Most Boring VFL/AFL Player Encounters/Sightings.

During his playing days at the Swans he (Sanford Wheeler) once jogged past me as I was standing waiting to cross
at the lights at the corner of Broadway & City Rd in Chippendale. I was impressed that he was out running, it was a
very hot day in summer. He was the first African-American born player to play in the AFL. Sadly he died in March
this year aged 49 from some kind of heart disease I believe.

He actually wasn't a bad player, but his career coincided with the period where the swans were terrible.

Yes, you could say that. I looked him up. 43 games for 5 wins, a draw and 37 losses. He played in 14 games during
our 26 game losing streak over the 92 & 93 seasons. Interestingly, all five of the wins he was involved in were at
the SCG. He played 24 away games and the Swans didn't won one of them. I do remember he was a popular player
amongst Swans fans at the time though, but he could be a bit frustrating sometimes. He had the dreadlock thing
going, a man ahead of his times in some ways. Averaged 11.4 disposals which is not great, but far from our worst.

I saw Reece Conca at Emporium in the city at the end of 2018. He was with a woman who I think was his girlfriend, but it could have been his sister or a friend. I was going down the escalator and he was going up. By the time I realised who it was, he had already passed me. I thought about calling out and saying something like, "Hey Conca, good luck at Freo!" but I thought about it for too long and then he was too far away.

I was walking down Swan St one Fri night, about 1am, with a mate. It was around 2010. 2 blokes walked past us. One was Spider Everitt. As they got close I noticed his height first, and then looked at his face and realised it was him. As I looked at him, he locked eyes with me with a piercing, almost unfriendly stare. It was a bit intimidating and I looked away. Then I got a souvlaki.
Same fate befell me at the Stylus nightclub mid 90's next to the wrestling ring. I avoided going anywhere near him for the rest of the evening.

I was at the tail end of a night out on the town with mates and we landed at crown casino where we saw Robert DiPierdomenico chatting with a handful of people. One of my friends was more drunk than I, so bravely walked up to Dipper like they were high school buddies meeting again at their 10th year reunion.

Dipper handled it like a pro, shook my friends hand, then went back to chatting with his group.

calling a player by their second name when u see them in public. Nuffie mode activated

2018 - Saw Joe Daniher & Ben Stratton at the Grace Darling Hotel going to the bathroom together quite a bit throughout the night. Didn't bother approaching, but Joe's demeanour hugely resembles Goofy.

Also served Mal Michael at my old job that same year, unfortunately he's one of those pricks that are incredibly rude to retail staff.

Played basketball against Aaron Sandilands. He's very good at rebounding and blocking shots, that's about it though.

He forged a 271 game AFL career from being very good at knocking ruck taps to his feet and that's about it. Sounds like he's got a fruitful NBL career ahead to me!

Slightly off topic - did you know that Scott Pendlebury played basketball?

Now that is boring

I doubt it, a commentator would have mentioned it at some stage surely...

I recently saw Shane Mumford hanging out with mates at a children's playground on the Gold Coast, supervising his or his mates children.

I was annoyed as my kids were being sooky and bratty, and it was hot. I was wearing a Carlton hat which I assume would have made him pity me if he saw me. I stayed out of his vicinity.

He's smaller than he looks on tv.

Not AFL, but I walked past Merv Hughes, who was eating at one of those outdoor cafes with his kids in Werribee.

Around about 2002 I was catching the train to the Big Day Out in Melbourne. Just as we got to the Showgrounds I realised Gary Ablett Snr was on the train. He was with another bloke who was even more age-inappropriate for the event than Gary was, looking about 45 and sketchy as *. Gary did not look off his chops; he was just sitting very quietly. He was wearing a pork pie hat, and it didn’t really suit him.

Max Lynch playing AFL 9's back home in the off-season. Even against underage girls and middle aged men he didn't look that dominant. Just tall.

Bumped into Scott Camporeale on Brunswick Street at 3am just after he’d switched to Essendon.

I said something like ‘you’re Scott Camporeale.’

He said ‘no I’m not’.

It was him.

Prior to playing Adelaide in round 1, 2015, I saw Leigh Tudor sitting by himself watching the Saturday night game in the Austral.

I went up to him and said "thanks for 1994, mate". We then shared several beers and he told me that Ben Brown would be a late out the next day, that Scott Thompson would play on Eddie Betts and that Phil Walsh (RIP) couldn't coach. I then left and did karaoke at La Sing and the Crows belted us the next day. Then I went to a Counting Crows concert.

Saw Tony Armstrong cross the road this afternoon in Brunswick.
