Who got the better of Brett Montgomery/Nathan Eagleton Trade back in 99?
Port got a Best and fairest and All Australian out of him but the Bulldogs got a much younger player in Eagleton and eventually got Montgomery back for the years when they challenge for a flag

What do you think?

i think the dogs won just. eagleton has become very important to them. monty was passed his best by the time port won there flag so he was not essential. but both did well.

Both did well. Monty made more of an immediate impact at Port than Eages did at the Bulldogs but Eagleton has come on and you suggest over the last couple of years he has been the better player. Montgomery did win a best and fairest and premiership at Port whereas Eagleton hasn't come close to either. Monty generally has played in the better team at Port. Bulldogs have got Monty back as a Port discard and you'd think he'd only have a year or so left in him and has been injury happered at Bulldogs.

Call me biased but a best and fairest/ premiership player far outweighs anything Eagtleton has done.

Yeah, it helps if you actually list the full trade.

Port traded Nathan Eagleton, pick #42 (Michael J. Clark).
Port received Brett Montgomery, Matthew Bishop and pick #28 (Brent Guerra)

Bulldogs traded Brett Montgomery, Stephen Powell and pick #28 (Brent Guerra)
Bulldogs received Nathan Eagleton and pick #35 (Patrick Wiggins)

Melbourne traded Matthew Bishop and pick #35 (Patrick Wiggins)
Melbourne received Stephen Powell and pick #42 (Michael J. Clark)

This deal saw the Bulldogs lose a great player and in the process damaged the culture of the club.

Before Eade, Eagleton was struggling to make an impact at Werribee but fortunately has turned this around in the last few years.

Port Adelaide big winners.

Monty & quite a number of the Bulldog faithful were not happy to see the trade done, as much as we are happy with Eagle we didn't want to lose Monty for him, let alone Cameron (who would have been worth more by himself anyway).

If you take into account the whole trade, you'd have to say Port won, despite the Bulldogs having both players on the list & Cameron as an Assistant coach.

I can't see how Bulldogs win this poll. Eagleton is a good players but Montgomery won a B&F and a premiership with the club not to mention being a key player in the years between 01-04. Yeah the Bulldogs got Monty back but he is nothing but a back up player now. Until Eagleton wins a premiership medallion and B&F you can't say the Bulldogs won out.

I remember that I cried when the trade was done because Monty was my favourite player at the time. My memory of Eagleton in his first couple of years say that he was useless, but that's probably only because I didn't like him out of principle. Eagleton has become a very valuable part of our team, and Monty was handy last year, but I think that Monty's AA with Port beats all- the premiership wasn't done by him alone....It just makes me wonder what he could have done for us had he never gone...but we got Eagleton, so in the end it all works out.

I would say Port won in this trade, gaining Montgomery and a good darft pick for eagleton and a crappier draft pick. Eagleton was solid in his first year, pathetic in his second , then brilliant halfway through rhodes first year and very good since.

Monty was very important to us when we were up and rolling, and we won a premiership. If nothing else we can't have 'lost' in the trade because we don't know if Eagleton would have had the same impact.

If you look at the whole trade and not just two players out of a big trade, Port clearly won. Bulldogs paid too much to get their man.

Eagleton had some terrible years early on at the Bulldogs and he has become a very good midfielder over the last three years or so, but he definately didnt go as far as what a lot of people thought he would when he was 19-20.

Monty won a BnF, won All Australian selection, won a premiership medal and was one of the best back flankers in the league from 00-04.

Bishop, whilst his last two seasons were below average, from 02-04 he was a very good 3rd tall and was rarely beaten.

Had Guerra stayed at Port and had his career continued as it looked like it may have, this would be a no contest.

Port in my opinion.

Dunno how Leon Cameron got in there-he went to Richmond for the picks we got Ryan Hargrave and Mitch Hahn for.

You mean Stephen Powell.
