Mongrel - who has it who doesn't ? Does it Matter?

Not sure why he got dropped from the GCS game and got made the scapegoat. Kennedy and Cerra were terrible (15 possessions each when Crippa wasn't out there) and were a big part of why we lost that game.

He dropped his head after errors and dropped off a bit. Needed to go back, tick his boxes and refind the confidence.

Being dropped back to the reserves doesn't have the same meaning it did in the past where if you were out it was hard to get back.

I was wondering why the BigFooty Carlton supporter has a total different perspective on Mongrel than the rest of the AFL community.
After reading this thread I now understand.

Newman is my #1 mongrel at Carlton.

How many other players ( currently available to play) do you think make JaB's list?

Do you think mongrel is important in '23 or are you still a fan of the haircut?

Honestly from what we've seen lately, mongrel needed more than ever. Look at that McCreary guy for Pies just shoving dudes over and beelining the ball, our guys are just too timid and reactionary in comparison.

Think for the role he plays and his pressure he exerts, Owies has mongrel.

Cotters is most likely back this week (so I read on the Carlton FB page a few days ago) and he is definitely an old school junk yard scrapper.

Depends what you mean by mongrel - LOB loves to get teammates back when there is a scuffle but wont put his head over the ball. Wrong type of 'mongrel'

I want mongrel in the sense that they'll always put their head over the ball, go hard at the opponent and wont take any shit from the opposition - not one or the other

I think Motlop is going to be added to the Mongrel list.

Cincotta a chance

yep to both.

weiters, Saad, Boyd, Cotters, even Owies has a bit. Hollands is courageous.

There aren’t many “soft” players at AFL level.

Its ruthlessness and willingness to play on the edge I‘d like to see more of…

Frankly we need 18 mongrels that play mongrel football.
That is, they play to win, not to have fun.
They can have fun after winning a premiership.
Mongrels that smile, whilst being mongrels, are the best type of mongrels

Yes this. They seem to have moments (or I guess, quarters) where they dial up the pressure and look like they really want it, but it's like only after they're given a rev up.

They shouldn't need to be constantly revved up and and kicked in the arse to "want it". It should just be the case every time they run out.

There are a few hundred posts regarding definition - but your bolded bits are good summary - I could add more
We don’t have much of it … Cowan naturally has it but you don’t want an 18 year old being the only one. I can’t think of any one else
Cowan showed good signs in game one - need more evidence
Durds! Always seems to be in the thick of it & isn’t scared to go anyone, lovely bloke but definitely has a bit of white line fever, love it
4 quaearters required and at least a goal a game to go with 5 tackles
Boyd has some mongrel, love the way he tackles with mongrel.
Showed signs - currently not playing

Cincotta ticks my box - Motlop has to kick goals and make 5 punishing tackles a game

Hollands makes my list - Saad in a different way - when he feels like it

yep - that is what winning culture is

Hollands has a bit of the right stuff too.

Its attitude not actions that really defines mongrel to my mind.
Actions are the only things that count
Harry has mongrel.... unfortunately it comes in the form of his kicking for goal.....
Harry looks like a skinny Tarzan and plays like Jane - doesn't make my mongrel list and probably never will - currently amongst the bottom 4 as far as most disappointing players in '23 goes.
