Hi Folks,

Was at a sportsman's night over here for 1 of the WAFL clubs and Mick Malthouse was the guest speaker. As usual it was a pretty light sort of night (Scott Cummings hosting) but I know I am always interested in some of the things that get said about my club by it's key people so I thought I'd drop a few of the tidbits that came out last night from Mick.

If you've heard it all before or it's not interesting, my apologies, but I guess it's really Mick's fault if that's the case. ;)

Mick's comments on;

Pre-Game.
Found it hard to get used to guys having fun pre-game. Got used to it eventually, saw that it had no impact on the performances of some guys.

Pies are studying all individuals pre-games routines and looking at keeping the super serious away from the light hearted pre-game (makes sense)

Lockyer the most intense pre-game at the club at the moment.

MM & Thomas are co-dependent pre-game. Thomes HAS to have a kick around with MM in the rooms (tick kicks, normal kicks etc). MM has recently realised he now needs that as much as Thomas.

MM Hates
Coaches who have 5yr plans to turn clubs around. Believes that it is a coaching cop out and can be done much more quickly. Used himself as an example at CFC, WCE & Footscray as to how it can be done quickly. Mentioned Freo as another example.

Hands in the back rule - should be a free only if the hand pushes, not touches, the other player.

Media (big surprise) - has some special dislike for Kelly Underwood based on his comments.

People making the same mistakes more than once.

Kevin Sheedy (although not as much as his Mum does according to a funny story told by Scott Cummings)

Buckley/MM Coaching Arrangement.
Was initially upset at the proposal, but his wife was even more angry.

After he calmed down he realised that the offer was giving him the chance to have over 40yrs in the game as a player & coach plus the chance to spend more time with his Grandkids. The final point sold him on it.

He's not completely sure that he'll be going past this year (throw away line that I don't really believe)

If you guys win 2 flags in a row it won't change his mind.

Believes he's giving Buckley a great list of kids and that Buckley will have no excuses, nor will he need any.

General
Believes he is responsible for the implementation of midfield rotations and he started the trend in, I think he said 2007. It was the year you lost the Prelim to GFC by a few points with what he called a "young and pretty ordinary side".

Tells his players that they should not count their games but make their games count.

Believes the game is being interfered with too much.

Believes the capping of rotations is ill-advised, will lead to injuries but is a certainty to come in because AA has made up his mind (says he likes AA a lot but thinks this is wrong).

Hope this was interesting to some.

Good luck tonight guys.

Thanks for taking the time to post that. :thumbsu:

A few surprises there (e.g. Sheedy) and some disappointing comments (e.g. liking AA)

Thanks for coming in and posting that. Interesting stuff.

Thomas seems to be a bit superstitious. Doesn't he have some ritual with Harry O'Brien as they run out onto the field as well?

Well done Docker Doph

thanks for making such an effort on our team site in very good spirit

Good luck as well to you tonight.

Lets hope its a high standard game no matter who finishes on top.

cheers

I would've thought when he calmed down about the arrangement he might've realised that he's going on being the coach who has gone longest at a single club without a flag and realised that getting an extension under those circumstances was extremely generous as it was, oh well.

Good stuff, cheers mate.

Agree wholeheartedly with him on the hands in the back, continues to drive me insane, seems to just be a forgotten issue now though (i.e. nobody kicks a fuss up about it).
There is a clear difference between pushing someone in the back and simply putting your hands there.

Again thanks for taking the effort of posting that info it's much appreciated :thumbsu:

I totally agree with his concerns about the interchange rotations and also the hard line interpretation of the hands in the back rule. I think these sort of rules should be judged on merit.

I also found his comment on making the same mistake twice interesting. It's probably as good an explanation for why some players seem to get frozen out of the side as any (eg guys like Stanley).

I'm also surprised that he doesn't seem to like Sheedy and thought our 07 team was 'ordinary'.

Both are superstitious, but I'm pretty sure Harry has to run behind Thomas and touch his jumper a few times - watch the race tonight.

I share Mick's peeves to the letter. Hands in the back and rotations. Sheedy never tips the Pies unless it's a total lock.

Very much appreciate for the post. :thumbsu: And good luck for tonight. One of my brothers lives in WA in a split house of mad Freo and Collingwood fans. It aint going to be pretty in his house either way. :p

GO PIES!!

Thanks for the thanks folks, was my pleasure.

Should clarify 1 thing regarding the Sheedy thing in case Halfwit Hutchy reads this and tries to make a story ;)

He didn't say that out loud. Cummings asked him as part of the interview what made him laugh, what made him tick etc and then asked "What do you really hate".

It was then Cummings that added "I know Kevin Sheedy is one" at which Malthouse just smiled and nodded.

Cummings then told a story about the Ballarat Hall of Fame dinner where Sheedy came up to Mick's Mum "all cocky and confident" and said "How about a photo Sweetheart" at which Mrs Malthouse apparently said "Not with you d&&khead".

Mick doesn't reckon she would've called him a DH but didn't dispute anything else.

1 other point I forgot to mention which interested me a bit was that MM's father got very sick and was paralysed when he was about 12. He lived up until only a few years ago but MM mentioned that this was difficult and said it may be a reason why he has never been too open or trusting.

Didn't expand beyond that but it was an interesting moment for people watchers like myself.

PieLebo87 I may have the year wrong but it was certainly the words he used to describe the team in question.

I will now get off your lawn before I get shot :D

We were an ordinary side in '07??
Too a lot in 2007 we were nothing more then a good ordinary side punching above their weight

Haha, damn.

I'm impressed with anyone who can give a summary of what Michael Malthouse is talking about. As he's got older, his brain wanders around as he talks and he sounds like the first stage of senility has set in.

I agree with the comment that Malthouse has to be a realist about coaching any longer than 2 more years. He has done a great job over the journey - including a great job in the first 5 years when he wasn't given much support by the recruiting department. Now the recruiters are naming gems like steele and dane, Mick has something to work with.

I told my Richmond mate that the Tigers would be crazy not to recruit Mick in 2013. He knows how to get a football club operating properly.

I'd say the only time you ever hear Malthouse speak is at post match pressers.
He was on Sen a few weeks back and was extremely coherent and interesting to listen to.
The ONLY time he seems to ramble incoherently is at post match pressers...and I don't think it is accidental.

well i had the same thought...that he has a strategy of rambling.... when he was with the Beagles he used to abuse the Perth journos which he cant do now..

but I've seen him talking about Anzacs and other things. I've seen him interviewed by light entertainment stuff like "before the game" and he still seems to waffle...

I still think its old age...

I heard him a week or two ago on SEN on a Friday night before the game and he was having a very interesting discussion about how the role of a coach has changed over the years, and about how the media are often ill-informed on the teams they write about. (Not that that is news to any of us).:p

Anyway, my point is that some of his insights into the world of football are fascinating, and Dermie and Huddo actually held off an ad break or two that night just to ask him more questions.

Thanks for posting that summary Docker Dolph.
