There was an article this week about Jesse Hogan having played under 8 AFL coaches during his career. Would that be a record or have other players played under more? Thinking of someone like Dale Kickett who played at 5 clubs, may have played under a fair few.

Probably someone like Dan Currie would get a nomination as I think he played for something like 4 clubs so there is a good chance he played under more coaches than that.

Tom Hickey has also played for 4 clubs and if there were coaching changes while he was at any of those clubs it would drive the number higher.

Kickett by my count would have played under
  • Rod Austin
  • Mick Malthouse
  • Ken Sheldon
  • Kevin Sheedy
  • Gerard Neesham
  • Damian Drum
  • Ben Allan
  • Chris Connolly

And that doesn't include any State of Origin coahes he had playing for WA.

That's a lot of dud coaches he played under and 2 amazing ones.

Dale Weightman played under

Barry Richardson
Tony Jewell X2
Francis Bourke
Mike Patterson
Paul Sproule
Kevin Bartlett
Allan Jeans
John Northey
I had a feeling Richmond might take this one. They used to go through coaches like changing clothes

Richard Osborne, whose career spanned from 1982-1998 played under 11 different coaches for 4 clubs during this time as follows:

FITZROY (1982-1992)
Robert Walls (1982-1985)
David Parkin (1986-1988)
Rod Austin (1989-1990)
Robert Shaw (1991-1992)

SYDNEY SWANS (1993)
Gary Buckenara
Brett Scott
Ron Barassi

WESTERN BULLDOGS (1994-1996)
Terry Wheeler (1994)
Alan Joyce (1994-1996)
Terry Wallace (1996)

COLLINGWOOD (1997-1998)
Tony Shaw

Nathan Jones, if you count interims:

Neale Daniher
Mark Riley
Dean Bailey
Todd Viney
Mark Neeld
Neal Craig
Paul Roos
Simon Goodwin

He got through the first seven in eight years.

The opposite in the NRL was a player who played at 3 clubs and only ever had 1 coach.

When Wayne Bennett changed club this guy would follow. Cant remember the name though.
That was Darius Boyd. Played 2006-18 under him for 4 club stints. Boyd stayed on at the Broncos for 2019-20 into retirement, but Bennett was sacked and went straight to the Rabbitohs. Boyd was a good player though, bit different to someone more coach-associated like a Zac Dawson.

Sydney went through 3 coaches in 1 year?

Sydney went through 3 coaches in 1 year?

Yes, that's correct. The 1992 coach Gary Buckenara was the coach for the first month, but after thrashings from Hawthorn, St Kilda and Essendon that took Sydney's losing sequence to 18 he was sacked. Brett Scott took over as interim coach for about 3 weeks while Ron Barassi got things in order to move from Melbourne to Sydney to take the helm of the struggling Swans, and he commenced in a game against Carlton.

At the one club Marc Murphy played under:

Denis Pagan
Brett Ratten
Mick Malthouse
Jon Barker
Brendan Bolton
David Teague

If he held on for one more year he would've had Vossy which would've been his 7th coach!!:eek:

Bruce Doull started his career at Carlton in 1969 and finished in 1986. By my count that means he played under: Ron Barassi, John Nicolls, Keith McKenzie, Ian Thorogood, Ian Stewart, Sergio Silvagni, Alex Jesaulenko, Percy Jones, David Parkin and Robert Walls

10 coaches at one club. What is amazing is that was arguably Carlton's most successful era with 5 premierships (and a grand final in his last year).

Geoff Raines had a decent array of coaches. 9 separate coaches at the 4 clubs for which he played.

Richmond: Hafey Richardson Jewell Bourke

Filth: Cahill Rose

Koala Genocide FC: Kevin Sheedy

Brisbane Bears: Knights Feltham

He can’t match Osborne, but he has given it a shake.

Special mention to another former Tiger Jeff Hogg, 8 coaches in an 11 season career.

Tigers 86-93. Jewell Bartlett Jeans Northey

Fitzroy 94-96 Shaw Quinlan McConnell Nunan

Ray Byrne of Carlton-Collingwood-Geelong fame played under 10 coaches but there was a few interims in there.

Bret Scott was the Swans caretaker coach for 2 games after Buckenara was sacked. (Rounds 5,6)
Richard Osborne was injured and didn't play in either of these games.

So that means he played under 10 coaches

However, there's another ex-Royboy: Ossie's teammate at Sydney who did play under 11 coaches...

Rocket Rod Carter
The Fitzroy & Swans defender who played 293 games and kicked 1 goal.

Coached by...

  1. Graham Donaldson... (Fitzroy 1974)
  2. Graham Campbell..... (Fitzroy 1974) caretaker coach for 3 games
  3. Kevin Rose............... (Fitzroy 1975–77)
  4. Graham Campbell..... (Fitzroy 1978)
  5. Bill Stephen............. (Fitzroy 1979)
  6. Ian Stewart............. (South Melb 1980–81)
  7. Ricky Quade............ (Sydney 1982–84)
  8. Bob Hammond......... (Sydney 1984) caretaker coach for 8 games
  9. John Northey........... (Sydney 1985)
  10. Tom Hafey............... (Sydney 1986–88)
  11. Col Kinnear.............. (Sydney 1989–91)

In 1984, the Swans were coached for 1 game by Tony Franklin (round 14 vs Collingwood)
"Tilt" would've played under 12 coaches if he hadn't missed this 1 game because of an injury

Why wouldn't interim coaches count?

Should caretaker coaches who take the reins when the old coach got sacked be counted but assistants who get a game when the head coach catches COVID not count?

Few North players might get a run here if this form continues. Likes of Thomas, Taylor and Scott are 4th year players under their 3rd coach, could be 4 soon.

Polec is up to 6 including Mark Harvey for 3 games.

Brad Boyd (1992-1999) played 85 games under:

Robert Shaw
Bernie Quinlan
Alan McConnell
Mick Nunan
Alan McConnell 2.0
John Northey
Roger Merrett
Leigh Matthews

That's an average of less than 3 wins per coach. And all whilst a 'Lion'.
