Monday Night Football - A Ratings Hit
Tuesday, March 20, 2007 - 1:48 PM
Bundaberg Rum Monday Night Football proved an instant success among rugby league fans with outstanding ratings on Fox Sports for the South Sydney Rabbitohs v Sydney Roosters clash at Aussie Stadium last night.

The first Monday Night Football clash of the 2007 Telstra Premiership attracted an average audience of 316,000 and a reach of 690,000.

It is one of the biggest ratings figures for a rugby league game on FOX SPORTS and one of the highest rating Australian events ever on subscription television.:thumbsu:

Fox Sports CEO David Malone was delighted with the ratings and also excited about the future of Monday Night Football.

“This is a great start for Monday Night Football on Fox Sports,” Malone said. “The fans and viewers have underlined its potential, both by crowd numbers and strong ratings. Monday Night Football has been embraced from round one and we look forward to its continuing success.”

The ratings delivered a double bonus for rugby league with a crowd of 24,127 braving driving rain at Aussie Stadium for the Rabbitohs v Roosters clash.

“We have stated that it is important to have good crowd numbers as well as good ratings for the success of Monday Night Football and rugby league delivered both last night,” Malone added.

NRL Chief Executive, Mr David Gallop, said Monday night football couldn’t have had a better opening night than the classic match between the Rabbitohs and Roosters at Aussie Stadium.

“Every bit as important as the ratings and the all time attendance record for a Rugby League round has been the quality of the football on display,” Gallop said.

“Monday night is another chance to showcase the Telstra Premiership and fans have certainly shown their interest in the concept.

“We’ve got an exciting season ahead and a lot of work to do to maintain the momentum but certainly the football is off to a flying start.”

so how many freebies did they give away? :p
The NRL don't include freebies in their official attendances. I could be wrong, but i'm very sure of this (correct me please if this isn't the case)

Top stuff. The crowd was great and the ratings were huge. Great days ahead for rugby league!

why would they have a practice match at Australia's biggest white elephant. They should have played it in the country rather than at an 83,000 seat ground.
Because the Swans requested a match on Telstra Stadium before their Round 1 clash with West Coast so they could allow their players to get use to the ground after the off season, try out possible set plays for the ground and get a game in metro Sydney considering they had travelled in each of the past 3 weeks (the game at North Sydney doesn't count as that only 15 a side and most of the side was not playing).

As for the reason the game was free entry, part of the AFL's contract with Telstra Stadium that any practice matches are free entry because of the lack of interest in the games and the fact the Swans/AFL are basically paying the rent for 4 matches at TS when they only use it for 3 matches because of North pulling out of games in Sydney (they were playing their interstate home game there when the TS deal was signed).

In anycase, there has been no example or proof of the NRL handing out free tickets on mass to MNF so I doubt that it happened.
