My letter does not really concern bad spelling on this or any other website because the standard of education today is quite simply dreadful. Not even teachers can spell, punctuate or do mathematics properly. But that is not my point in writing in.

What bugs me the most is that several radio football commentators will every week make the comment that "he runs into the open goal and bangs it through". When watching the TV replay we realise the player is 35 metres out and there are 20 players between him and the goal umpire!

Another common one is "he runs in and drills it from point-blank range". Once more watching the replay the player is still out 35 metres out.

I think Kevin Bartlett is the worst offender at this level, does anybody else remember any worse exponents of this trade? And is it my magination or is KB really looking old? He was born 6.3.1947 (now almost 54 years old) but looks like 65 plus. Perhaps I need new glasses.

All I can really add is that if one day I am in a situation where a potential assassin has a syringe or a small calibre gun in his hand and he is going to kill me at point-blank range, he at least gets 35 metres back and gives me a real chance.

I agree with you, Perfick Spellar. Some commentators have no idea what they are really saying and simply tick them off a clipboard loaded with cliches as they go.

I agree that KB is ageing very quickly, but that is logical now that he has left Richmond and returned to being a Bulldogs supporter.

My only other bug is that almost every week we seem to have "the game of the year" according to some commentators, especially Rex. There is only one game of the year, and that is the Grand Final, when every other team has departed from the contest and the last two standing are to meet for the ultimate prize. Who cares if in Round 13 the two top teams are playing each other for the right to be on top of the ladder for one more week? The Grand Final is the only "game of the year".

My pet hate is when a player is about to kick TOWARDS the goal and the commentator says "Kingsley Hunter sets sail from the best part of 50 metres!"
I don't understand this.
Is this particular 50 metre measurement taken from 7 metres to the right of the centre to a point on the ground 35 degrees to the left of this original point??
If so...the commentators opinion on the best point of this particular 50 metre line could lie anywhere along its length, so if the commentator is saying this to give the viewer an estimation of how far the kick is travelling towards goal, it is simply not accurate because it would all depend on the original placement of the '50 metres' which the commentator believes has a 'best part', and also on the personal opinion on the commentator with regards to superior points on a 50 metre line.
It just doesn't make sense.

Esperito.

Spelling mistakes can come and go and in our haste to put down our brilliant ideas as quickly as we can, some worser grammatical errors, double kkeying and speeling errers will haeppen.

I hate the pointless banter that commentators use. I once heard a radio commentator say "and Steve Da Rui has taken the mark at half back for Carlton. He's too far out to score!!!" Now, I kind of wish that Steve Da Rui had turned around and banged one through his own goals just to prove the commentator wrong. Before you laugh, I did see a Carlton player do just that, take a mark and turn around and kick a long 'goal' simply because he became disorientated. It was a reserves match during the eighties.

Oh, and I also stuff up with punctuation,!? and not knowing when to start a.

Whist on the subject, my other media pet hate is captions under photo's in the newspaper identifying a player kick or taking a mark etc...only it's not the player in the picture, clearly they have taken a stab in the dark as to who the player is. If the editor isn't sure, just run out into the street and ask a fan, I'm sure they would have a better idea. Not exaggerationg but this happens every other week!!
