I have had a few requests so here goes:

Pick: 1 Club: Carlton Player: Daniel Wells
Description: 180cm, Midfielder,Forward
Lightning quick and dangerous near goals, Wells gives the Blues
a real player of the future.

The Skinny: The Blues hope he is the next Scott Camporeale ?

Pick: 2 Club: Carlton Player: Brendan Goddard
Description: 189cm Utility
Excellent player who can play in a variety of positions. He has endurance, speed and ball getting skills which are his main attributes.

The Skinny: Quality selection.

Pick: 3 Club: Saints Player: Steven Salopek
Description: 185cm, Midfielder, Utility.
The Saints have no hesitation in selecting the confident Salopek
and see him as a player that makes others look and play better.

The Skinny: A tough on baller. With Luke Ball available, the Saints have two quality young midfielders to compliment their talls

Pick: 4 Club: North Player: Blake Grima
Description: 179cm Midfielder, Forward.
North were very keen to land this talented on baller who has terrific endurance. With so many early selections the Roos are keen to land quality players.

The Skinny: The Roos hope he has a better attitiude and work ethic than Harris and Smith which he will definitely demonstrate.

Pick: 5 Club: Brisbane Player: Jay Schulz
Description: 192cm Forward
Brisbane will give Schulz plenty of time to develop into a replacement for Lynch

The Skinny : Can Shulz regain his form and confidence and live up to his undoubted talent ?

Pick: 6 Club: Bulldogs Player: Stephen Gilham
Description: 192cm, Defender.
The Dogs like this well credentialed defender and see him as a player of the future.
He needs to add a lot of weight but has the footy nous and ability to play at the senior level. Loves to run off his opponents.

The Skinny: Will he be the next Jason Saddington or the next Nigel Credlin ?

Pick: 7 Club: Swans Player: Jared McVeigh
Description: 181cm, Midfielder:
Impressed all at the Draft Camp and has speed and endurance to burn, the Swans are rapt to get a local Central Coast boy on their list.

The Skinny: Has played little football so is somewhat of a gamble for such an early selection

Pick: 8 Club: Port Player: Nick Smith
Description: 195cm, Defender/Forward
With Port losing Mead, Brooks and French they cannot afford to pass on such a good tall prospect. Smith could play senior football with them in 2003

The Skinny: Improving all the time and can play in the Ruck.

Pick:9 Club: Geelong Player: Byron Schammer
Description: 175cm, Midfielder.
The Cats love his pace and evasive skills and even though they need talls select the West Adelaide standout.

The Skinny: Too good of a prospect for the Cats to pass up on.

Pick: 10 Club: Hawks Player: Jared Brennen
Description: 191cm, Defender/Forward.
A great athlete who can play in a number of positions. The Hawks will take their time with this young talent.

The Skinny: Will Brennen make Hawks fans forget about McPharlin ?

Pick: 11 Club: Kangaroos Player: Tim Walsh
Description: 194cm, Forward.
The Roos make another good selection by drafting Walsh who will be a key forward of the future.

The Skinny: Strong mark but needs to build himself up.

Pick: 12 Club: Essendon Player: Hamish McIntosh
Description: 201cm Ruck/Forward.
The Bombers are sick of searching for rucks via trades and have drafted McIntosh because he was the best big man available

The Skinny: Good mark and kick but will need time. Needs a lot of work on his rucking craft. Barnsey will love working with him.

Pick: 13 Club: Essendon Player: Anthony Corrie.
Description: 186cm, Defender.
No better club for this talented Nothern Territory player to selected by.Good evasive skills and pace

The Skinny: Is he the next Michael Long ? A surprise selection.

Pick: 14 Club: Richmond Player: Jason Winderlich
Description: 184cm, Midfielder.
After recruiting Kane Johnson the Tigers are very keen to add the pacy Winderlich to their midfield options. Their midfield weakness last season is now nearly a strength for the club.

The Skinny: Good mark for his size and a solid selection.

Pick: 15 Club: Freo Player: Daniel Bell
Description: 187cm, Defender/Midfielder.
Freo add a good and tough player to their midfield group which is the area that they needed to target.

The Skinny: Has impressed all talent scouts with his dedicated approach.

Pick: 16 Club: Melbourne Player: Brent Staker
Description: 193cm, Defender.
The Dees need plenty of height in defence and Staker will be given time to develop.

The Skinny: Strong mark and a great work ethic. Can he get better at the next level ?

Pick:17 Club: Melbourne Player: Paul Johnson
Description: 197cm, Ruck/Forward.
The Dees are surprised that Johnson is still available and have no hesitation in selecting this strong forward.

The Skinny: Is he the next Luke Darcy or the next Brett O’Farrell ?
Very strong for his age. Melbourne have two young talls with their selections so far.

End of first round.

Pick: 18 Club: Port Player: David Kellet
Description: 179cm, Midfielder.
Port love his work ethic and ball getting skills

The Skinny: Good kick but a touch slow. His lack of pace is the only question mark on him. Port have grabbed two local players with their selectiosn so far.

Pick: 19 Club: Bulldogs Player: Callum Urch
Description: 182cm, Defender/Midfielder
The Bulldogs have a dilemma, they need height but the lure of the local boy is too strong. Urch has pace, skills and terrific endurance and the Dogs know he is good enough to play senior football in 2003.

The Skinny: The Dogs hope he is a smaller version of Sam Power, Did someone say Luke Power ? Urch will be a very popular player with the Bulldog fans.

Pick: 20 Club: Kangaroos Player: Jason Layco(k
Description: 197cm Ruck/Forward.
The Roos are having a good day and see Layco(k as a key forward option. Was one of the standout players for the now defunct Tassie Mariners

The Skinny: Strong mark and is mobile and will make the most of this opportunity.

Pick: 21 Club: Brisbane Player: Tom Lonergan
Description: 194cm, Forward.
Lonergan will be given plenty of time to develop by the patient Lions who see him as another option to replace Lynch. Lonergan has a good work ethic and is a long kick.

The Skinny: Strong mark for someone who is so skinny. A work in progress for the Lions.

Pick: 22 Club: Bulldogs Player: Bo Nixon
Description: 190cm, Utility
Arguably the most versatile player in the draft. The Bulldogs see him as a tall midfielder and as a key position player of the future. Very strong at the ball and generally tough in a contest.

The Skinny: Have the Dogs found a taller more skilful version of Mitch Hahn ? Nixon will quickly become a fan favourite at the Kennel and will play senior football in 2003.

Pick: 23 Club: Collingwood Player: Kade Simpson
Description: 181cm, Midfielder.
Great skills and a beautiful left foot kick, the Pies have selected a player of the future.

The Skinny: Will need plenty of time to build himself up.

Pick: 24 Club: StKilda Player: Luke Brennan
Description: 188cm, Defender/Forward
The Saints look to their old stomping ground of Ballarat and secure the athletic and strong marking Brennan. Intelligent player.

The Skinny: Is he too small to be a KPP ? Can he actually improve at the next level ?

Pick: 25 Club: Geelong Player: Jason Roe
Description: 191cm, Defender.
Talented and a strong mark, the Cats will be patient with this gifted Aboriginal player from the NT.

The Skinny: Will need plenty of time to fill out but is an exciting prospect.

Pick: 26 Club: West Coast Player: Courtney Johns
Description: 192cm Forward.
With the Eagles likely to lose, McIntosh, Jakovich and Wilson in the coming year they need to recruit tall timber and in Johns have the best local talent available.

The Skinny: Solid skill levels for a key forward.

Pick: 27 Club: Kangaroos Player: Luke Jericho
Description: 190cm, Utility.
Jericho is a great athlete and appeals to the Roos because of his versatility.

The Skinny: Excellent pace for someone so tall. The Roos are making the most of their selections and cant stop smiling.

Pick: 28 Club: Melbourne Player: Troy Selwood
Description: 187cm Defender.
Terrific endurance and work ethic and will settle in well for the Dees.

The Skinny: Needs to build himself up but is a solid selection for the Dees.

Pick: 29 Club: Essendon Player: Wade Champion
Description: 191cm, Forward.
The Dons love tall players and Champion is a good key forward prospect.

The Skinny: Strong mark.

Pick: 30 Club: Essendon Player: Ryan Crowley
Description: 188cm, Utility.
Good skills and is both a long accurate kick and decent overhead.

The Skinny: A bit of a surprise, but is highly regarded. Can play in a variety of positions

Pick: 31 Club: Carlton Player: Matthew Ferguson
Description: 186cm, Forward.
The Blues need more tall players but Ferguson is a good pick and really presents himself in a contest.

The Skinny: The Blues are surprised he has lasted this long.

Pick: 32 Club: Collingwood Player: Leigh Treeby
Description: 181cm, Midfielder.
The Pies are loaded up forward and go for the best midfielder available and they really like Treeby’s work ethic.

The Skinny: His performance in the TAC GF impressed all

Pick: 33 Club: Brisbane Player: Michael Stinear
Description: 180cm, Midfielder
Very athletic and a strong mark for his size. Stinear’s work in close is a real strength.

The Skinny: A long term prospect and surprise selection.

End of second round.

The Bulldogs drafted the following players with their remaining picks.

Pick: 37 Club: Bulldogs Player: Ryan Brown
Description: 192cm, Defender/Forward.
The Dogs have gone for the best KPP still available. Brown is very strong in a contest and is a good mark. Can play in several positions and is capable of playing senior football next season

The Skinny: Brown could be anything and does not shirk a contest.

Pick: 39 Club: Bulldogs Player: Lucas McGhie
Description: 191cm Utility.
Richmonds loss is the Doggies gain and the versatile McGhie will be given plenty of time to develop into a KPP of the future.

The Skinny: Will passing on McGhie hurt the Tigers like Cloke did ?

Pick: 53 Club: Bulldogs Player: Luke Shackleton
Description: 177cm Midfielder.
Strong player in the one on one contests and has decent pace.
The TAC Morrish Medal winner loves to tackle bigger players and has a very disciplined approach to his footy. Coaches love players like Shackleton. Skill level needs a little work.

The Skinny: The Dogs hope his work ethic will remind the Bulldog faithful of Libba. He could play senior football for the club in 2003.

Overall:
A few speculative selections and one or two players are very unlucky to be overlooked during the first two rounds.

The Dogs have added a couple of key position types and will probably grab the 192cm very athletic Dale Carson on the Rookie list.

Should that be Jarrad McVeigh?

You don't think Adam Fisher is top 30 material? Can I ask how come?

Thanks Old School
Cross referenced your analysis with the Inside Footy and you are pretty well spot on.
With Scott Clayton proven he can select quality players after pick 30 it would be great to grab Urch with 19, and grab a couple of talls with 22 and 39. I hear he has a surprise for us late. Hopefully another Ryan Hargrave or Kieran McGuiness.

I have noticed a lot of supporters of other clubs have written us off in 2003 because of Penny and Hunter leaving. Neither of these guys played in round 22 and the team looked balanced but Collingwood were missing Rocca.

Porthos
Anthony Rock, his coach at the Rebels, says it is touch and go whether he is drafted. One of the reasons given is lack of pace.

No James Allan or Luke Mullins?

Paul Johnson will go earlier I reckon simply because there are not enough big men around.

Grima at 4 is interesting - do you think the shoulder reco will affect his position at all?

I'd love to pick up Brennan at 10, but I'd be quite happy with McIntosh as well.

Nixon would be the steal of the draft if you got him in the 20's - I've seen him play forward, wing, HBF and full back and do well at all of them.

Allan is a great little player but his size might work against him and Mullins will get selected.

Johnson could go early but I rate him as a risk. Some clubs enjoy taking a risk so you never know.

Grima is a fantastic player week after week and is just outside of the best three as far as I am concerned. I doubt the shoulder will work against him or Salopek because of the success of Judd this season.

I thought the Hawk fans would love Brennen and assumed if available he would be a good fit for them.

I agree that Nixon could go early because of his work ethic and endeavor and the Dogs would be crazy to overlook him at pick 22.

Cheers

If Brent Staker was still available at 19, would we grab him?
Tough question.
We need tall defenders and forwards and there is a good chance that Staker will still be available for the selection so I suppose he would be a decent consideration.
I am not sure that Staker would be a Scott Clayton's type of guy because he is not the real athletic type that Clayton likes.
Melbourne appear to be desperate for tall defenders given all the injuries they had last season so I thought he might be a reasonable selection for them.
I would not be unhappy with him but more for pick 22

Thanks for that.
2 key defenders and Callum Urch with our first 3 picks would be a great result.

PS I get the feeling when I talk to people at the club about Scott Clayton that he would not have picked Luke Penny if he was Recruiting Manager at the time.

Clayton appears to like players that are athletically gifted and they must have a very good upside. Players that are already good but might not get a lot better seem to be overlooked by him.
Penny was a decent selection and there was not many tall players taken after him to make the selection look poor.
I'm sure Clayton would not have wanted to take Winmar with his next selection that season.

Clayton is an astute selector, one of the best in the business

Grima is a very good talent and whilst he may not go that high come draft day, he has the capacity to become an even better footballer. Tremendous upside in my opinion. Long kick and no real weakness. Missed the TAC GF due to popping his shoulder and that might hurt come draft day although with Judd's success this season it should not really be too much of a consideration if he is given the OK

My information on both Harris and Smith is that they are slack both on and off the training track and have allowed their limited success to go to their heads.

Would love to get all the guys you have metioned. Especially the local guys Urch and McGhie. Guys like that are important to a footy club. Their value goes far beyond their playing skills(although they have to be able to play)

Hmm interesting.. coz from other people I have heard that the young guys at the club (have particularily heard Harris's name) didnt like Pagan much because (this is in Harris's case) he rode them very hard and didnt really know them very well and ignored them.. which could explain some of this slacking off..

Thanks for hte info on Grima btw.. love it!:D:D Do you think he will grow?

I agree that getting local players when they have the talent is the right way to go. Those players also seem to sign contracts quicker and really want to be a one team player throughout their career.
