Mongrel - who has it who doesn't ? Does it Matter?

Even Fish and Dow have started cracking in a bit better
My biggest complaint of Fisher earlier in the season was a lack of intent. It impacted every aspect of his game. Always had the skills and ability to be a great footballer, but without that intent it didn't matter. Since he's been back in the team. He's almost had more intent than his actual ability. It's a complete turnaround and a real testament to his effort. Even if you loses his place in the 22, he's earned the kudos for turning it around. This year could have been the breaking of him but he's positioned himself into it potentially being his making

Yep..
And I forgot to mention Acres..
Hard as a cats head..
You can live with his skill errors when his contesting ability and constant pressure creates so many more opportunities than his skill errors lose. The difference isn't even close.

Hard at the contest>boarding mongrel>mongrel, team (less Williams, Jsos due to injury)

Boyd Weitering Newman
Gov Kemp Saad

Pitto Kennedy Hewett
Acres Cripps Cotts

Owies Harry Martin
Mots Charlie Fog

Cincotta Doc Walsh Durdin

Would like our big blokes to have more mongrel
Give Ollie Hollands a year or two to work on his body and he'll smash his own place in this 22. Just too small right now but it's there

Niggle or running in for a push and shove knowing nothing will happen is often used by soft players to mask a lack of mongrel.
Traditionally we've had more than a few of these types we now have more that will genuinely go and it's no surprise that we've improved as a result.

about ****ing time, eh JustaBattler

I think Voss has largely eradicated softness.

Now what has to be done is that any signs of half-stepping, bludging, selfish play are eradicated.

eg#1 I like Kemp's attacking nature - but I seriously dislike watching him constantly give a handball and instead of running a block for the receiver try and run outside the contest to receive again - I hate that it disrespects a team mate who ahs worked to give you an option and all they need is a block to give them free space

eg #2 I dislike watching the same fancied mid who gets a game because injuries run one way at one speed and another way at half the pace - pisses me off that bludging DNA is always there just as bad is he is #1 hospital passer in the team doesn't mind seeing a team mate get crunched - disgusting.

There are some players on the list ( still) who have lifted from jelly to just soft - they wont be on the list in a year's time.
Who’s number 2 jab?

paddy dow put a short one in last week, isn't a player around who wouldn't have done it, but hopefully the feeling it brings, particularly watching team-mates getting bashed in packs, drives him and others onto better things - I wasn't meaning toughness, just his game in general when I used to suggest chris judd would embarrass his team-mates into lifting - how could he not?

Same Paddy Dow who sat happily under an absolute hospital ball & didnt bat an eyelid?
“Short one” wasn’t that “short” but people see what they want to.
“Mongrel” is subjective, I don’t want a side with yappy, tough man, pricks, I want players who are hard at it.
A lot with the “mongrel” moniker are less skilled and have to inflict more physical presence to make up for a lack of skill.
I wouldn’t say Kennedy has “mongrel” but the bloke is hard AF, the amount of times he knows he’s about to cop a hiding but just takes it is amazing. He winces a little, gets up & smiles.

Everyone flinches at some point, it's when it becomes endemic that it's a problem.
You need to trust your teammates, when you can't indecision & errors creep in.

Agree re: Mongrel being subjective. Whilst I wouldn't consider him soft, Newman gets credit from some for essentially running in & engaging in pesky little brother stuff. Turn the cameras off & he probably doesn't do it..

Ok so I've gone back and read the thread from the beginning - as a forum (IMO) we were at our best when the Club was getting smashed week in week out. The thread was started way way back then.

Most of the stuff that spurred me on - has been fixed AFAIC as shown in this year's turnaround. I give credit to Voss for working this into the system and the the players who have lifted as a team their team work rates.

Any newer posters can go back to around page 10ish and read the next 6 or so pages for a summary descriptor of what the issues were back then - and maybe gain an understanding of the frustrations that most on the forum were feeling then.

Right now I feel - as a Club we are in a much better place than we have been in more than 10 years now.

Ive decided to let my disapointment at a lot of posters calls for Voss's head - go. I much prefer to get back to my preferred humour instead of insisiting on resentment towards those who were calling for Voss to be axed.

SO in this mongrel thread I will say I apologise to anyone of I have given them a too hard time or made them feel too bad or goaded them into stuff - even you deserved it.

There thats as much peace offering as this mongrel has in him.

As for Dow - I love the kid when he started at Carlton and rated him higher than all of the other spud mids SOS bnrought in - including Kennedy - which if anyone reads what I used to write about Kennedy - will see even in this thread.

Thinking things over it is pretty clear to me that something went seriously wrong for a lot of players towards the end of Bolton and the the Teague time- I think maybe thinking back Teague probably destroyed any confidence that the younger players may have had.

Dow has done some hard yards this year under Voss and has earned twice over his chances to play - I wish himn all the best as I do any player that wears out colours. He will probably never be teh player I thought he would be - but if he keeps playing to teh standards he has shown over teh last few eeks and improves on that - and just be who he is - that will be a good thing for the Club.

Well we now have a coach that rewards mongrel ( for the true definition(s) see the pages and dialogues previously quoted) and I think Voss's integrity regardintg this has positively impacted on all players and the team's performance.

Good luck in finals- where the real test of mongrel is always on show. The Club is back to where it should be every year - hopefully this is the start of a decent run for a few years - we all deserve to be able to enjoy some wins - a few times over after what we've been through as a Club for too long.

JaB.

I will now revert back to picking my favourite mongrel moments in games in this thread - feel free to add yours or disagree -just remember we are all wearing the same colours - Like I have.

Love the chest pumping in here, if Dow came charging at any of you, you’d shit your ****ing pants…

Lachie Cowan too is no shirking violet either.

Getting Tommy Alvin vibes off Moo..

best to post sober........
Na…

Just sick of the same posters sticking the knife into Dow, a Carlton listed player… Who as Carlton Members and Supporters we should be encouraging his contributions over the last few weeks that has helped us make finals for the first time in 10 years…

the same posters sticking the knife into dow? because he put a short one in, after I said most if not all players had? I think your protective efforts are not only misplaced but borderline weird...........

Do you observe or comment on any other Carlton players taking a short step over the year? I’d say not…
several - so you're wrong there - if you think I could be bothered chasing those posts down you're clearly more interested than I am in the issue - you might want to adopt a pet rather than a football player .......last drinks.........

You can make the point without the hyperbole.
I'm sure all would be rapt if he continues on with it & has a very successful career, be that with us or elsewhere.
