What is the premiership side with the least superstars, just a lot of good average players who work hard. I'd have to go Collingwood 1990:

B Kerrison, Christian, Gayfer
HB Morwood, Kelly, Crosisca
C Millane, Shaw, Wright
HF Banks, Manson, Barwick
F Russell, Brown, Daicos
Foll Monkhorst, McGuane, Francis
Int Turner, Starcevich

Oddly Hawthorn in 1991 didn't have a single player in the AA team, the only occasion this has happened in the AFL era. They did however have superstars like Dunstall, Tuck, Langford, Platten etc

I reckon the best way to judge is to look at the premieship teams and count the players that could realisticly be inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in the future. Having done that, I'd certainly agree with you on Collingwood 1990, although Swans 2005 would come close.

HOF (now or in the future)
1990 - Coll - Shaw, Daicos, Brown?
1991 - Haw - Langford, Ayres, Tuck, Mew?, Collins?, Allan?, Brereton, Jarman, Dunstall, Platten
1992 - WCE - McKenna, Worsfold, Jakovich, Matera, Kemp, McIntosh, Sumich, maybe others
1993 - Ess - Wanganeen, Fletcher, Thompson, Hird, Watson, Salmon, Long,
1994 - WCE - same as above
1995 - Car - Silvagni, McKay, Ratten, Kouta, Williams, Kernahan, Bradley, Madden?, Campo?
1996 - NM - Martyn, Archer, Simpson, Carey, McKernan, Bell
1997/98 - Ade - Hart, McLeod, Goodwin, Jarman, Smart, Rehn, Bickley, Edwards, Ricciuto, Modra (inj)
1999 - NM - same as above + Grant? Harvey
2000 - Ess - Fletcher, Hird, Lucas?, Lloyd, Long,
2001/2/3 - BL - Johnson, Leppitsch, White?, Aker, Lappin, Black, Power, Brown, Bradshaw, Lynch, Voss, Michael?
2004 - Port - C/K COrnes, Tredrea, one of the burgoynes?,
2005 onward - probs too hard to tell yet

1996 - NM - Martyn, Archer, Simpson, Carey, McKernan, Bell

1999 - NM - same as above + Grant? Harvey

Theres alot of B&F's and Coleman Medals with Anthony Stevens and John Longmire.

I'd say us in 2005. Goodes was our only true superstar. If you go by using Hall of Fame as a measure then I'd say O'Loughlin is our only other superstar. Barry Hall, Brett Kirk and Tadgh Kennelly were others who I rate very highly from that team. I'd say it was more our gamestyle that would make us an average premiership team.

^^ honest bloke

i think sydney's tempo football was what won them the premiership. just playing a smarter brand and adhering strongly to team rules even when being criticised by EVERYONE for playing such ugly football.

bit like chelsea parking the bus against barca... JOKES JOKES JOKES. I promise i won't turn this thread like i do the others :p

Hall had superstar status in 2005 I reckon. 2004-2006 he was in the 'elite' forwards bracket. In hindsight the mid 00s were all about Cousins, Judd, Goodes, Hall.

Probably, I was using that Hall of Fame criteria to be considered a superstar. I think Hall will be borderline for HOF. No doubting that 05 was about Hall and Cousins and 06 was about Judd and Goodes. The two dominant players from the respective teams during our premiership years.

Millane was sensational in 1990.

I would say that Essendon 1993 would be pretty close.

B: Gavin Wanganeen Dustin Fletcher Dean Wallis
HB: David Grenvold Mark Harvey Mark Thompson (c)
C: Rick Olarenshaw Sean Denham Paul Hills
HF: Mark Mercuri James Hird Joe Misiti
F: Tim Watson Paul Salmon Michael Long
Foll: Peter Somerville Gary O'Donnell Darren Bewick
Int: Chris Daniher David Calthorpe

Some absolute legends in there however many had not reached their peak in 1993 or were winding down their careers. Plus they weren't that dominant during the home & away series with 3 wins separating 1st (Essendon) to 12th. Lost their first final, however won the other two pretty comfortably.

Looking back it was a legendary team, however in 1993 Sheedy was right, they did sort of steal the premiership.

IMO Collingwood 1990 was easily the worst Side to win a Premiership during my time of watching football (since approximately 1978.)

The only other Side that may remotely come close is Port Adelaide 2004.

i agree with the 90 and 93 premiership teams. how could it possibly be the port 04 side? this is a team that had previously finished on the ladder 1st after the home and away season. they then embarassed a team that had won three flags in a row.

port 04 ! neva saw 90' flag...

I'll give you Mahoney, Thurstans and Schofield as the 3 lesser players in that team. Mind you Thurstans as good as won the game, and Mahoney was a revelation.

The rest were hardly 'average'

S and P burgoyne
C and K Cornes
Pickett, Tredrea, Dew, Kingsley
Cassissi James, Montgomery
Wilson, Wakelin, Bishop, Wanganeen
Brogan, Carr, Hardwick and Lade

Demetriou was your true superstar.

I remember reading somewhere that the Adelaide Crows had the most ever number of delistings/trades from a premiership team in AFL history. Not saying they are the worst but I find that interesting. It was just that there good players were fantastic.

The Pies 90 looks average on paper but it would be hard to find a bunch of blokes that functioned better as a "TEAM".

Darren Millane's death tore the heart out of those blokes. It is also pretty easy to forget just how good Daicos, McGuane, Millane and Graeme Wright amongst others, were that year.

With three consecutive minor premierships? It's not like Port Adelaide just snuck in under the radar in 2004; winning only one flag was an underachievement.

essendon 2000 extremely short on 'memorables' given their statistical achievements

The 2000 Essendon season is the closest thing to a no-contest there has ever been, from the first week to the last. They were stunning.

While I am a bit uneasy about the term 'average', the Swans of 2005 were a bunch of toilers...pretty good ones at that!
