Collingwood drafted Brown last year at 10 to play defence.
Glass and McPharlin were high picks. There are numerous examples if people care to look.
My tune is try and draft a KPP defender if there's one available or if there's a player we can turn into one. If theres nothing then get the best available and go all guns blazing the next year.
It's a pretty simple simple theory but you guys have the blinkers on and are more focused on nitpicking my one line summation then thinking laterally.
Monfries had a pretty good game today. We still got smashed in the middle though and they had 66 inside 50's.

I reckon today was Gus' best game for the year. He seemed to actually fit into the midfield as opposed to filling in there.

Yep, and with a good pre-season he will be able to play midfield fulltime next year. Showed some class today, and is a handly goalkicker as well.
Monfries best weapon seems to be getting under bodies and dishing out a smart handball. Shows courage in these situations as well. Can be used to good effect in two ways:
1. On the forward line, setting up others for shots on goal (currently used this way)
2. HOPEFULLY, will learn to enploy this in the midfield as well, and be able to spend some time WINNING BALL for us under the packs and getting it to our outside players.
Definitely would not trade him.

He may just have taken Johns off the deal table with that effort. A couple more like that and he may be safe.

Best game I have seen him play for ages yesterday. Did pretty well in the middle.
Gee maybe i should put my hat in the coaches ring as i've been saying all year Gus should b playing in the guts as he shows more balls than any of our midfielders and he always gives it his all and never shirks an issue and always presents.
The guys been played out of position and gets taken off coz of it coz he don't get a heap of the ball.

This guy shows more promise out of the lot for mine out of the young small brigade coz of the above mentioned.

Nah mate just that i've stated that this guy has been stuffed around all year by Sheedy and finally he puts 2 and 2 together and lets him loose in the midfield and he kills it.
Then i come on here and everyone bags the guy coz he wasn't playing so well yet nobody wants to blame the coaching staff for his downfall.
Just seems to many ppl on here go by what they see on tv or at the game compared to what really should b happening.
Its clear as day some blokes get played out of position which hinders their performance hence why they lose confidence and end up getting dropped

Yeah as i've clearly stated above maybe if he was consistently played in the middle he would b alot more consistent.
We clearly lack someone with balls in the middle to actually go and get the pill.
Would rather play a guy who actually has a crack and get it 15 times doing it the hard way than someone who gets the ball 30 times hanging out and continuously turn it over a la Stanton and Peverill.

The reason Pev gets more time in the middle over Monfries because he puts his head over the ball and runs hard into space. When Monfries can do both at the same time he'll get more time in the middle.

our problem in the middle isn't about courage, it is about pace and foot skills.
i'm not sure if gus excels in either of these areas

I agree. He seems like a natural forward evidenced by his ability to lead to the right places and to sniff out a goal. A bit like Phil Matera although obviously not as good at this stage.

Anyone else think his first half yesterday was his best half of footy at the club?
If u wanna class that as putting your head over the ball when u constantly go to ground even when nobodys around u go right ahead as thats what Pev does constantly, the guy never keeps his feet.
And i would have Monfries skills over Pevs anyday of the week.
As of stated above it ain't how much u get the pill its what u do with it and Pev does stuff all with it.
Monfries doesnt have the motor yet to compete with any of our regular midfielders and his consistency & application would be put into question even more so. Aside from that, Monfries has stated himself numerous times that he prefers to play in the middle, so nothing new there.
I don't totally agree with that.
We have some players on our team that don't show enough courage.
While pace is nice to have from your guys in the middle, you know what you really need from there guys?
The ability to win the ball at the stoppages.
Apart from Watson,( And obviously Hird ) we don't have anyone that currently plays in that position that can consistently win the stoppages.
I will be called stupid for this but after Watson our next best stoppages player is M.Johnson, but he never plays there.
Foot skills are essential of course, but without the ball your skills won't matter much.
It's also not down to our Rucks, as even when our Rucks win, we don't get enough clearances.
Monfries goes to ground more than anyone on our list bar Lovett.
It's the reason he gets so many free kicks. I like Gus, but if you're going to measure his strengths against anyone else's then Pev is the wrong guy.
Monfries does have better skills, but it does matter how much pill you get. You actually have to have someone into position to receive the ball. Pev does that for us when very few do.
Pevs disposal lets him down, but by getting it he actually has the opportunity to do something with it. Pevs biggest problem is he kicks too often when he can handball.
If Monfries did the sheer amount of work Pev did, then there wouldn't even be a question mark next to his name.
