Is an election year, marginal seats in Geelong, Malcolm looking wobbly, game on I would think. Hands out one and all, its the great Aussie sporting tradition.
I really, really hope that was tongue in cheek.

Geelong and Carlton have basically swapped positions in every facet of the game

Back in the 80s the Blues were knocking up winning flags - Princess Park home games - all the rich benefactors would turn up - even Lindsay Fox ( a StKilda man) used to be a regular attender - they use to fill the bags up full of cash - buy some gun recruit from Subiaco or Glenelg - and dominate for a few more years . Even John Elliot was talked about as a future PM - you know he was a such brilliant businessman at Elders IXL - he even took the fruit out of the jam to save costs !!

Now they are hopeless penniless and groundless

Contrast that to the Cats - the flags are rolling in - there rich and plentifull - the home ground is magnificent and getting more magnificent - and money is no object or problem at all - weve now got the rich benefactors - so all is good for the Cats

And for the Blues there is no coming back

The biggest thing I can see is that Cookie is getting ready to call it quits.
The modern CEO types, or at least the good ones, want to leave with things better than when they arrived, but in addition to that having a blueprint going forward that sets up stability and a platform for further successes.

This "Our Ambition" drive, IMO, is exactly that. It sets the next 10 years up so that club can move around and not be restricted to do things.

Its not as much about beating the other clubs pre se, but its about being in a place to be competitive in every facet of the game.
And that requires forethought and planning, good management and as always, a bit of luck.

If Brawshaw (NMFC) and the AFL dont lament him not going to them at some point they are all nuts.

And if Cook and Wells don't get bronze out the front of that place, i'll eat my hat and start a drive to make it so.

This has been speculated upon ad infinitum. If that was his main consideration he could have gone sometime ago.

He extended his contract until the end of 2018 last year. The only reason he would leave before then is if he received an offer he couldn't refuse in my view.

This.

The interest saving is cream on the cake.

The club has obviously done its due diligence on the pokies and decided they're not the way to go. For why I'm not sure.
Ah just did some Google research, seems like they are moving the Pokies and looking for a new venue, not dumping them.

"Commercially, this is a game-changer for us," said Cook, whose club has entered into a new partnership with Tabcorp and is looking for a new venue for its currently dormant gaming machines.

The comments about Tabcorp too are interesting, maybe the Casino talk that was going a while ago had more legs than we think. Geelong sells Pokies to Casino or takes a stake in the Casino or something. Purely guessing but its interesting none the less.

I agree with the basic outline that Cook will quit but I don't think it will be terribly soon. I can see the Geelong way being appointing someone two years out from Cook retiring and him reducing his hours to part time and provide guidance for the new person taking over. It would be a win-win for everyone.

I also don't think he would be quiet ready. I think if they can get the Deakin Facility up and running (not far off), the Pokies venue up and going and Stage 5 complete, I think he will call it quits. The last two I think would be further down the track than we think. I would not be shocked to see Stage 5 funded in the next election campaign and you aren't going to leave the Pokies sitting there for 5 years doing nothing.

I think he is that close to achieving nearly everything that you don't give up now. I'm sure the club would be supportive if he wanted to reduce hours etc but I would think everyone has goals and he would be that close to completing everything and you don't quit at 11.00 o'clock. You aim to quit right on 12.00 o'clock.

If Cook can achieve those things, Geelong's future looks very bright and the club can then focus on the next stage of financial success and that is building investments up so they can be less reliant on up and down football revenue. The success of these things allows for long term consolidation of wealth and that is what Geelong needs. We can't slip back again into debt. We need game changers for the future.

I wasn't suggesting he is planning on leaving anytime soon but I was not clear about that either.

Im seeing this as part of the things he has in play to make his exit at the end of his current deal seamless (I hope he goes on forever but there will be an end)

Great post and spot on mate.

Well unlike Carlton we never won wooden spoons.

Reckon all things being equal he'll move on when KP and the training facilities at Deakin are fully finished. With perhaps another flag to celebrate in the meantime.:)

I admit to having mixed emotions about this. On one hand, $10m is great for the football club, absolutely fantastic. But on the other hand, where I live right now people die from drinking the water, giving birth or not having an ambulance service. It says something unsettling about the nature of humanity that we can raise ten million dollars for an elite footy club, but good luck doing the same to improve the quality of life in the country next door.

So we went from back to back premiers to back to back spooners to premiers again all in a space of about 11 years. Sounds like some tanking and priority picks must of been the order of the day
Back in the day when you could pluck the best ruckman ever to play the game out of the WAFL at age 26...

While I do agree with you. I also think its important to point out the benefits of the Geelong Football Club.

The Geelong Football Club provides a lot of benefits to the community. For example, I believe without the Geelong Football Club, the participation in football and sport in general in the Geelong region would be reduce. Without aiming to do that, the Geelong Football Club to some extent provides both Adults and particularly Children with inspiration to stay healthier. It combats obesity to some extent which is a major issue within our community. It would be a far greater problem without the GFC.

I also think there are many social and economic benefits that flow from the GFC. While, it can't compare to having an ambulance service, it does provide benefit to the Geelong community and does provide a lot of value to the community.
