The Shells I agree with, but banana's are close to the most useless item ever in a game. The only time you'd be lucky to get a hit what when someone was right on your arse and you put it out if you were lucky enough to have it at the time. Otherwise, completely useless and would work 1 in every 30 times.
The point I'm making is, Mario Kart counters red shells by letting you hold scrappy first place items behind you by pressing L. It doesn't defend against Spike shells but it usually works. The shields in Modnation Racers barely last a second, even when you've got a full boost meter.
Probably could be a couple of defensive weapons to use in MNR, but the shield still works well from what I have played. It's not that hard to get the shield up and working in time, really don't need super fast reflexes, you get a second or two warning time. Sometimes you might not, but it's the same in Mario Kart too and you often don't have anything to defend yourself in MK either.I don't see the whole much more polish. Mario Kart is fantastic, but there's not a whole lot that MNR does poorly in comparison.
Against level 3 items, Shields simply don't work, especially against Shockwave and Missile. Given MNR is a fast paced racing game, you don't have time to straighten up and somehow time your shield use right against a level 3 shockwave (Mind you, it'll be unlikely you'll have a high boost meter, especially on some of the shitty tracks in career). It comes down to luck in the end and that's something I'm not good at aquiring.
And on the creation elements, just like in LBP there's things that you won't think can be done that will pop up. Just like MM didn't know there were things that could be done. It's amazing what can be done with a shitload of time and work ethic.
Wario Colosseum can be done. And I'd put money on it that eventually most others will be as well.
Aha, right then, lets wait and see if the user community make a worthy Mario Kart track. I downloaded DK's Jungle Park when I had the game and it was alright albeit wrong in a few areas. If that can't be done right, I doubt a far more sophisticated track like Rainbow Road can.
That's not even getting to the other important aspect of track design. Some dude can create a similar replica of another track from some other racing game, but it'll never feel like you're actually driving the track.
