Hi Folks,
Was at a sportsman's night over here for 1 of the WAFL clubs and Mick Malthouse was the guest speaker. As usual it was a pretty light sort of night (Scott Cummings hosting) but I know I am always interested in some of the things that get said about my club by it's key people so I thought I'd drop a few of the tidbits that came out last night from Mick.
If you've heard it all before or it's not interesting, my apologies, but I guess it's really Mick's fault if that's the case.
Mick's comments on;
Pre-Game.
Found it hard to get used to guys having fun pre-game. Got used to it eventually, saw that it had no impact on the performances of some guys.
Pies are studying all individuals pre-games routines and looking at keeping the super serious away from the light hearted pre-game (makes sense)
Lockyer the most intense pre-game at the club at the moment.
MM & Thomas are co-dependent pre-game. Thomes HAS to have a kick around with MM in the rooms (tick kicks, normal kicks etc). MM has recently realised he now needs that as much as Thomas.
MM Hates
Coaches who have 5yr plans to turn clubs around. Believes that it is a coaching cop out and can be done much more quickly. Used himself as an example at CFC, WCE & Footscray as to how it can be done quickly. Mentioned Freo as another example.
Hands in the back rule - should be a free only if the hand pushes, not touches, the other player.
Media (big surprise) - has some special dislike for Kelly Underwood based on his comments.
People making the same mistakes more than once.
Kevin Sheedy (although not as much as his Mum does according to a funny story told by Scott Cummings)
Buckley/MM Coaching Arrangement.
Was initially upset at the proposal, but his wife was even more angry.
After he calmed down he realised that the offer was giving him the chance to have over 40yrs in the game as a player & coach plus the chance to spend more time with his Grandkids. The final point sold him on it.
He's not completely sure that he'll be going past this year (throw away line that I don't really believe)
If you guys win 2 flags in a row it won't change his mind.
Believes he's giving Buckley a great list of kids and that Buckley will have no excuses, nor will he need any.
General
Believes he is responsible for the implementation of midfield rotations and he started the trend in, I think he said 2007. It was the year you lost the Prelim to GFC by a few points with what he called a "young and pretty ordinary side".
Tells his players that they should not count their games but make their games count.
Believes the game is being interfered with too much.
Believes the capping of rotations is ill-advised, will lead to injuries but is a certainty to come in because AA has made up his mind (says he likes AA a lot but thinks this is wrong).
Hope this was interesting to some.
Good luck tonight guys.
