Seems there is a bit of confusion about what is acceptable on this board lately with a large number of posts being deleted, posters claiming that they have been infracted unfairly, and the board rules being updated. Could this be a good time to hold an election so Freo posters themselves get to have a say in how their board is run and who runs it?

I'm not having a go at you guys Ripper and Sabre, in fact I'm sure everyone is thankful of the time and effort you guys put in, but I'm just pondering that (should you be willing to toss your names back in the ring) it may be a good time to let the board re-affirm their choice of moderator/moderators, or choose new ones, so that their is less reason for them to be critical of the moderation in the future.

My idea is that we use this thread (should Ripper and Sabre agree to put their hats in the ring) to nominate who they wish to moderate. If a poster is nominated and seconded (nominations will close next Sunday 21st Oct) then they can accept nomination and a new thread will be created for voting in the following week (it will be open for one week). Whoever polls the most votes will have the option of being the sole moderator, or accepting the second highest poller as a co-moderator. The moderation voting will be in the form of a public thread/poll to ensure it is all above board and transparent.

If you guys, Ripper and Sabre, are willing to give this a go, then we can start nominations as soon as you indicate the go ahead.

(I will update this thread to include nominations, and much to dissappointment of some, I will consider myself ineligible to be nominated. )

In my opinion this is a disappointing thread, and arguably the most divisive thread I have seen since I began visiting the Bigfooty site.

I think if we look behind the polite language in Roundhouse's post, his agenda is pretty clear: He wants to elect a moderator because he is unhappy with the job that Ripper and Sabre are doing. Put simply, he wants to elect a Moderator that will start a crusade against Belnakor and myself (and probably a few other posters that he does not like).

Firstly, I think Roundhouse is under a misconception that Sabre and Ripper "go easy" on me. I suspect that my posts are quite closely scrutinized by the moderators. Since my join date I have probably received more cards compared to any other “regular” poster on the Freo board (some justified, and others unjustified). Secondly, I think that “moderator elections” will inevitably lead to different factions competing to get their candidate elected as moderator. The moderator that was elected would be partisan and this will lead to one particular clique dominating the board. Thirdly, I think the inevitable “electioneering” would be an unnecessary distraction from the main purpose of the board – to discuss FFC.

Sabre and Ripper have said that there will be no moderator elections – this is an entirely sensible decision. As pointed out by Memories on the first page, having a popularly elected moderator would not result in a better moderator - in fact probably the exact opposite. Moderators require security of tenure if they are going to apply the board rules fairly to all posters. A fair application of the rules means that inevitably some decisions will be popular with some posters and unpopular with other posters.

Can you imagine the debarkle we would have if High Court Judges were directly elected by democratic vote? The Judge would be more concerned with public opinion than interpreting and applying the law. Likewise a directly elected moderator would cause a similar raft of problems – the moderator would be afraid of to make a decision in case it annoyed some of the “main players” on the board.

In my personal opinion, the creation of this thread is one of the clearest acts of ungratefulness I have ever seen. Both moderators donate their time to this board for free. If you look behind the polite language of Roundhouse's post I think its pretty clear (in my opinion) that he does not appreciate that.

See above. The reason for suggesting elections was in part a response to posters claiming that they have been treated unfairly by the current moderation. You seem to be doing exactly that....

An election would have given you a chance to express, in a meaningful way, your dissatisfaction with the persecution you are claiming to be recieving from the current moderators.

As you pointed out, there will be no election. Whether you continue to claim that you are persecuted is up to you, but it seems the majority have spoken in favour of the current moderators. You will need to accept their decisions in future, or express your dissatisfaction through the appropriate channels. I don't think the rest of the board needs to be subjected to your claims of unfair treatment any more.

It was directed at Gunnar Longshanks and I labelled him as a pretentious twit.

There was no debate and no slanging match before or after.

Good luck in getting him to do that. I think the reason for this thread is due to him having a post removed or his advice about you and belkanor not being followed. I have asked him numerous times to actually _read_ my posts and he refuses, for whatever reason. I'm not sure what can be done about such people, it is a bad situation.

I hope that saber and ripper stay on, just because they have shown they can deal with most situations, unlike a lot of people.

You, on the other hand, in your reply to the opening post, implored posters to look beyond the actual words I had written in order to find a meaning opposite to what I had actually expressed.

I find your hypocrisy disconcerting. On the one hand you are claiming that you support the moderation here, yet on the other, you are claiming that some of the red cards you have received have been "unjustified". This hypocrisy is clear to see for all those who read this forum. I won't try to persuade them as to your motives, as I'm sure they will make up their own minds.

I have never received a red card, and have never publicly complained about any infraction recieved. I stated my reasons for suggesting an election very clearly, and none of those reasons included wanting to oust the current moderators.

I thought that that an all-inlcusive and open election would actually really appeal to majority of posters of this board who subscribe to the ideal that everyone should be included and allowed to have their say.

No what you mostly do is look for any context you can take out of order to try and confuse the initial points they are making. It forces people to repost the same stuff in a different way until it's so clear it's like plastic wrap, at which point you stop posting. It's annoying and a little bit of reading comprehension from a "non angry" position will help you see this. You need to read a whole post and get the general points they are making, not just take a sentence or two out and then act like the rest of the post is irrelevant.

It's pretty clear to ME what he is saying, even though he thinks he has been over moderated in the past he thinks generally what they do is good. When he has the choice of _THEM_ who mostly let him have his opinions, or _YOU_ (or someone who is similar to you) who wants him banned for having his opinions, who do you think he will choose?

So just to make your intentions clear, you did not receive an infraction or have a post removed in the previous 48 hours of starting this thread? Because this thread reeks of someone being upset about being moderated. If I'm wrong, and you just came out of nowhere with this thread, then hey, I'm sorry for implying it.
