Beggars belief. The fact the cops were following him so closely too makes it sound like another case of failed policy.

You should never underestimate the ability of big organisations, particularly government departments, to have things slip through the cracks. Especially when the solution is always to add more protocol nested into existing protocol structures meaning a false negative (such as someone's name not appearing on a report by accident) leads to them not being reviewed three steps down the chain and the computer said it was such, therefore it's right.

The illusion of control is valuable.

Would be interesting to know if NZ's new gun laws after Christchurch had a bearing on this and why it was a mass stabbing instead of a shooting

He might have known he was under surveillance, easier for him to take knife off the shelf in the utensils aisle at the supermarket and use that. I hope the people he stabbed pull through.

This is not good, looks like they knew it was only a matter of time with this one. He had criminal history having already served time after going in on a student visa.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern fronted media on Saturday afternoon with further details about the man behind the attack, including the efforts taken by police to keep him in custody or GPS monitored in the community, as concern about the risk he posed grew.
She also said the Government had sought to hurry changes to the terrorism laws in the months after the man was released into the community. The justice minister made a phone call to make this happen the day the attack happened.

Headline says NZ High Court ruled that preparing for a terrorist attack is not an offence and that's why he was not locked up. Could not make this up.
Surely they could find something. Threat to kill? Threat to incite violence? Sedition? Accessing terrorist material online or elsewhere?

What a tragedy. Seemingly the legislation couldn’t keep up with the coward campaigner.

What is worse is that even when found guilty, he played the refugee card to avoid being sent home, was found to be lying about his refugee claims but still couldnt be deported in case it put him in danger. It is long overdue that the UN was given notice to fix the refugee charter to allow for deportation of liars, crims and threats to society or countries or consider it null and void.

He downloaded the video off facebook. Got a suspended sentence with a 12m good behaviour bond.

Bennett Russell Maynard-Brown, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing extremist material in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The court was told Maynard-Brown's housemates had handed in a hard drive containing the "violent" videos to the Holden Hill police station in February, 2021.

In sentencing today, Maynard-Brown's defence lawyer, Emma Shaw, told Magistrate Roderick Jensen her client "did not know it was illegal" to download the video off Facebook, and was now sorry for his "abhorrent" actions.
