, with up to $7.5 million available in incentives.

To make room on the roster for Greinke, the Royals announced that LHP Anthony Misiewicz has been designated for assignment. The Royals acquired Misiewicz from the Mariners at the trade deadline in August, after he had been designated for assignment by Seattle.

LHP Jesus Luzardo won his arbitration hearing against the Marlins, meaning that Luzaro will earn $2.45 million in 2023, as opposed to the submitted salary from the Marlins of $2.1 million. Luzardo becomes the second Marlin to win his arbitration case against the Marlins, after Luis Arraez won his arbitration case last week. Jon Berti is also scheduled for an arbitration hearing, unless the two sides come to agreement on a contract beforehand.

Luzardo was one of the better prospects in the Athletics' farm season but was traded to Miami in exchange for Starling Marte at the 2021 deadline after Luzardo struggled at both MLB and Triple-A level for the A's in 2021. In his first full season with the Marlins, Luzardo pitched to a 3.32 ERA including a 30% strikeout rate over 100 1/3 innings. There was some suggestion that Luzaro could be up for trade by the Marlins, but it's less likely that he will be moved after the Marlins traded Pablo Lopez to the Twins in exchange for Luis Arraez.

San Diego Padres prospect Eguy Rosario suffered a broken ankle during winter ball workouts and is expected to not be back playing baseball until "midsummer". Rosario made his MLB debut for the Padres last season with seven games (including six plate appearances), and he was expected to be in contention for a backup infield role this spring. He has played at shortstop, second base and third base during his minor league career, and also has some games at first base.

The Texas Rangers have signed LHP Bernardo Flores Jr to a minor league deal, according to Flores Jr's Mexican club and the player himself. Flores was released by the Rockies last spring and signed a minor league contract with the Reds, before being released again after he posted 7.13 ERA in 17 2/3 innings with the Reds' Triple-A team. He joined the Diablos Rojos del Mexico and managed 4.15 ERA in 26 innings for the Mexican League team.

The Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox are in agreement on a trade that will send RHP Franklin German to the White Sox in exchange for RHP Theo Denlinger. The White Sox announced that they have designated RHP Jason Bilous for assignment to create roster space. Boston designated German for assignment last week after he managed 2.72 ERA over 49 2/3 innings between Boston's Double-A and Triple-A affiliates (all in relief). He did manage to get into the big leagues, but managed just 18.00 ERA in four innings.

Denlinger began his pro-ball career in 2021 after the White Sox drafted him in the seventh round of that year's draft. He made it to Double-A in the White Sox organisation and was added to the White Sox 40 man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed utility man Yairo Munoz to a minor league deal, as he has received an invitation to Spring Training. He elected free agency after being outrighted off the Phillies' 40 man roster after the season ended. Munoz signed a minor league deal with the Phillies last winter and managed 29 games, hitting .211/.250/.404 with three home runs in 60 plate appearances.

Fangraphs article talking about Texas

”With that said, the Rangers as currently constructed have a lot of question marks. Their best chances of making the playoffs involve either: 1. a merger with the Cubs, who have tons of depth but little star power and therefore represent a perfect complement to Texas’ roster”

And that’s enough Internet for today. :(

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement with infielder Miguel Rojas on a contract extension that will keep Rojas in Los Angeles until at least the end of 2024. Rojas was sent to earn $5 million in 2023, but he will now receive that via a $3.5 million base salary and a $1.5 million signing bonus. Rojas will then earn $5 million in 2024, and the Dodgers hold a club option on Rojas for 2025 worth $5 million, with a $1 million buyout. This deal replaces the two year, $10 million contract that Rojas signed when he was with the Marlins that covered the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The Boston Red Sox have signed RHP Jake Faria to a minor league deal including an invitation to Spring Training. The deal guarantees a salary of $735,000 to Faria if he makes the active roster. Since the start of the 2019 season, Faria has pitched a total of 51 1/3 innings in the MLB, with most of those coming with the Diamondbacks in 2021. Faria was in the Twins organisation in 2022 but never made it beyond Triple-A.

The Giants officially announced their signing of catcher Roberto Perez on a minor league deal. Perez will earn $2.5 million if he makes the big league roster, with another $1.5 million available in incentives. Perez will compete with Austin Wynns and Blake Sabol to earn the right to back up starting catcher Joey Bart.

The Washington Nationals have announced that RHP Chad Kuhl has been signed to a minor league contract, with an invitation to Spring Training. Kuhl was with the Rockies in 2022, having previously pitched for the Pirates.

Unfortunate news for Mets pitching prospect Matt Allan, who underwent UCL revision surgery in January, having undergone Tommy John surgery at the start of the 2021 season. Given the relatively long recovery time for UCL revision surgery, it's likely that he will miss the entire 2023 campaign and some of the 2024 campaign, which means that he will not have pitched since 2019 by the time he is healthy again.

The Atlanta Braves have won their arbitration hearing against LHP Max Fried. Fried will be paid $13.5 million in salary for 2023, rather than the $15 million salary he had sought when the parties exchanged numbers. Fried managed 2.48 ERA in 185 1/3 innings for the Braves last season, including a 23.2% strikeout rate and a 4.4% walk rate. Fried finished runner-up in the NL Cy Young behind Sandy Alcantara. This marks the second straight year that Fried and the Braves have had an arbitration hearing to determine his salary for the forthcoming season, and puts the ledger at one win apiece (Fried won his arbitration case last year, winning a salary of $6.85 million against the Braves' offer of $6.6 million). This coming season is Fried's penultimate year of club control and he will go through arbitration one more time before hitting free agency after the 2024 season, unless the Braves and Fried agree on a long-term extension.
