I've noticed that as I progress through my career, you just spend more as you earn more. I think it's the human way.

This is truth. For most people, the more you earn, the more you will waste. Something to be aware of, and avoid (yeah it's fun, until you complain you can't buy a house, or are still paying off a house).

One of the bigger lessons in life.

Saving money makes me so happy. I am a bit of a tight arse but it genuinely makes me how much I can reach in X amount of months.

I think you're a younger version of me.

It is a pretty cool feeling when you start earning real money to see your savings start to grow, like there is a realisation than you have an increasing pile of money that you don't actually need to get by.

I still remember my first proper wage in the workforce. Got paid monthly and was the standard 2 weeks in arrears and 2 weeks in advance. I'd been there for a week when I got 3 weeks pay (good on me starting just before the pay period). Was still only 18, living at home with mum and dad and thought I had all the money in the world.

I got paid fortnightly for my first real job after being paid weekly as a supermarket lackey. Was a long way from big money (I think after HECS and tax it was only like $1300 or so) but my rent was cheap and I was used to living like a student so I still felt like I had more money than I possibly needed to survive.

It's perfectly normal to adjust your spending the more you earn but I think you should always factor savings into it.

Yeah i've always tried to save. You never know what is around the corner and if you need that rainy day money it's good to know that you're covered.

I've blown a lot of money over the years on non-essential stuff. God knows how much has gone on airfares.

But it was my money to blow and at no stage was it going to put me into debt, make me go hungry, default on my home loan etc.

I bought a TV my second year of working full time, a pretty good quality one. I wanted to get one, so I saved up until I had that amount in my bank account that I could spare to spend on something like that and I bought one. Do people just not think like that any more?
Yeah we did the same thing with our wedding which is in August. Looked at he much it was all going to cost (roughly) about two years before the big day and just started saving til we had the amount to pay it off in full. Not that we are having a massive flashy wedding but we just wanted to give ourselves plenty of time to save up the money. Whereas mates of mine are just getting a personal loan to pay for theirs to go with the house and car loans, which is fine but I just couldn't do that myself because I like to pay things of in full.

Ha, not sure if good or bad :D MEB_ can confirm :D

In all seriousness, I don't mind that. You seem very balanced/reasonable and I like what you post often.

But yeah, saving money is good and pleases me greatly.

Personal loans, ugh.
Good ol 10% interest rates!

My ex used to be a financial counselor and the amount of people who were financially struggling and took out a low doc personal loan :|

Cheers mate.
Always been pretty cautious with my money. Never really spend it unless I have to....And do spoil myself a bit sometimes.

I worked as casual well into my 20s (only started working FT last year), so always had to be cautious with money. And since starting work FT, I saved half/most of my wage and spent when I needed to. Occassionally I'll splurge on stuff (but generally it's just stuff I need).

And obv with the apartment on its way, trying to save as much as we can so we can pay off a big chunk of the loan.

Not cautious, more sensible. I don't save every cent, will go out for meals etc and buy clothes when I see things I like.
Pretty much what I do.
Certainly don't eat out as much as I used to though. And probably only get take away once a week when I used to get it 3 times a week.

Yeah its tough, no doubt about it. I am a huge tight arse when spending money on myself. I always think: "Would I buy this if I had $X in my bank account?" or "Would I have spent this when I was a student?" It works when I am by myself but its a harder attitude to take when out with colleagues or friends. A macca's run isn't too well received anymore when having lunch with a work mate.

Then at some point, this thinking started to permeate all of my purchasing decisions, i.e. "How will people judge me if I buy this item". Its ridiculous, but people do judge you more and more as you climb whatever ladder of success you aspire to climb, and you then have to weigh the benefits/costs of being frugal in each situation. For example, I am not into cars at all and have no desire to ever pay more than 5 grand for one. But if I show up to my client's office driving said car, its probably not going to help me win any future business from them.

I have this dilemma too. I'm not a car-person either, so I'm still driving my (slightly battered) student car, which apparently isn't good enough for my profession haha :p . I CBB buying a new one though.

Having said that, I haven't had macca's in years.
I'm not so frugral when it comes to eating out (dinners, brunches, high teas etc)- more then happy to splurge on it
But I only buy lunch about once a week (again, only if I can catchup with someone during the lunch break) Home-made lunches usually taste so much better anyway :p

Well, rather than just a rainy day savings account, bump up super or invest in a more agressive stock plan. Basically, try make the money work for you rather than sit it in a relatively low interest account.
Maybe I will.

I will blame you for making me homeless

Have seen this quote a few times ...

"Too many people spend money they don't have..to buy things they don’t want..to impress people that they don’t like"

Have recently seperated from my wife and setting up my new place realised how little you really need, fitted out a whole house bar a washing machine, through second hand furniture and stuff from friends and family....

My sister in law is a massive "Keeping up with the Joneses" type, especially when it comes to events. Her wedding was a ****ing production (it literally cost more than 3x what mine did) and now it looks like she's going to do the same for her baby's first birthday. I was thinking a coffee and cake type of thing...there's 75 people on the guest list, fairy floss machine, popcorn cart, games etc. She wastes so much money.
