Cant say I followed the SANFL closely when the Crows came in, and if I did it was to see what the mighty double blues were doing.
So I didnt see much of Modra before he came into the side during the preseason cup in his first year.
What was his reputation prior to hitting it big in the AFL?
Was he seen as a crazy good talent or not?
Was he expected to do what he did?
Did we draft him or did he come in through our zone consessions?

I was like 12 when he made his start but from what I have heard since is that he was regarded as a freak by everyone before he came into the AFL system. Just a natural talent. I don't think anyone expects someone to reach such heights but I am sure they thought he was capable.

My old man coached him briefly at Loxton when he was a junior. Said he had immense talent, was just a bit unpolished and hated taking criticism.

A good story I heard about Modra was when he was an 18 year old playing for Renmark. The Modra name had a reputation, I've heard people say that one of his brothers was a better footballer than Mods and everybody understood that the Modra's could all play football. It was also known that young Tony was a protected species, the Modra's were a hard bunch, I think 1, if not both of Tony's brothers had been to jail, so nobody messed with Tony

Anyway, I'm not sure if it was a final, grand final or regular game, but Renmark was losing so at half time, they threw Tony into the ruck who then basically won the game of his own boot. Pretty remarkable for an 18 year old to win an A-grade game of footy from taking the ball out of the ruck and kicking goals until the team took the lead and then won the game.

So it was known that he had real football pedigree and was capable of freakish things before he went to play at West Adelaide.

From memory, he wasn't kicking bag after bag of goals for West Adelaide in 1991 or 1992. He played 5 or 6 AFL games in 1992 and kicked a few goals but no huge bags.

I don't think anyone expected Tony Modra to be a century goal kicker in 1993 or to become the human highlight reel. Plenty of people had confidence in him to become a good player but never bigger than Bradman as labeled by Greham Cornes.

True story and have seen his brothers play. Can't recall which one but likely the one you talk of, saw him kick something like 15 goals one day at Renmark I think. Beast of a man.

I think he played as a forward flank in those years.
I reckon Hodges got injured in an Ansett Cup (pre-season game for the youngies) in '93 and a few other options for key forward were out as well or not good enough and Cornes (or maybe it was Kerls) thought "well he's probably the straightest kick in the team lets try him, then proceeded to kick 10 in R1 and 49 in 8 games and the rest was history.
Hodges has a very good back end of the 92 season and Ansett Cup and was seen to be finally settling in at AFC.
Sliding doors moment for both players

Scott Hodges did a calf the Tuesday before round 1 and Scott Hodges and Tony Modra were best mates at the club.

Too many people wanted to make them enemies but they were great mates.

What a partnership they could have been. I think the enemies thing merely resulted around the hatred for Port that many held at the time. Its probably why Hodges never felt truly comfortable.

That is a whole thread in itself.

However and keeping it short. Scott Hodges was (is) married to Jack Cahill's daughter and Cahill was in many people eye the person who should have been given the crows coaching job.

Cornes got it and rest is history with the crows and magpies dislike of each other.
