What about Snowden or Manning ?

they're classic examples of how irational the times we're in are and iconic because they represent the beginning of end times.

Manning released evidence of war crimes and gets locked up indefinitely, but those clearly committing the murder get away scott free.

Snowden, once upon a time Russians would defect to America and release information on communists atrocities and such, now its the other way around.

Barack Obama will be an icon of the West as soon as he leaves the presidency. Will have stopped two wars, introduced the most meaningful social welfare reforms in a generation and dragged the US economy from the brink of Depression when he came in, to an energy independent and growing economy when he leaves. And as the first black president. Also, has managed to avoid the kind of major scandal that has bedevilled most modern US presidents.

In other parts of the world, I would have said Sheik Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah (was hugely admired across the Islamic world for standing up to Israel) but letting Hezbollah take sides in the sectarian Syria fight has ruined that.

Hugo Chavez is an icon. Inspired an entire generation of Latin American lefties and as result, that continent has finally broken free of the US "Monroe Doctrine" domination. The effects of this are just being played out but are already fascinating - from Ecuador siding with Assange, the Brazilians exerting economic independence to little Uruguay legalising weed. None of this would have happened before Chavez.

Would have said Obama as well.

History will look back on the likes of Gates, Zuckerberg and Jobs as icons as well, whether they were or not.

Sporting wise we have had a hell of a run, Federer, Schumacher, Slater, Vettel, Brady, Manning, Woods, Craig Alexander, Jordan, LeBron, Bryant even in the AFL Ablett snr and jnr.

In the artistic/musical sphere, I think Nick Cave will be remembered internationally as a true icon.

Why does Obama seem to be seen in such a positive light?

The US has had more than its fair share of trouble since he came into office.

Do some reading on US politics and history.

Out of interest, do you appreciate just how screwed the US was in 2008?

I'd definitely like to know more about recent US history and politics.

Of course.

Obama will also be considered an icon because he is the Democrat that broke the Republican party for a generation.

please get a job as a political journalist.

by being black and having a slick marketing team?

Actually, by very skilfully splitting the Tea Party fundamentalists away from the mainstream types. Also by his very very astute building of a "coalition" of support that runs across a number of demographics, thus making it harder and harder for the Republicans to gain enough votes to win states.
