WB v Richmond The Naughton Knee of Death

No commentary required other than to point out it was Vlastuin both times, poor bastard. Timmy probably sent him a sympathy card after the game.

RD 15 WB v Richmond - The Freijah Bag of Tricks

Freijah on the run leaps up and reaches back to collect the Libba handpass ...

Then fends of an opponent with his right, still holding the ball clear in his left. He kicks with the outside of his right foot to find McNeil for an easy mark and goal. All done at pace.

Be excited by this kid. He's still only 19!

3.30ish mark of the 3rd, Bont kicks it to a leading West, who marks and goals.
Josh Dolan runs over to Bont, pats him on the bum, pulls out his mouthguard and says (I'm assuming), "well done, son".

Not at all overawed, or feeling out of place. Sees himself as a senior player, the young fella 👌

Man, I love his attitude!
That’s probably the one I was thinking of but loved how Bonti was running in with ball in one hand, points to where he wants Westy to run and kicks it to him perfectly

Another one for the Dolan highlights reel.

R15 WB v Richmond - Naughton work rate

Last series for this game. Naughton is a bit out of touch as we have all noticed. But being out of touch doesn't mean you stop trying and stop contributing. Here are a few examples of Naughton staying in the game. I could have put in quite a few pics of poor delivery to him like VDM kicking out on the full when he was free in the pocket. Or one of Buku spoiling his mark (actually that's in the pic above where Astro clatters into Vlastuin) but these support efforts below are easily forgotten or perhaps not even noticed.

PC1. Q1 first minute. Naughton is spoiled but recovers quickly to tap the ball back in to Bont for an easy goal.

PC2. Q4 first minute. Kennedy drives the ball deep. Naughton keeps Broad engaged, runs around behind Darcy in case it goes over the top (unlikely!), keeps Broad at a distance and ensures Darcy has only one defender to cope with. Darcy marks and goals. No stat for Naughton but he drew a good defender and did his bit.

PIC3. Q4 Naughton is tackled and spun around but he gets the handpass away for hs second GA of the game to Bont.

These are nothing spectacular, but he's earning his keep until better days arrive.

Looks like dogwatch is aiming for a gig on The Agenda Setters, possibly squeezing between Caro and Ccane on the set. :p
Errrk. Not likely!
I'd have to put on the bio-hazard suit.

Great post, DW. He's finding ways to impact even when he's not marking or getting on the end of it. Is he playing at the level his salary suggests he should be? Definitely not right now. Is he contributing enough that we are still better with him in the side? I'd say yes. The main thing Bevo doesn't want is opposition defenders intercept marking, which I don't think has been as big of a problem for us this year as it was in the past. I think we are one of the best F50 ground ball teams in the comp and we also have the best marking player, so we don't need Naughton to take marks (even though it would be nice if he could take a few more).

Not sure which thread to post this.

10 mins ago, marked exactly 25 years since we beat the Bombers in the flood game.

What a game!!
Thank Dog for Terry Wallace and that game. We would forever be hearing about "The Invincibles of 2000" if we hadn't beaten them that night. It prevented them from becoming the first team ever to go through a season undefeated (incl finals).

So it was nice to celebrate the occasion with another 90+ point thrashing of the Bombers, the first season in their history that it has happened three times (twice against us!)

Although they went on to win the flag that year it has been all downhill from there. And they are still somewhere down near the bottom of the hill.

I think we broke them. :)

Luke Cleary definitely had a moment worthy of this thread on the weekend.

We are behind 75-66 early in the last quarter, with a win desperately needed to keep our season alive.

No goals yet in Q4 and tension is extreme.

Libba wins the ball on the boundary in our defensive half with 17.41 remaining.

Cleary is open for a handball, but Libba elects to kick across his body down the line to a contest.

Under the circumstances, Cleary could understandably go into his shell, play it safe and defensive.

Instead he backs himself.

22 seconds of playing time later, Freijah has the ball in tight quarters 35 metres from goal with nowhere to go.

Cleary has run 100 metres to provide the running option. Goes on to kick the goal that gave us our Q4 momentum.

Boldness and execution when it mattered most.

Couldn't want a better example of a small but pivotal moment in a young man's career.

McNeil’s awareness and quick thinking in traffic to get the ball to Richards on the boundary for his goal.

Baker racing after the ball with his opponent, then shoving him out of the way, picking it up and sending it in to “Naughton!”

3rd quarter around 17 minutes left when Naughton kicked his second of the quarter.

Freijah sizzled a great kick into him. Naughton gave him a big nod after the mark

Loved to see it

Was even better because Darcy, I think it was, had previously ripped into Freijah for not centering the ball.
