He debuted at 67kg's.

He then had a shoulder reco and couldn't put on upper-body weight during his first preseason.
But he still could pinch hit the odd time - or if he is too small - don't play him in the AFL - play him in the middle in the VFL

I would have thought playing AFL footy is better than not playing at all.

He was a damn fine small forward for most of his first two seasons.

When he played poorly this season he should have been dropped earlier.
I would argue player development in the position you should play is just as, if not more important.

Yep, you're right.

Stanton hasn't played nearly 80 games in the midfield.
Winderlich nearly 50.
Dyson 49.
Lovett hasn't been moved to the wing.
Dempsey when fit hasn't been afforded game time.

Stanton is a freak - he would have played in the middle in any club.

Winderlich, Dyson and Lovett (Demspey is irrelevant due to lack of game time) have all played extended stints away from the ball - all have spent too much time down back.

Because like Monfries, they weren't up to it.

Few players come straight into the AFL and play extended periods in the midfield.

A lot don't even do it at VFL level.

In his first two years, a lot of the time we didn't have a choice but to play Monfries. I actually made the comment elsewhere, that had the club been stronger he would have played 20-30 games less.

My tune is not changing.. I'm just clarifying my position.

My point still stands that Monfries does not give us anything that our current midfield does.

Even if he steps up I don't think he's the type of player that will complement our midfield.

If we trade him and get a good deal then we can get best available or best tall. Look at trading and on trading that deal so that somehow we have position and bargaining power to get a KPP defender in the next year or two.

It's not as simple as trade him and get KPP defender in draft.

I've seen enough and he's not up to it.

We should have looked at trading him last year in a package deal when he would have had a little more bargaining power like I mentioned above.

I like Angus, but he is definitely the type of player we should look at shopping around for trade. Sure it might bite us on the ass, but the risk should be taken. While he has some value, use it.

Thats it for me as far as Angus is concerned.
I just fail to see what he gives our team.

At least guys like Johns are big bodies and can be developed for the future (either forward or back).

Angus is slow, small and just not up to AFL standard.

Too late to trade him now I would imagine too. Has lost all value.

You forgot to add no footy smarts as a midfielder. He is pretty much in nowhere land now. Doesnt give enough to play as a small forward and has no effect at all when he goes into the middle.

Is it just a confidence thing ant ?

Or is it that the game has now gotten too quick for him. Me thinks he would have been handy at AFL level 5 or 6 years ago but the pace of the game seems to really have made him vulnerable.

there are some people on this bloddy forum who have no idea about football. i go to training often and see monfries putting in the hard yards. runs hard on game day, works his arse off. people on this forum just seem to jump on players back as soon as they have a few bad game. he kiked 2 goals playing the small forward against carlton and had 8 free kick for agains them. small bodie yes but thats something he has to work at. get of his back he will be a great player for tthe club. james said he will be a future leader of the club. dnt think u can judge a player lyk he can. get off his back and watch him improve.

there will be a few tuff times ahead at the moment. cant blame a few young players for everything. y not look at the facts lyk we always break down at CHF week after week. we have an awsome ruck man who continually puts in week after week and wins many taps. just not getting the clearences. these things will come with a new coach. times are changing at the football club, just gota wiat. were an awsome club and its worth waiting to see a few of these kids develop.

Feel that he is suffering from 'Luke Ball syndrome' in that he is best known for being courageous but not much else at the moment.

Has got the skills to be a very good player for us but is just not getting involved enough in the play.

Is probably best suited to playing an inside midfielder role but with Jobe and JJ firing, its hard to see where he best suits our structure.

Would like to see him develop into a Kerr type player as he does have the ability to get to that sort of level.

He's a dweeb. He obviously doesn't work hard enough otherwise he would've bulked up considerably over the off season. Too easy to push off the ball... whenver any of Essendon's soft actually attack the ball that is. Poor darts Essendon, you can get ____ed, i'm not going to another game this season!!!

Sorry - Angus is now in his 4th year and IMO is going backwards.

I'm sure he works hard at training but if you're not up to it - then you're just not up to it.

Of all the players who are the "least favored" on this forum, Monfries offers the least.

Laycock can go forward and take a good grab.

Dyson has pace and looks to run with the ball.

Johns, good hands, strong body, and good from a set shot in front of goal.

I can't see anything that Monfries can offer at the moment, and can't wait for Lonergan to get back!

Is it just me or am I the only one who thinks that Angus plays selfish most of the time. There were a few times today when Lloyd or McPhee would lead into space and Monfries would lead in front of them, pretty much filling the whole without knowing it.

Then there was his shot at goal from outside 50.....

Where the hell is his best position?

And what WTF does anything you have just said have to do with him being smart enough to play midield ? I go to training a bit and see how ahrd he works but it has not helped him perform on the field.
Monfries was a disapointment last year and has been this year as well.
And FFS this is not your mobile phone so enough with the bloody text language.....
