Not all privatisations are equal.

Selling government owned airlines and banks when there are already private alternatives, as Keating did, makes economic sense by increasing competitive efficiency and reducing sovereign risk for taxpayers in markets. Especially in the face of globalisation and competition from multi-national/international providers. Governments are best focussed on market regulation rather than being participants in these markets.

Selling off local market focussed government owned utilities/assets in the electricity and water sectors and the public transport market to the private sector, as (mostly) conservative state governments (but started in Victoria by the Kirner Labor Government) have done in several states is an entirely different proposition and is mostly based on political dogma and aimed at revenue raising.

Funny how you and other lefties change your tune . Firstly the story was Kennett privatised like he was the first only and last leader to do that. That’s been debunked. So now it’s “he privatised more than anyone else”.

In 1990 when Victoria was forced to sell our bank, the State Bank of Victoria, Paul Keating warned that the dire financial woes of Victoria “threatened to destabilise the national economy”.

That is why Kennett privatised. And with the SECV he only sold what Kirner hadn’t previously sold. So stop pretending Kennett was solely responsible for privatisation of thE SECV.

But, since Liberal's only had 4 years in the last 25, it sounds like a trick question. Meaningful change takes time.

- Health system

- Crime rates

- Justice system

The Libs solution on crime is to throw more people in jail at a huge cost to the taxpayer. They also created PSO's at Train stations because a loud minority complained about a few scary looking people hanging out there. Again lots of resources wasted IMO and what has it actually achieved? They mostly wander around every night doing nothing and get paid for it. Don't tell me they deter crime because they don't. Labor has maintained the PSO's because it doesn't hurt them politically, it's a meh policy. I don't look at something like that and think " wow I'm so glad I have the PSO's here keeping me safe". How did Kennett go with the Western Ring Road? So good they have had to redo it 3 times since and only when Labor has been in government. Poorly designed just like Fed square was but now runs quite well when you invest into it properly and have the right connections and duplications in place.
