I Why is it in the publics interest to hold an inquiry? If it was Joe Bloggs you wouldn't give a toss,

well brainwave it isn't Joe Bolggs, it is a former prominent player of our great game, I really can't believe how dumb some supporters can be, surely you can be biased without making a fool of yourself.
It is in the public interest for all the obvious reasons that only a pleb could not appreciate.

The AFL inquiry will find precisely nothing - they never do, it's all about the AFL's image. They would have said Ivan Milat had no case to answer if he was a high profile player or AFL employee.

The WCE inquiry is headed up by a politician and an accountant! A politician to spin the bullshit and the accountant to work out the least costly outcome to the club?

I think I'll wait and listen to what the coroner has to say, thanks.

It actually states in the article that the two are not exactly close. Maybe the father wants an inquiry to get back at the widow? Maybe he blames her in some way for his sons demise seems the two were separating? Why is it in the publics interest to hold an inquiry? I also dont see what it has to do with the club? Mainwaring hadn't played at the club for a long time, maybe Channel 7 should be more worried seems they were his employer at the time of his death?

Cousins visited him before he died? He isn't employed by West Coast anymore either in case you missed it.

Mainy didnt die in suspicious circumstances, everyone seems aware that he had some personal difficulties, had been using substances and that a combination of these substances likely killed him. He has the toxicology reports which likely confirm this.

Any inquiry will be into Mainys death, not the Eagles or Ben Cousins. Cousins will stick to his story (take away food, supporting a mate etc), the Eagles are irrelevant as Mainy has not been employed by the club for years.

I mean, all the best with an inquiry into any mystery (?) surrounding Mainys death but anyone who reckons it will uncover anything new about the Eagles is reaching a little and needs to find some other interests....

I know Rene Gardiner through my association with Horse Racing in rural W.A.

I know Hub because I am from the mid-west. He built a house for me in Dongara in the early 90's.

I also know, and will be attending the funeral of, Bill Reid who was murdered in Geraldton on Christmas Day.

I am hardly an inconspicuous figure out here, and there is a well known saying that you can't hide in the bush in W.A.

It is about a parents right to know what actually killed their child.

The guy didn't work for West Coast and hadnt for a long time.

He had plenty of personal problems and a well known drug habit.

He and his wife were having problems.

His wife is his next of kin and is intitled to receive any information relating to autopsy reports etc, his father is not his next of kin and is not intitled to those things whether he likes it or not.

His father, and the rest of the country, already know what drugs were in his system at the time of his death after the reporting of such on the national news.

What more does he want to know? Take it from my personal experience that when someone close to you dies there are always questions of why, however we rarely get an answer that satisfies our questions, nothing brings them back.

I have not tried to defend Rani Mainwaring in anyway, but can maybe see that there are issues of "ownership" for want of a better word. I can see what is happening having been the evil widow myself once upon a time. Things sometimes get messy when there is so much raw grief involved.

I haven't noticed this public stench you are talking about, but being an ostrich I probably wouldn't would I? I see Hub making waves and dont fully understand why he would be doing so when he already knows how his son died.

A Coroners inquiry would be an inquiry into Chris Mainwarings death, not an inquiry into the West Coast Eagles Football Club, how is that so hard for you to understand?

I dont know what type of grandparent Hub has been in the past. However when he starts putting his own grief, and maybe agenda, in front of the need to shield his grandchildren who have lost their father at a very young age he is on a slippery slope.

They are the exact same age as my children, they go to school and have to deal with playground banter the same as any other children do. Only their dad has died and their grandfather wants the world to know every sordid detail.

Yes, I would question his committment as a grandfather under these circumstances.

There is a rather distinct difference between opinion and outright denial.

However, you are unlikely to change and I admire your stoicism.

MPs urge Mainwaring inquest

Former West Coast chairman of selectors and now Liberal MP Trevor Sprigg says there is a “desperate need” for a public inquest into the death of his friend and football star Chris Mainwaring to find who supplied him with the drugs suspected to have killed him.

Mr Sprigg was supported by State shadow police minister Rob Johnson, who said Mainwaring’s death needed to be fully investigated and the results made public.

Their calls came after The West Australian revealed yesterday that the State Coroner would decide within weeks whether to hold an inquest. Coroner Alastair Hope has the autopsy and toxicology reports on Mainwaring’s body and police confirmed they also gave him a report on their inquiry into the star midfielder’s suspected drug overdose in October.

Mr Sprigg, the shadow sports minister, said he was a close friend of Mainwaring while acting as West Coast chairman of selectors during Mainwaring’s glory days of 1990-92. “The way that Chris died was a tragedy and there absolutely certainly needs to be a public inquest into his death to get to the bottom of what happened that night,” Mr Sprigg said.

“It would be my further wish that the inquest would turn up who’s supplying the drugs. I would love that to happen.

“I’d love the police to be able to nab them and then the courts to throw the book at them. I think that would make his family and everyone happy after such a sad loss.”

Mr Johnson agreed. “If Mr Mainwaring died of a drug overdose we need to know why this happened, how this happened and who enabled him to get drugs and into a state of overdose,” he said. “A public inquiry is the only way these things will be revealed.”

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett would not comment on whether the club wanted an inquest.

“That’s a decision for the Mainwaring family. We would have no position on that whatsoever,” he said.

Acting Police Minister Eric Ripper declined to comment on the need for a coronial investigation, a position also taken by WA Football Commission chief executive Wayne Bradshaw and Drug and Alcohol Office acting executive director Eric Dillon.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou and West Coast coach John Worsfold were not available for comment.

A coronial investigation into Mainwaring’s death would open a Pandora’s box for West Coast because past and present players would almost certainly be forced to answer questions about the former premiership player’s long history of drug use.

Disgraced former Eagle Ben Cousins, who was the last person to see Mainwaring alive after he reportedly took him takeaway food just hours before his death, would be one of the first witnesses called.

Mr Hope can hold an inquiry into any death if he believes there is a public interest or if a family member requests one.

In early October, Mainwaring’s father Hub called for a public inquiry into his son’s death, stating that he wanted the “truth to be revealed”.

Mainwaring, 41, a dual premiership player, died at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital about 12.30am on October 1. Just an hour earlier, he had refused treatment from ambulance officers who were called to his house by neighbours reacting to his loud calls for help.

It is understood he told the ambulance officers he had taken ecstasy and cannabis.

It is understood Mainwaring’s widow Rani has copies of the toxicology and post-mortem reports, which are believed to contain evidence that he had a cocktail of drugs in his system when he died at his Cottesloe home.

It is understood Mrs Mainwaring has not given a copy of the reports to Chris’ father Hub.
