Interesting with the US football training regime that players put on weight and retain speed. I believe some were impressed with Ben G's stature when here.

HOW ABOUT WE GET A NFL COACH OUT HERE TO PRODUCE A COUPLE OF fit MONSTERS IN THIS GIRLY CHASEY ERA. HOW ABOUT A HAWKINS / NABLETT STEAMTRAIN. Nice to hear Ottens not afraid to crash packs. We need more like him. Make the opposition puny running boys not all that keen to flood now would it. Seems that coaches are preoccupied with marathon endurance. They say the days of 100 goals a season are over - rubbish. Let a Lockett rocket through the increasingly skinny bodied packs; equals fear and forward domination.

Geelong needs a forward monster, or two.

ANYONE ABOARD THIS IDEA?
 
hmm well im not nominating u for the coaching role thats for sure!

haha - nah , understand that US footballers are trained individually, and blockers (who put on the weight) dont retain their speed.

Running backs and wide receivers are actually quite small, and increase speed at the expense of muscle as speed is more important to those positions.

In AFL i dont think that a big player with little agility would survive - even if u didn just plonk him in the goalsquare.

A fine point u raise all the same - just not sure whether it would work.

nathan cleaned up a few this year, Grant in the bulldogs game i rememeber.

get Otto, Hawkins and Nathan in a few years running out of a top heavy square, I doubt many would stand in front of those 3.
 
That's all well and good, but in NFL the objective is to smash the guy with the ball through any means neccessary. In AFL, the game is so fast and so three dimensional that just running through a guy will most likely end up with a head-high, in the back or reckless play being called. The hip-and shoulder is in danger of being erradicated from the game... the crash tackle doesn't stand a chance.
Good idea, but doesn't suit our game.

I thought that reducing the bench to three, or two as early in the game as possible was the tactic now. Worked for Nth Melb in Canberra.

Not that we condone that sort of thing - children viewers.
 
I was surprised this was dismissed so easily.

Mal Michael, Justin Lepitch, Ruck, Brown/Bradshaw, Lynch.

Possbily the best spine I have ever seen, possibly the biggest spine I have ever seen. These men were all f*cking UNITS they were definately MONSTORS. In fact this team was full of hard tough bodies.

G-Train - doesnt leave forward 50
Lloyd - doesnt leave forward 50
Lynch - never left forward 50

Probably the three best full forwards of the last 5-8 seasons. Nablett should bulk up and not leave the forward 50.

Maybe, but there's still ways to do it legally. Forwards can still split packs flying for the ball, there's nothing wrong with that. I've actually noticed Ottens has started really hitting the packs hard. Guys that size you want throwing their weight around. Obviously though you can't have 20 guys that size, but a couple in the forward line is fine.

Have to be able to actually play as well!

Absolutely! In fact Ottens could put on another 5kg's and I still don't think it would be possible for him to get any slower. He's a bit of a barge anyways.

I was awfully fedup when Ben G wasn't prepared to use his body.

Looking at some of our tallish players coming up they look like stringbeans.
(Inc MacCarthy) I know Simmonds at Richmond went the marathon route, and he has done pretty good this season. But you need some brutes around the place. Imagine a 200cm 108kg ROOKE!

COACHES DON'T TURN EVERYONE INTO MARATHON RUNNERS! - A big mistake. A team needs to work off players strengths and weaknesses, AND NOT GET THE TALLS TO BECOME A JACK OF ALL THINGS- GOOD AT NONE - TRYING TO DEVELOP WEAKNESSES AT THE EXPENSE OF A PLAYERS NATURAL ABILITIES/PHYSIQUE.

Could this be a reason for the DISMAL performance of our forwards this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Trying to get the big guys to prepare for girly games.

I would be upset training AGAINST my natural abilities!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the BO thing. I got heavily tagged in an game of footy a few years back and ended up having a run in with the guy doing it so next time we played them I didn't shower for 3 days my own team wouldn't let me in the huddle but he had to stand me the whole day and when ever he stood next to me I put my hands on my head to open up my pits. GF at the time decided I wasn't allowed to do that again though.
 
Alot of you guys need to study the game of grid iron more than you apparently have. Take a look at the running backs and wide receivers. They aren't small.

Agility? Try getting around 6 or more steam trains, zig zagging and then catching a ball.

I think the guy they call the bus (a running back) is around 260 lbs (120 ish kg's). Ottens needs to shed a few so he can lift his work rate and lead more. Hall is probably ideal power forward size IMO
 
Gridiron is a term used outside of North America and refers to both the sports of American and Canadian Football.
