Monfries on the ball and he responds. Geez Sheedy is some master coach.

What position did he play when we drafted him again?

Fletcher was drafted as a ruck/forward. Justin Leppitch as a full forward. Gavin Wanganeen was an electrifying forward. Cameron Ling was a full forward who was never expected to have to run more than 40 metres at a time. What position someone played as a junior isn't neccesarily a guide to the role they'll end up playing at AFL level, but Monfries has certainly enjoyed being pushed into the middle a little more.

Angus is certainly getting himself more involved in the game lately and is putting himself into more situations where he can start hurting his opponents.

Prior to a few weeks ago he was doing neither.

I see monfries struggles stemming from a bit of an identity crisis. I think that the coaching staff probably feel his skill set is best suited to the "Nathan Brown" type roll of forward rolling up into the midfield for 30-40% of game time, in this roll his quick mind and sharp skills would be very damaging. I could see him picking up 20ish possies a game and contributing with a goal and a few goal assists, very Mercuri-esque.

The problem is that this role is a tough one to learn, and he probably still sees himself as an onballer, where Sheeds probably wants him to develop his forward line play first to round him into the player he will become. The decision to release him into the midfield a bit more later in this year is a good one, it will free him up a bit and allow him to finish off the year with a bang which should gee him up for a big preseason.

monfries has been good the past couple of weeks, seemed to has thrived with getting more time in the midfield with no watson, pev nd j.johnson he needs to be doing that if he doesnt want to be traded.

Thats what i was thinking, but i'd like him to be in the midfield more than 30-40%, i'd like to see him pushing up the ground into the midfield about 70% and kind of acting as an extra midfielder.
We can't have him playing as deep as he has been at times this year because we need to clear the forward line for Lloyd to lead into to get the best out of him.

Me and very few others (about 3 or 4) called for Monfries to be dropped when his form was going nowhere by rd 11'ish. Everyone else squeeled in protest..NOOOOOOOOO!!!..not Angus...don't pick on Gus!

But sooner or later..it had to happen..and it did.

The arguement was that Monfries just needed to clear his head of the 'pressure to perform' syndrome and play in the 2nds and just get some touch back.

I've only read about 5 posts back in this thread and have no idea whats been said about Monfries...but he's back and ready to play..still a star in the making.:thumbsu:

I've seen all year ppl potting this guy on here.
As i've been saying all friggen year play the kid in the guts.
Oh and what happens the kid plays 2 of his best games in a row playing in the guts.
Seriously think this kid could b a star for us. Give it a little bit more time trust me.
GO GUSSY

He didn't play well because he got game time in the middle.
The fact that he played there and did well didn't prove that he was playing out of position.

It proved that he had to make adjustments to his game and when they came his performances would lift. Being dropped and being made to work for gametime in the middle is why he has stepped up.

He was handled very well by our coaching staff.

I have to totally disagree. This is the old Sheedy masterstroke,. Play em out of position and they are average, then put them in the right position and they play well and take the credit for the move.

Needs to learn what a shepherd is if he is going to continue playing in the middle.

At one point in the game he dished off the handball and then ran past the opposition player who tackled the ball carrier, all the while calling for the cheap stat. Cant believe the lack of sheparding in our team. Its actually noticeable when someone lays a shepard because it is such a rarity.

So i assume you advocate him not getting a senoir game in his first two years right? Considering he didn't have anywhere near the body type to play in the middle up until now- and even now he's very slight of frame.

Angus, for the most part hasn't physically been ready to play in the midfield.

At the start of the season, he didn't deserve it. He played far too much selfish football to be rewarded.

Monfries was handled perfectly.

I will not question Monfries attitude - but he is a prime reason as to why sheeds is gone - lack of player development.

I am sick of the body can't handle AFL crap that is dished up week after week. He is a mid - we drafted him as a mid - how does he develop as a mid playing forward pocket. Answer is he doesn't.

If he is going to get smashed in the middle, then play him in bursts and maybe have him play fewer senior games. This is just typical Sheedy and it is why our midfield has been so crap - he has been so reluctant to put smaller bodies int he middle - he tried to convert Solomon and McPhee and the like into midfielders - we all know how well that went.

He debuted at 67kg's.

He then had a shoulder reco and couldn't put on upper-body weight during his first preseason.

I would have thought playing AFL footy is better than not playing at all.

He was a damn fine small forward for most of his first two seasons.

When he played poorly this season he should have been dropped earlier.

Yep, you're right.

Stanton hasn't played nearly 80 games in the midfield.
Winderlich nearly 50.
Dyson 49.
Lovett hasn't been moved to the wing.
Dempsey when fit hasn't been afforded game time.
